IRAQ cancelled leave for all its police and put them on high alert yesterday ahead of the withdrawal of US combat forces from Iraqi towns and cities at the end of the month, an official said.
The US pullback from urban centres has been seen as a milestone on Iraq's road to sovereignty six years after the US military invaded to topple Saddam Hussein.

But a string of bombings in Baghdad and northern Iraq this week, including two of the b
loodiest attacks for more than a year, have shaken the confidence of Iraqis in their own forces.

Security was tightened across the capital on Sunday, with troops and police closing roads and carefully searching cars.

"The alert has gone to all of our forces. There will be no days off. They are at their full strength across the whole country, at 100 per cent," said Major General Abdul-Karim Khalaf, spokesman for the interior ministry.

"All of our units have seen an increase in their numbers, not only at checkpoints," he said.

Prime Minister Nuri al-Maliki said on Saturday that the US withdrawal sent a message to the world that Iraq could handle its own security. The government trusted its forces to defeat al- Qaeda militants and criminal gangs, he added.

Two bombings in Baghdad and near the northern city of Kirkuk in recent days killed more than 150 people.

On Friday, a bomb killed at least 13 people at a Baghdad market. A string of other smaller blasts has also fuelled fears.

US and Iraqi officials have warned they expect the number of attacks to increase as the US troops pull back, and also in the run-up to a parliamentary election next January.

"The US is leaving Iraq in a far bigger mess than they found it.."

democracy is never perfect, neat or tidy; it's democracy.
If you can't grasp the idea that democracy reflects all the 'messy' contradictions of the people it governs, including the will of the people, then we can assume your brainwashing is complete.

If however, you're suggesting that society is far less messy when tyranny functions to solve the problems of any contradictions, and the dissenting people are thrown into mass graves, then indeed, that may be your will, but obviously not the will of the Iraqi.

Let them have their freedom with all the bells and whistles, they earned it

Carolyn, forgive me for saying so - but your response in #2 sounds a bit hysterical.

For the US to remove Saddam Hussein from the scene is not a big accomplishment. Let me explain why. Because back near 1960 or just prior the US rescued Saddam Hussein from Iraq when Hussein was a wanted man who would have been arrested and hung until dead by the Iraqi government if the US had not intervened then. The Iraqis at that time had a functioning democracy where executive & legislative leaders were elected. Saddam Hussein was one of the men who pulled that system down by shooting dead such leaders. The US protected him from the legal consequences that would have been imposed.

and we should also recall that there's been great violence about 1.5 million dead iraqis through such violence since the invasion occurred. The Iraqis were not killing each other in this manner before the invasion. Simply because the US imposes a regime does not mean that a democracy much less a benign sovereign government exists in that nation.

What I think you're lacking Carolyn is a basic understanding of human nature. Mankind is fallen. You should read the bible. the people of Iraq and other countries including America are imperfect. The governments we produce are imperfect. They are prone to being overtaken by evil forces.

I was listening to National Public Radio today. I think that the US empire is the greatest of all-time in history. Because the US is going to withdraw all combat troops from Iraq per an agreement with Iraq. The agreement came after negotiations during which the Iraqi president (Maliki) had a cousin who was accidentally shot dead by US forces. The US forces came to the house he slept at by mistake in the night. They got all occupants out to the living room, separated men, women, etc and by mistake pulled out Maliki's cousin from the group and shot him with 1 round through the chest, then left the scene.

and after this withdrawal that the US is going to execute the US will still have 58 permanent military bases in Iraq. They say that per the agreement we're allowed up to 50,000 troops to stay in Iraq after we withdraw.

No other empire in world history could vacate its military forces from a conquered nation and then leave 50,000 behind magically like that. Only the US!

I wonder if the new Iraqi military/police forces who've been so well-trained by the US will use the tactics of 'school of the americas' at fort benning? will they use the tactics of Operation Phoenix in vietnam? will they use the tactics of el salvador/nicaragua in the 1980's? People under-estimate that US military tactics are advanced and effective.

The US will no doubt have undercover personnel handle matters as needed. and nobody will stop the US from using these 50,000 troops they leave behind after withdrawal in Iraq or in the region in any fashion the US wants. If a bigger war is needed in the region, then the US will simply use these 58 bases as a staging area. Barack Obama promised in the campaign right on his web-site that he would maintain large military bases in Iraq permanently in case they were needed to fight other wars in the region. He kept his promise.
