The theme of the article is that bingo halls have closed but more important than that is the fact that many, many bingo playing Scots have had their lives damaged by the smoking ban.
Dodgy designer Scotland is no place for the newly designated 'imperfect' Scot.

How sad that these places are closing due to losing their customers the majority of whom must have been smokers. Charity is also losing out as collections also used to be carried out in Bingo Halls. Smokers contribute an extra 9 billion to the treasurey, are estimated to cost the NHS 1.5 billion, this is a profit of 7.5 billion. Passive smoking has never been proven to harm anyone, enough reports have said this including WHO and EPA so why should someone have to give up something that they enjoy to become part of society. Oppression of people never works .

Whilst sad that these businesses will close and jobs will be lost because people are incapable of passing two hours without smoking, shows how much of a problem there is with addiction. Transition and change are always difficult, but necessary if the country is to progress and grow. Also I think I think it is fair to say that through not smoking passively, lives will be saved, money in NHS treatment will be saved, and this far outweighs the loss to the economy. Maybe the halls will reopen when people get used to being able to have a good time and enjoy their hobbies without smoking.

Whilst this is not not good news for the Bingo Halls it is good news for those of us fighting the ban in the rest of the UK. We are frequently told that a ban is not harming livelyhoods etc. Only two days ago ASH and Cancer Research UK claimed that all was fine in Scotland. This demonstrates that it clearly isn't. Freedom to Choose is considering a legal challenge to the UK ban. We are seeking financial support. What is very sad about these closures is the fact that many peoples social lives will be destroyed, the quality of live for many elderly people who go as much for the company as for the game, will be isolated and alone. Jack McConnell is a heartless politician who should be voted out of office along with all those who imposed this ban on the Scottish People against their wishes (76% voting for choice.) Support Freedom to Choose together we can make a difference over 15'000 people UK wide are already supporting our fight for choice, with 70 Peers at least in our corner.

Has anyone heard about a planned constituency trip by Gordon Brown?
Surely he is going to face all his ex-bingo playing voters and explain how they are martyrs to an unneccessary law and hope that they don't mind being an excluded group.
Hospitality venues with Smoke-free and Smoke-friendly signs could accommodate ALL the electorate and employers could request non-smoking or smoking applicants for jobs.
Why waste money building yet another bureaucratic empire, spend the money on tax breaks for those businesses who wish to go smoke-free.
