SCIENTISTS are launching a study into whether the "trash vortex", a plastic soup of waste floating in the Pacific, could harbour new forms of marine life.
Environmentalists have campaigned for action to clean up the vast expanse of debris thought to cover an area twice the size of the continental United States since it was discovered in 1997.

According to the United Nations, the rubbish kills mo
re than a million seabirds every year, as well as more than 100,000 marine mammals.

Syringes, cigarette lighters and toothbrushes have been found inside the stomachs of dead seabirds, which mistake them for food, as well as on Hawaiian beaches.

The rubbish vortex is held in place by swirling underwater currents. It drifts about 500 miles off the Californian coast, across the northern Pacific, past Hawaii and almost as far as Japan.

It is actually two linked areas, either side of the islands of Hawaii, known as the Western and Eastern Pacific Garbage Patches. They are connected by a thin 6,000-mile long current.

About a fifth of the junk – from footballs and kayaks to Lego blocks and carrier bags – is thrown off ships or oil rigs. The rest comes from land.

Professor David Karl, an oceanographer at the University of Hawaii, said more research was needed to establish the size and nature of the plastic soup before efforts to clean it up could be launched.

He is co-ordinating an expedition to the rubbish patch later this year and believes the vast expanse of junk actually represents a new habitat.

No doubt the new species will be named Flotsamus detritus and will wreak its vengeance upon us.
We should all be terrified and ashamed.

As much as I love China and will defend it at every opportunity, I have no doubt that much of this garbage originates here in China, for I have seen our rivers dump untold thousands of tons into the ocean on many occasions, and now I know where it is ending up. I'm sure that all nations relatively close to seas and oceans are guilty of this as well, and we all need to smarten up. Collectively we are destroying the planet, and collectively we need to tackle the problems and try to solve them.

Now professor David Karl needs to be slapped upside the head real good coming out with a statement like,
"more research was needed to establish the size and nature of the plastic soup before efforts to clean it up could be launched."
Like the old saying goes, no use crying over spilt milk, just get down there and clean it up.

We need to discover or genetically engineer lifeforms that can safely ingest plastics and metals, wood and glass. But I refuse to clean up its poo!!!

Boy Wonder #5: The only flaw I can see in your otherwise brilliant plan is that your creation would eat eveything we need to survive in the modern world.
A minor inconvenience if it means we don't have to recycle on our own behalf though. It leaves lots of time for skinning animals and stretching their pelts over stick to make shelters.
It could be a new dawn.
On further reflection we could just clean up at our collective @rse.

Well, at least you are prepared to admit that "much of this garbage originates here in China". But it is not the case that "all nations relatively close to seas and oceans are guilty of this as well" Many nations have made considerable progress in cleaning up their rivers.

China in contrast uses its rivers as sewers and rubbish dumps. If China aspires to global leadership and admiration it needs to clean up its act: at present it is an environmental disgrace.

New life forms. Now we know where all the New Labour Sleaze and Corruption Party supporters came from.

Officially the eco-fascists are all greatly concerned about bio-diversity.

In the unlikely event that these scientists find that new life forems are actually being evolved here, rather than just finding Hawaii is a pleasant place to do research, may we expect Greenpeace to be lobbying for plastic bags to be dumped their to support such endangered creatures?

I must confess to being confused here. We are constantly told that life evolved over millions of years. Yet these bozoos are looking for life evolving since 1997. Can someone explain?

I doubt if, since 1997, there is any possibility of new life forms evolving. The most which could happen is that rare but already existing microbes which can digest plastic would become nore common & ther might even be some slective evolution towards them digesting it faster. However

SLIGHT INCREASSE IN MICROBES ABLE TO DIGEST PASTIC MAY< OR MAY NOT< HAPPEN IN NORTHEERN PACIFIC

just doesn't make a catchy headline.

Professor David Karl actually said he "believes the vast expanse of junk actually represents a new habitat" which, of course, is different to saying that he believes new lifeforms may be present. The latter was only suggested in the headline and the first paragraph, and may be a misunderstanding.

There may be existing forms of seaweeds, barnacles, shrimps, anemones etc. that have a free floating spore/larval stage that might be able to use the plastic as a floating home in sufficient numbers to create a self-sustaining population, particularly if the seaweed can bind the bits together. Most other man-made environments become colonised sooner or later.

11, 12, 13# Thank goodness somebody explained this. I had visions of them finding some form of life and declaring the area a world heritage site, or area of outstanding scientific interest, The idea of P&O cruises to a floating rubbish dump crossed my mind. There again they already visit Greenock so that ideas already been thought of.

As big as the continental US? To me that's a very scary statement. They're not talking roadside garbage. This should be front page news on the entire planet. China may be guilty of the bigger part but everyone else took a toke also, I would think. The world court needs to take a lead here and get this flotilla cleaned up.

I reckon it's a new water park based on "Legoland" that someone has created on the quiet !!!

Call me crazy, but I find it funny that noone has taken any pictures of this giant plastic island. I refuse to believe in the boogey man. I apologize if anyone can direct me to pictures, but I cannot find any.
