THE United States has made a deal allowing it to continue using a Central Asian air base that is crucial to the Nato mission in Afghanistan – after agreeing to triple the rent it pays.
The former Soviet republic of Kyrgyzstan in February had ordered the US forces out, a decision some observers said may have been made under pressure from Russia, which is strongly opposed to a US military presence so close to its borders. Russia, whi
ch also has a base in Kyrgyzstan, increased its aid to Kyrgyzstan just before the eviction announcement.

Under the new deal, the US will pay $60 million in annual rent, up from the current $17.4 million for use of the Manas air base, which is an important operations hub as the US-led coalition ramps up its campaign against the Taleban and al-Qaeda in Afghanistan.

US forces have had access to Manas, outside Bishkek, since 2001. The base became even more important to the Afghan war effort after neighbouring Uzbekistan evicted US troops from a base there.

Militants have stepped up attacks on the main route for military supplies to Afghanistan through Pakistan – although the military maintains this has little impact on its operations.

Analysts say Russia, which grudgingly accepted the agreement, may have approved it in the hope of US concessions on issues that have badly strained its relations with Washington – such as Nato's possible expansion eastward and a planned US missile defence complex in central Europe.

"Reaching this agreement is, of course, Kyrgyzstan's sovereign right," said the Russian Foreign Ministry after yesterday's deal was announced.

Happy fighting boys!

If they were mine I'd just shut the bedroom door on them.

The fighting spirit of our armed forces has never been in question , but the political class , can this newest group just in power pull out of Iraq in an orderly fashion and still win where the Soviet Red Army could not? Rudyard Kipling , I think wrote something about the Kyber pass being a place where all great world empires go to die. I think it was RK that wrote that just about when the Empire on which the sun never set started a long decline. I think that the Russian men of power would just enjoy seeing US slowly fail on both fronts , not over night , just thru attrition as the public grows tired of the politicians re-inventing the wheel yet again. I just feel badly for the injured and the dead on our side and the Afghans in the cities whom desire a better future and get abandoned by yet another great power. The forces of modernity thrashing away at the erradicators , who knows what the end results will be. The sudden retreat from this area will just impower the Taleban and similar groups , just expect more and more poppies blooming in the sun :D.

Chequebook imperialism at its best. A strategic salient in Central Asia between China and Russia, handy for oilfields, espionage, and keeping the lid on Pakistan.

Fits in neatly with the fortresses in Taiwan, South Korea and Afghanistan.

A long way from the Atlantic, so nothing to do with Nato.

The plan is always the same...its to keep the 'dark nations' under control.
If the darkness floods the world... we are all lost.
The two enemies in the region are militant Islam and the other is the communists in China.
One day the USA will leave the region and China will flood into that whole area.
It maybe a long way off but China has the patience to wait.
She plans right now for the take-over of the region by gathering a number of nations together under the name of the Shanghai Co-operation Organisation.
Red aint dead. It will come alive again in Russia I believe.
It actually grows even here in OZ with corrupt socialist/Red politicians and the dance of the Rudd government with China.
One day 'the Red' is going move down into the South Pacific to plunder Australia/NZ.
Some prophecies of this can be located at http://whatwillbecomeofaustraliajackburrell.blogspot.com/

The access to trade routes , control of petrol resources , domination of this , that and the other thing. This might be a new century , but the same desire to control at all costs as much of the raw materials and large masses of people around the good stuff has always been the same. The more things change the more they stay the same. The home front economy is looking mighty thin , so go grab some more goodies and attempt to make the other fellows goals , the exact same thing in a different wrapping , look like a big menace , sometimes it is sometimes not , so the tax paying public will not get too antsy. The law of un-intended consequences will mix things up even more , and what do you do? The choices look black & white at times , but what agenda is going on behind closed doors , I have not got a clue? D.

All that money given away to a foreign country. Money that we can use here in America on our health system.

Lets have the truth, Australia.

Good Australians welcome the British and the Americans.
Most of the Australians are from England.
This is originally an English colony.
Founded with the Holy Bible.

If you dont like it... go back to China!
I wonder how many Chinese spies, like yourself, are Down Under.
One day the intelligence people will locate you and send you home.
If it wasnt for the Chinese spies in Australia most of the sedition wouldnt be stirred up.
Im sure Islam would be quieter.

China wants us as NEW SOUTH CHINA ...but we are beginning to make the people aware of this and the resistance has begun.

All over the world the Chinese government is trying to break down democracies and 'established-by-the-voters' governments for her great global conquest plan.
Lets the nations beware...China is no friend to anyone escpecially the English and their descendants.
The old red dragon simply couldnt get over the Opium Wars...thus the great military buildup of the past few decades.
Its all 'payback-in-the-planning'.

Sixty million dollars a year in rent is a lot of lute. One can only imagine all the other countries accommodating US military bases will also be looking forward to tripling their rent as well.

Why is all this money being wasted?
