THE United States has replaced Australia as the backpackers' favourite destination, partly because of the strength of the pound against the dollar.
The US was also the country that UK and Irish people were most likely to visit next, a survey of 2,500 travellers by the guidebook company Lonely Planet found. Spain was the next most likely destination, followed by Australia.

Never been to Australia,so I could not say. I have hiked a lot of the U.S.,Yosemite, Applalacian trail, C&O canal, and a host of others. If this is what you like, "come on in, take off your skin and rattle 'round in your bones" It's never been better for you guys, money wise.

And be prepared to be treated as if a suspect in a criminal investigation on entry to this FREE country!!

2Guga & 3 Bishop, I'm Edinburgh born and bred, been here in the US for 20 something years now, travelled all over the country and it is truly a beautiful country. Sorry lads but your comments are unfair and uncalled for.

I have also visited many beautiful parts of the US (obviously not as many as you) and agree with most of what you said. However, tourists ARE treated like criminals at airports. The worst, without a doubt, was Newark where I have never seen such a bunch of surly, unfriendly people gathered together in one place. They must all have been off when they covered "customer relations" on their training courses! The best was probably Atlanta - the queues were just as long but the staff were so pleasant.

Being banned from the states for having had the cheek to visit countries they dont like I would opt for OZ.

Still nice of them not to blow me to pieces with a cruise missile for having an opinion different to theirs!

Come to Canada and do some backpacking in our Canadian Rockies in Alberta or British Columbia.

Some of the most SPECTACULAR scenery in the world and we are polite, will treat you well, and you won't get murdered - but don't try and feed the the black bears - as some ditzy Japanese tourists do - PLEASE!

You may end up being lunch.

#5 JG, aye I know, the immigration folks at the airports are not the jolliest folk on the planet.

#8 Tim, agreed mate, Alberta is a beautiful province. I worked up in the Rockies for six months, a wee place called Nordegg which is about 90km from Rocky Mountain House, Alberta. Loved every minute of it.

Hi, Tim,Chester. You are absolutly correct about Canada, and you too, George F. And it's always a good idea to remember wild animals aren't called "wild" for nothing.
