Published Date: 19 August 2008
HEARTS have refused to comment on reports that owner Vladimir Romanov had addressed the squad which fell to a 2-0 defeat to Rangers on Saturday to tell them that goalkeeper Steve Banks could no longer be trusted to play for the club.
Banks began the season as the Tynecastle team's No 1 and goalkeeping coach, but he has now been relegated to the role of coaching the club's youths and his days in Gorgie appear to be numbered.

News that Romanov has stepped in to sideline the 36-
year-old, apparently likening him to 'Riccarton Three' rebel Steven Pressley, would belie new manager Csaba Laszlo's insistence last week that he was calling the shots on the goalkeeping position.

The arrival of Marian Kello from the Romanov-sponsored FBK Kaunas prompted Laszlo to deny Romanov had forced the player on him, but the demotion of Banks, a move the player himself is said to be upset about, would suggest otherwise.

Laszlo was known to want a clarification of Banks' position at the club, preferring him to choose between playing and coaching, but the alleged comments made by Romanov in the Ibrox away dressing-room on Saturday suggest deeper issues.

"Banks cannot be trusted, same as Pressley could not be trusted, same as (Andy] Webster could not be trusted," Romanov was quoted as having said to the assembled squad.

Supporters chiefs are said to be privately concerned at the latest reports of perceived meddling from Romanov in playing affairs, only weeks after it was announced the Russian-born banker had pledged to allow Laszlo full control.

However, until they investigate the millionaire's apparent intervention at the weekend, they are unwilling to pass judgment publicly.

Likewise, Hearts yesterday decided against adding to the controversy by insisting the matter was not something they would comment on.

On Saturday, Laszlo explained Banks' removal from the team which defeated Motherwell 3-2 on the opening day of the season and confirmed Romanov's intervention.

He said: "Steve has a new job. He has a new agreement with the sport director and with the owner. The decision has been made to play Jamie in goal and in the future Steve Banks will be the new goalkeeper coach. He will be on the training staff. We must make a decision and now the owner is here, and we have made a very clear decision, and I think a very good decision for everybody."

#1 & #2. Your comments are irrelevant as they come from fans who think that rioting, bigotry and sectarianism are acceptable.

Funny how The Scotsman is not backing up it's EEN man Anderson. Anderson reported Romanov's comments about Banks as fact, almost as if Anderson had been there in person to scribe it all down. Now The Scotsman only refers to "alleged" Romanov comments, looks like another well deserved slap on the face for BAnderson.

BAnderson's assertions look pretty weak, The hootsman can only say "Romanov was quoted as having said...", quoted by whom?

One can imagine that Banks would not have been too happy at a number of things that happened last week such as: Csaba saying Banks needs to do one thing or the other, Csaba referring to Banks as "not the real keeper" and of course another keeper coming in who is apparently not the only keeper Hearts want to sign before the end of the transfer window. So who knows what kind of discussions Banks may have had with Romanov.

At the end of the day Banks was never a long term option and had already played in more games than one could have envisaged. Time to move on.

#7 It's like one big game of Chinese whispers - what we end up hearing is many steps removed from what was actually said, which, in Romanov's case is first translated through an interpreter - meaning it is especially unlikely that what is reported is anywhere near the truth.

We should always bear in mind that anything Romanov is reported to have said has first been filtered through an interpreter's interpretation of his words then, in this case, through a player's tired brain after the game then through a Sun newspaper reporter's anti-Vlad filter then through the Scotsman's reporters. Anyone who's ever played Chinese whispers knows the end result is often very different.
7

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

19/08/2008 01:55:00
#14 No I said it was filtered through many people. But you believe the Scotsman - a paper currently running a story in where the headline says Webster signed for Stoke and the actual story, correctly, says he signed for Bristol.

Oh dear, here we go again.'Banks is not to be trusted, just like .......'
From the article above, 'Banks began the season as Tynecastle's no 1 goalie and goalkeeping coach...' -and after two games he's toast!! The usual Romanov accusations of disloyalty and, of course totally unfounded. Can you imagine Romanov giving lectures on loyalty? He gives the word 'paranoia' a new meaning, but of course he has to provide a 'rationale' to bring in another Kaunas player.
Totally and utterly pathetic.

Banks is 36 - I like him, but it is time to plan for his future as a coach. Good for Hearts to actually make a decision about the future keeper.

Of course Banks is unhappy - he wants to be number 1 - he is disappointed that he's been shunted - but life's tough, so he'll just have to suck it up.
11

GeorgeCowieOrWalterKidd?,

19/08/2008 02:19:05
#19 Here's another non-story that could or could not be true, just like the one above.

Rangers put in another bid for Banks before the game. Banks knows his days as No. 1 are coming to and end and said he been keen on the move. As he signed a new contract recently, Hearts said no as per their policy of not selling to rivals when possible. And, as per their policy of not playing players against teams they say they want to join, he was dropped for the Rangers game.

We won't know what actually has been said or not until either Banks or a teammate come forward to clarify things.

I'd also like to add that if Mikoliunas was to be found dead with fifteen knives in his back, he be booked for diving.

No facts just insinuation which is normal for the Scotsman but very tedious.
Why can't the chairman come into the dressing room and have a few words?
It happens at every club in the land on occasion but because it's Romanov it's a big deal.
Pathetic.

Didn't have a chance to read through the 400+ posts on the other story about Banks can anyone tell me if Banks was to be named first team goalkeeping coach would he need to have done a coaching course? If so is this maybe why he's been asked to coach the youth squad? But then I guess you'd still have had to do some kind of coaching course. Just a thought, if someone who knows could clarify this for me it'd be most appreciated!!!

#12, spot on, it's incredible. no wonder most of us haven't got the first idea of what to think about stories when we can't rely on the authenticity and accuracy of the guff that's written about our team.

gutter rag publishes any old tripe..... more credible publication's lazy reporter lifts story and re-hashes it..... more credible publication's sister paper again re-hashes story, citing "reports" as it's source.

all of a sudden there's a 'no smoke without fire' scenario in play, all based on the ramblings of the morons at the sun.

the truth is out there somewhere.

Gorgie's Finest,

Just how would the Sun get hold of Quotes or credible information, isnt there still a ban in place?

TBH i think something has happened, but maybe not in the case the papers are reporting. I can quite easily Vlad being raging after the game on Saturday, after all he did walk past Chic Young at trackside and say "2-0 to the scottish mafia" What i cant get is how an outsider in this case a reporter, would know word for word what has been said in a team dressing room, unless a player or coach or any physio etc has came out and passed the information on.

Equally Hearts have been very good recently and giving the fans information, and have been very quick to rubbish media claims when false. They clipped Bandersons wings quick enough over false reporting, so why have we heard nothing yet from Hearts? the longer the silence the more it seems like there is to hide.
26

#35 GF, what might help would be for publications that are supposed to have more gravitas than the guttersnipes to source their own stories and only print what they can honestly substantiate and back up. if that means less in the way of interesting hearts stories then so be it. no stories at all would be better than any amount of semi-credible hearsay.

if vlad has indeed said those things to the players about banks then he's a tw*t and he's wrong in so many ways.

#5 - "the reporters are gash on this website but anderson knows what he's talking about sometimes" .... therefore by definition at other times he doesn't.

#37 Lennny - Truth will out and we just need to wait to see what is underlying these allegations (because that's all they are at the moment). But we could live without it.

Johnny Jambo,

#27 - Banks does not need a particular qulaification to coah the first team.

I just find it incredible that he was dropped after one game since he was named as the No1 keeper at the club just before the start of the season. At the age of 36 he still has time as a keeper and will do a good job for someone. I think he will go soon as a player unless the regime decides not to allow it and squeeze him out as they have done so many in the past, and retain his playing contract.

Newcastle Jambo,

#33 Apparently the clown has always spoken decent English but prefers to give nothing away so acts dumb and uses an interpreter. He's the most untrustworthy little weasel ever associated with Scottish football. And that's saying something come to think of it. Just my view.

I hope Banks gets another club and keeps playing as long as he wants to. He's still a class keeper. Good luck to him.

Agree m8, I think if found to be true this could cause major problems and maybe thats why there has been no comment from Hearts so far. It's possible Vlad has lost it on Saturday and went OTT and now the spin doctors are trying to think of a way of calming this down. I just see flaws in both sides of the argument here. There is flaws in the reporting and how it would be obtained, and there is flaws in Hearts side by not commenting, and setting the record straight. It is also being reported that Banks is supposed to "Be Unhappy" with the situation, now Banks to all of us seems an honest guy and not one you would think would just roll over, so if he is so unhappy why is he still at Hearts? Id have thought he could walk away and claim Hearts have breached the terms in his contract if he has been unjustly demoted.

End of the day we now have one, possibly 2 (and maybe even 3 if the Hungarian comes) good keepers who can push each other even of Banksy is not about.

1) Its not worthy of comment until there is any tangible proof - it sounds like mischief making from the red tops who had the man they hate man in town.

2) He is a 36 yr old keeper who the manager had already said would not be the goalkeeper i.e. even if true would not be over-ruling the managers decision.

3) Supposedly credible papers have reprinted what gutter-trash with an agenda have sourced with no evidence - very poor.

What are we actually discussing here?

"Banks cannot be trusted, same as Pressley could not be trusted, same as (Andy] Webster could not be trusted," Romanov was quoted as having said to the assembled squad."

Barry Anderson/EN

"Banks cannot be trusted, same as Pressley could not be trusted, same as Webster could not be trusted," said Romanov in front of a bemused first-team squad."

Can anyone see the difference here in the wording claiming thse quotes. The Scotsman says Romanov was quoted as having said. EN states them as supposed FACT as direct quotes.

And people wonder why we find it difficult to believe stories. Banderson reported that story yesterday as if it was him that had onbtained the information, when in fact the story had been in the sun yesterday morning.

#4, #49, #54 and the rest - that head in the sand act can only go on so long, and it's already too long. It's giving Romanov so much leeway that's put our club in the position it's in now - basically knackered.

Time for even the most ardent Vladlovers to stop the paranoia - Banderson is a poor quality journo but it doesn't make his every utterance a lie designed to undermine the Jambos. Romanov - as usual - is doing a good enough job himself.

for quite some time now there have been all manner of berserk things happening at the club and many even more berserk things to have come from vlad's mouth. it's now the generally accepted view that vlad is very much capable of such outbursts which makes it believable when a story like this is either reported or manufactured.

that gives licence to anyone to print what they like and some people will believe it at face value, after all it's the sub we're talking about here.

romanov is a bit like miko in that regard. some people will simply assume he's guilty in the same way they assume miko cheats.

trouble making clowns in the gutter tabloids will know that and use it to cause trouble.

What do we actually know here? That Banks used to be player/first team coach and is now youth team coach.
The story about what Vlad said to the dressing room is just that, a story, it doesn't sound completely out of character to be honest - and if true then it's very, very, worrying. But what can we do? Give up on Vlad/Hearts completely because of unsubstantiated quotes in the EEN??

Fact is, Banks has been demoted. If he walks away from the club then we know it wasn't agreed with him, in which case, it's a disgraceful way to treat him.
By the way, the BBC story contains the line:
"The 36-year-old had doubled up as first-team player-coach but quit last week after manager Csaba Laszlo asked him to decide on his future"
Anyone know what thats all about - had he decided to just play rather than coach?
As per the old days, silence from Tynecastle when a simple statement telling us what was happening and why would put all our minds to rest. Maybe that light at the end of the tunnel was a train coming the other way after all...

I expect a statement on the website very shortly clarifying exactly what has occured and setting the record/sun straight.
Untill then can we have some better and wilder speculation as to what happened in the dressing room on Saturday because this has become very boring.

I did hear there was a big bust up at Riccarton on Friday between Miko & Banks about the colour of head apparel that Miko was wearing.Banks alledgedly said to Miko that wearing a red headband would look better for the cameras when he was jogging off after being sent off the next day.

This was just the ammunition Vlad needed to get rid of Stevie as he has always hated the fact that Stevie has his name on the front of his shirt as well as the back.

Don't know how many of you guys are aware that Hearts are having open training sessions for the fans to go along and watch at Riccarton, its starting next week, and will be 3 sessions a week.

Well in the information for those attending theres some do's and don'ts etc and also this disclaimer which is hillarious

It sounds very Romanovesque , but until it is confirmed by sections of the media with substance or credence it will stay in the background as far as yours truly is concerned. Probably true but many journalists have an agenda. If proven and also to be the way as reported by BAnderson , arguably the most important aspect is where did the quote come from - Who is the mole ?
Bet that a witch hunt is going on at Tynie right now - IF things are as reported. IF.

It is about time somebody sued this bully, cause that is all he is,a sad little man who treats his employees like servants,in any other avenue of life he would have been fined and gagged, when are the players union going to stand up for their members and when are the SFA going to hit Vlad with a "bring the game into disrepute charge",this moron is an embarassment to Scottish football,if Hearts fans are happy they are more deluded than the rest of us.

Storm in a teacup. Csaba wants a goalie thats not coaching himself, Banksy says nay, I want to do both, Csaba aint happy, Vlad steps in with Size 11's, I'm the boss and you will do as your told Bansky he says.
Media and Hibbees get over excited over nothing, and some idiots who support Rangers, as if we care what they would have to say anyhow?
End of.

All that I will say on this story is that Vlad did not mention Webster or Presley when he spoke to the players...

That part is total press fabrication....

After the Miko red card against Rangers the press are trying to stir the SFA are against Hearts thing....

Non story, player told he will be the coach and only the coach unless there is an emegancy. He was told this last year BTW.Hes not happy, tough Im the boss we need to get a good young keeper in for the future and he will want to be in the first team. Now your the well paid coach get on with it.
If he wants to play he will have move on which is a shame
because he seems to be good guy and he has done well in the past.
As for other garbbage surounding this story its wild Hibsman reporting nothing more nothing less. They are as reliable as Vlad unprdictable.Hearts wont talk to them for past nonsense printed in this paper and the jurnos cant get over the monkey nuts in the press room.I like my monkey nuts with salt just the as when im reading annthing printed in this rag.
JT for life.

EDINA SOUPERIORITY,

For a guy just into the job he talks far too much for my liking. I'd have thought that after only two league games he'd still be evaluating the squad and moving on those that he thinks don't match up...that of itself should,ve kept him away from the press, particularly if the club believes they don't get a fair deal from them.
Plain fact is that it STILl seems that Vlad is pulling the strings, since I find it hard to believe that anyone other than Vlad was behind the Banks demotion, and surprise, surprise, in comes another Lith...that well trodden route for successful players in the past.Their may be the odd success out of Lithuania, but the vast majority have been at best ordinary, and the moneys would've been better spent trying to persuade other SPL players to come to Tynecastle....but with the way we've been heading,...how many decent ones would actually WANT to come these days.
I hope I'm wrong, but I think the club is as far away from a stable planned way forward as ever, and I'v no confidence whatever that Vladness isn't still pulling the strings, albeit a little more craftily.
Does anyone REALLY believe that replacing Banks was virtually the number one priority??

Rarely comment on Hearts stories but would say that, reading through the comments from the usual suspects, most of you seem to be in the classic denial mode.
