POLICE in Rome are investigating after a Japanese couple were given a 695 (£595) bill after lunch at a restaurant. It included a 115.50 tip they said they did not agree to.
Authorities shut the restaurant after the couple filed a complaint, a police official said.

Restaurant owner Franco Fioravanti told Italian newspapers that the couple looked satisfied as they left the Passetto restaurant, and that they had ordered a lavish meal that included oysters, lobsters and sea bass.

But police checking menu prices against the couple's receipt found discrepancies.

The "115.50 tip" alone would have sent me into paroxysms. I tip with discretion anywhere and everywhere, not when ratbags like this one assume I should. This is a cowardly rip-off of foreign tourists.

Shut the restaurant and place the owner in prison.

A few years ago the Japanese would have paid up no questions asked, but in today's climate, I don't think so.

Maybe they thought it was the new head of the IAEC.

When in Rome do as the Romans would do. Walk out without paying.

As long as the lunch was delicious.
