A gunman entered a church during Sunday services and opened fire, sending seven people to the hospital, officials said.
No one was reported killed, but a church member who arrived moments after the shooting said some victims had head injuries.

Police said the gunman was in custody, according to Knoxville television stations WBIR-TV and WATE-TV.

The gunman enter
ed the Tennessee Valley Unitarian Universalist Church and fired three times with a shotgun, said church member Steve Drevick.

He was called to the church immediately after the shooting to help out and later gave a statement to reporters.

Several people had head wounds, he said. Drevick had spoken to several eyewitnesses and said no one at the church recognized the gunman, who was tackled after he fired the shots, Drevick said. The gunman had more ammunition on him, Drevick said.

There were about 200 people in the church at the time of the shooting watching a youth performance being put on by 25 children.

Police had cordoned off the church with yellow and red tape, and were taking statements and collecting video cameras from church members who had been taping the performance.

The seven patients were "in various stages of treatment," said Becky Thompson, spokeswoman for the University of Tennessee Medical Center.

A woman from a nearby Presbyterian church brought flowers to the scene.

#1 Hiya HC! Yes, I think the gunman is the subject of para 4 & then para 5 says 'he' & ye'd think it was him. But I could be wrong - I get ticked off for grammar now & then.

They simply have to stop these Hot, Southern, Firebrand preachers getting the audiance too excited with all those hellfire homilies that they are famed for.

Perhaps the congregation should encourage the Preacher of this church to consider converting and taking his inflamatory homilies to a Mosque.

That could solve a few universal problems!

Caratacu: you are wrong on that one. The Supreme Court recently decided on this, not more than 2 months ago, that it IS an INDIVIDUAL right to bear arms for USA citizens, for self-protection against criminals. I'm sure that information was not made readily for you, as it was not well received by the anti-gun crowd here.

It is a fact, the area with the most stringent gun control here, Washington DC has the highest murder rate (by gun) in the country. Why? Criminals will always get guns...no law will stop a criminal...because that's why they are criminals...they break the law.

Ladies & Gentlemen, it is ironic how many of you are missing the point. The gunman could safely bet that there would not be any other firearms in a Unitarian Universalists Church. If not for the bravery of the members tackling him, he would have potentially killed as many as he desired. It is precisely the perception that schools and post offices, etc., are gun-free zones that puts people at risk from nuts with guns. There happen to be over 200 million privately owned guns in America and 80 million plus gun owners. In many church congregations the attacker would have been dropped the moment he brandished a shotgun. I reference the brave plain clothes security woman who killed a gun wielding attacker in another church incident not too long ago. Somehow this has become a liberal - conservative issue, but everyone has a right to live. Chicago is another high crime/murder area that has almost total gun ban. This is not hard to figure out.

#6-postmark-If there's a will to get a gun, there is a way. I'm sure you've heard of the black market, gangs, and gun smuggling. Let's ban all guns so that only the gangs & criminals can have them.
