A 70-YEAR-OLD Italian woman has confessed to selling or giving away 12 children she had from a secret affair.
Caterina Annarumma went to the police to clear her conscience. She insisted she had not done it for money but to give her offspring a better future.

She said the children were born between 1961 and 1979 while she was having an affair with a marri
ed man. Only four were officially recorded as adopted. The couple kept their 13th child.

She said: "We were poor and only had a little money. I sold the children I had, but not so I could gain but to give them a brighter future."

Mrs Annarumma sold her first child – a boy – for 500,000 lire (£250) which, in the early 1960s, was a small fortune.

At the time, she was secretly having an affair with her future husband, Nicola Stanzione, who was already married. The two saw each other in secret until 1988, when he finally divorced his wife. During that time, the couple had 13 children, and all of them were given up bar the last one, Gerardo.

One of the children, Marina, when she learned she was adopted, decided to trace her real parents.

Yesterday, Marina, a psychologist, said: "When I got there, it was very emotional. There was a lot of tears. My mother said, 'Sit down I have something to tell you', and she said that I had another 12 brothers and sisters.

"She told me that back then life was hard and that she was also seeing my father secretly. The children were either sold or adopted – the ones she sold she was paid about 500,000 lire for."

Massimo Cagnazzo, who is leading the police inquiry, said: "We have traced ten of the children and we are looking for two others.

"From what she has told us, she gave birth over a period of nearly 20 years to 12 children and either sold them or gave them away.

"Her reasons were that she did it not for the money but to give them a better future as she was living in poverty. She told us she wanted to clear her conscience as she was getting old and that it had been a weight on her mind.

"She said she had always loved her children dearly."

He added that it was unlikely she would be charged with child trafficking.

Mrs Annarumma said: "I wanted to get it off my chest – it has been on my shoulders for nearly 40 years.

I was seeing Nicola in secret. He already had a family and we were lovers and we had children. What was I supposed to do? Kill the babies? I gave birth in secret at home with my family protecting me."

American @#2,

OK! fair comment, but it has left its, ..'Mark on Her'

It reminds me of the song,,

And now the end is near
So I face the final curtain
My friend, Ill say it clear
Ill state my case of which Im certain

Ive lived a life that's full
Ive traveled each and every highway
And more, much more than this
I did it my way

Regrets, Ive had a few
But then again, too few to mention
I did what I had to do
And saw it through without exception!

We all do things that we regret, but to repent, shows our self wrongs,

Better this in a way, than going to your grave and never understanding the wrongs you have committed in your life.

Maybe the, ..'Head Strong' deserve all they get,
But in this case, I don't think so, afterall,

Why admit it now,?

A mixture of horror at what she went through and admiration for the love that lasted. WE have to remember that they were/are living in a catholic country, where in those days the pill was illegal and abortions still are. As she said, she was living in poverty. Yes, she should have gone through the proper adoption channels with each baby, but that would have also publicised her affair...such a difficult situation

wow what a secret to hide. i bet she was a devout catholic and ending a pregnancy would be the same as murder. it must of been easier to sell or give the children away then to go against her faith. i wonder what all the children she gave away are thinking and how they reacted to their situations.

are you angry because somebody cut some agency out of their "fair share" of the pie....?

adoption agencies have no "corner" on the "best homes for adoptees" market they are, most likely, a LOT less interested in these kids welfare...

Obviously the case of a very slow learner.

Seems it never occurred to her to just quit committing adultery with a married man with children.

Maybe she never figured out where the babies came from.

Or what about the man quitting cheating on his wife? At least SHE hadn't made a committment to someone else then lied!

JG, the man and woman are both beneath contempt, but if the woman had refused to continue the "love affair" there would not have been at least 12 children who "had" to be sold or adopted out.

No one mentions the wife and family of the married man. He was breeding like an rabbit without showing a trace of morality or responsibility for his offspring.

Both he and she apparently were living out a fanciful dream that their "great love" was the most important aspect of the entire scenerio.

Unfortunately this couple never thought of the 13 illegitimate children, the wronged wife and who knows how many legitimate children.

The man should have been neutered and the woman spayed like the animals they imitated for their own good and that of society.
