THE hand of history belonged to George Bush yesterday when he welcomed Barack Obama, the first black president-elect of the United States, into the White House.
Arriving 11 minutes early Mr Obama and his wife Michelle stepped out of a long, black limousine to be greeted by President Bush and the First Lady standing outside the diplomatic entrance at the White House.

The president-elect's arrival had the look of a visit from a head-of-state but there were no fife and drum bands, speeches or official pageantry.

The president and his wife escorted the Obamas into the historic mansion that will become their next home in a little more than two months.

Television pictures showed Mr Bush and Mr Obama talking as they walked alone under the White House Colonnade, pausing for pictures before entering the Oval Office.

It was Mr Obama's first time in the presidential chamber.

President Bush allowed Mr Obama to enter the historic office first as the 43rd and 44th US presidents prepared for a private talk about the challenges of leading a nation freighted in this hand-over of power by a severe economic downturn and two wars. The country's troubles fall to Mr Obama when he takes office on 20 January next year.

Mr Bush, who had endorsed Republican John McCain, lauded Mr Obama's victory as a "triumph of the American story," as he issued a warm invitation for the next president and his wife, Michelle, to their future home.

Josh Bolten, Mr Bush's chief of staff, predicted before the meeting that "some of the most important issues of the day" were likely to come up.

During the visit Mrs Bush gave Mrs Obama a tour of the first family's living quarters, including the bedrooms used by children of past presidents.

Dana Perino, White House press secretary, said: "I don't think any of us can understand what it's like ... for two people who are going to be in a very small club, who understand what it's like to be the commander-in-chief, to be the leader of our great country."

After arriving, the Obamas were taken to the Diplomatic Reception Room where they were to meet the chief usher of the White House, Ms Perino said.

After the meeting which lasted just under two hours, President Bush walked Mr Obama to a waiting black limousine as he left the executive mansion.

In 1901, Booker T Washington caused outrage when he became the first black man invited to the White House. Now, 107 years later, Mr Obama was feted as he stepped for the first time into the famous room from where he will govern the nation as its 44th president.

The Obama's two daughters, Malia, ten, and Sasha, seven, who will be the White House's youngest residents for more than 30 years, were at school in Chicago. Unlike the incoming president, Mr Bush knew his way around the Oval Office by the time he was elected in 2000 as his father had been president.

Mr Obama has been to the White House before, including an emergency leadership session to deal with the financial crisis in September. But an Obama spokeswoman said the president-elect had never been in the Oval Office.

Mr Obama won the presidency last week after running a campaign in which he relentlessly linked rival John McCain to the unpopular President Bush and what he lambasted as his failed policies. The tone changed after Mr Obama's win.

The president lauded the Democrats' victory, and Mr Obama, in turn, thanked him for being gracious.

Presidential address waits to welcome two excited sisters

THE next US First Lady yesterday met the current First Lady in private to discuss, among other topics, how the White House will become a home for the Obamas' two young daughters.

Not since 1977, when Amy Carter, nine, moved in, will there have been such young children at the White House.

The parents of Malia, ten, and Sasha, seven, have already pledged to give them as normal a life as possible.

Previously, Michelle Obama has said: "My first job is going to be mom-in-chief. Making sure in this transition, which will be even more of a transition for the girls, that they know they continue to be the centre of our universe."

Aides say Mrs Obama does not want to help shape policy.

She also had a chance to say thank you after Laura Bush came to her rescue early in the presidential campaign, when she was criticised for saying that only since her husband ran for president was she "proud of America".

In an interview with ABC, Mrs Bush said: "I think she probably meant: 'I'm more proud', you know." She said comments in a campaign could be misconstrued.

America, take a bow; you should be proud of yourself. The world congratulates you.
If #1 thinks that this pivotal time in history is boring, well, how can you possibly explain the momentous to someone who obviously refuses to see?

Yes number 2, the concern is for the American people who need something like this to get them out of their doldrums. Whether the president is black yellow or white.Good luck to the bloke, he will need it...

Nice story!

Wish our politicians were more like them. I am so fed up with the name calling, spin and nastiness. Pity they can't just get on with the job of building the country up again instead of always working against one another, invariably to our detriment.

Why is Obama called black, he called himself a mutt. He could easily be also called white for the same reason. Perhaps better called a Halfrican American, makes more sense.

Is it possible that a growing number of people are realising that this presidential election is nothing but a charade, acted out to dupe people into thinking that there will be change in America?

Will time tell if this cynicism is correct?

#9 "Why is Obama called black?"

The answer to that is, if we go back just over 130 years ago, (In America) Obama would have been bought and sold just like any other slave in America, regardless of his half white background. Thats how sad and ugly the history is.

# 14 speaks the truth

I see the Kennedy toadies are everywhere- even at the Hootsman. That post contained nothing but facts that many people would like everyone to ignore. It did not contain any unsuitable language or unverified opinion.
I would have stuck to Joe Kennedy's bootlegging past, though.

Amazing to see censorship in action. Joseph Stalin would be proud.

Brideun, it's been traditional here that any mixed blood black is considered black. It dates from the days of slavery when the women were forced into sex by the slave owners, to spare their delicate wives the rigors of passion. Light skinned blacks, octoroons, half-breeds had to be defined due to southern laws about intermarriage. In the tradition of the ruling class, black males were hung or killed for sexing white women while the master of the plantation had his way. After 300 years of slavery and running away to the Indian Nations, etc, there are few, if any blacks who are not carrying other race genes. Most of us are satisfied to be classified African Americans. For some of us who remember white only schools, drinking fountains, restrooms, etc, it's an unbelievable dream to finally be able to tell our kids, "you can be anything you want" because American apartheid is finally dead. I just wish he'd been elected in a more properous time for the country. The fate of the whole world has been compromised by a succession of politicians. I only hope he can steer us, you and all the other markets back to stability. It's a near impossible mission and would have been so for Clinton or McCain. Europe, Asia, the Far East, the Near East, all need stability and recovery.

Do all of the "believers" that trace their roots to the first people, Adam and Eve, and the Garden of Eden then claim Iraqi ancestry ?

The historic "garden" is said to have existed in the "fertile crescent," formed between the Tigris and Euphrates rivers, located in present-day Iraq.

Did we bomb the Garden of Eden ?

Are we all Iraqi mutts ?

It's not really very good for us to have a black American Democrat president like Obama that turns away from Israel. Israel relies heavily on US assistance and weaponry, therefore if Obama becomes preoccupied with say African nations like the Congo or Europe then terrorists can take advantage in the middle east and create more havoc.

This election decision proves three things

1. Obama WAS and IS the best man for the job
2. America does not suffer from a racist undertone to the degree that we are told
3. Black Americans have been lazy and self defeating for ages - Obama proves you can do whatever you want when you put your mind to it - colour is of no significance - so its time the African American community pulled themselves toward themselves and made some changes

Obama is called "black" because he chose many years ago to identify himself as an African American. He has gone to great pains to ignore his white side.

#17,

I'm sure Gordon Brown will be first in line to kiss posteriors when Obama actually becomes the president on January 20th. Right now, Bush is still the president.

There is always a choice. He made his and it got him to the White House.

I'm sure you will be amazed, as your comments about "honky" are pretty racist, but for some people including me his skin color is of no importance at all. His lack of accomplishments IS important. The presidency isn't a training position and when I look at Obama I see someone not ready to occupy the Oval Office. But keep on being entranced by the color of his skin.

So. . .according to you,

"There is always a choice. He made his and it got him to the White House."

He CHOSE to be seen as a BLACK MAN, eh ?

Let's try an experiment and see him now as a WHITE MAN ! How's that image working for you ?

So. . . . it's Obama's CHOICE to be seen as an African-American ?

What was his other choice, being seen as
Michael Jackson. . . ( bleaching himself) or go out in "whiteface?"

Really, Sandi - you need to be thinking a bit more about things.

***********************************

I've always been amused by the term "honky," and I do not take offense when hearing it mentioned regarding my lily-white, Irish-American skin color. I remember the term from many years ago on "Sandford and Son"
and it always made me laugh.

However, if by chance I have some African blood in my family, do I have the option of calling myself a "brother ?"

What say, sista ?

If the Republicans ever have a desire to nominate another woman for high office, I would suggest that it NOT be anything akin to "Hanna Montana Palin"

http://tv.disney.go.com/disneychannel/hannahmontana/

"I'm like. . . OK, God, if there is an open door for me somewhere, this is what I always pray, I'm like. . don't let me miss the open door." (Sarah Palin)

Good God ! Is this woman 13 ?

We should ALL show her the DOOR. . . .
and work towards nominating a viable female candidate next time. There are MANY men who would consider voting for the first woman president. . . I expected to be doing so this time around !

After our experience with the moron Bush, why intentionally pick someone likely to be president who is several grades below the "village idiot?"

Maybe you are confusing it with the just over "30" years ago he could have been bought and sold in the Middle East!!!!

Would it not be more accurate to say that after "200" years of slavery a lot of American black slaves had some mixed blood-----not "300" years.

For someone who claims to be a very smart Democrat.. you ought to look into why you and these other idiots feel the way they do about her.
From Day 1 the media and the press was out to get her. To literally destroy her with lies and innuendos.
When she explained how wrong they were, and other explanations given for stupid remarks about her daughter being the mother of her child etc, the press would not and did not print them in a timely fashion.
I don't care what you think of the woman.. but for G-d's sake stop it already.
The media has been in the tank for the Obamas because he was new, he had a buzzword, "Change", and a mantra, "Yes we can". Only time will tell how this will work.. Most of us are willing to wait see.

She is a viable candidate.. the left was scared to death of her, that is why they tried to destroy her.
There wasn't a paper or a tv outlet that didn't send a crew to Alaska to dig up dirt, and found none.
But, preferring to believe the lies and garbage, that was written about her including blaming McCain's loss on her, nothing will change your minds.
McCains loss was because he didn't get angry enough with this bailout, with Fannie Mae, and Freddie Mac, and he didn't say he was going after the people responsible for it.
To ridicule her on national broadcasts didn't help either.. To insult her to her face in front of national audiences and NEVER say anything about Joe Biden the Gaffer, (who had to be hidden away for a time)..proves how in the tank they were for Obama.
The election is over... leave the woman alone. She didn't get to where she is by being stupid, in spite of what you and the press say. I have seen the spokesman for the Oil companies in Alaska who say she is a tough cookie, and is very bright, and knows what she is doing, and they have a high regard for her.
Enough..you and some of the other men here are a bunch of mysoginists. It must give you some thrill to keep demeaning her like that.

What do you Scots know about running a country, or voting for your country's leader? You are TOLD who your leader will be, and you have been babied by the English for centuries. Taken in hand like the little children playing at adults that you are. Who runs your economy? and military? The last dribbles of your quickly vanishing petroleum resources are still pouring South. You are little more than Colonials and cannon fodder for the English.

#36,

You really are a sad little person. Is skin color all you can see? Well, it must be, because it's the only thing Obama has going for him. Obama chose to totally embrace the black culture of the USA, which he was not born into and was not brought up as part of. He did not have to do that, whatever color his skin is. It was his choice, and yes, it got him where he is now.

She drew huge crowds, 10,000 people, or was it 30,000- and she did it without giving away free beer, hot dogs and a free rock concert.
Unless he had a free concert first, Obama never drew huge crowds until he defeated Hillary..

Palin needs to lose the God comments to the national and international media, religion should be personal. and then maybe the secular thinkers wouldn't be terrified of her.

In two years the country will be ready for a female Reagan more than it was ready for a black Jimmy Carter last week.

Honestly speaking, Obama would only be classified as Black, a single drop of Negro blood, makes you Black, regardless of complexion. Look up the words, mulatto,
quadroon, octoroon and more rarely, quintroon, were historically racial categories of hypodescent used in Latin America and parts of the 19th century Southern United States, particularly Louisiana. The terms were also used in Australia to refer to people of mixed Aboriginal and European ancestry. One drop is the rule.
Oddly enough, some poor deluded Christians in the USA are thanking God for this, "Miracle" of finally admitting we are equals. The truth is intelligent Americans won't stand for 4 more years of Republican inaction and indecision. Only redneck, ignorant folks are claiming he's undercover Al Qaida, the anti-christ and going to destroy the nation and strangely enough the red/blue map shows a "Bible Belt" that stretches from Texas to the Canadian Border, an area that encompasses the most undereducated populace of the U.S.
These are the same folks who think the Iraqi War is the culmination of the Crusades and will finally save the planet from the Moslem hordes. Actually, I say "come home and leave them be, they'll solve the problem for us, with their own brand of justice and religious bickering".
