Unemployment will hit a quarter of a million in Scotland, a leading business figure today warned.
And Government measures to tackle the "deteriorating" state of public finances are not good enough, CBI Scotland chief executive Iain McMillan said.

The economy is in "deep trouble", he told the Tory spring conference in Perth, with the CBI predicting it will shrink by 3.9% this year – the worst since the 1980s and "possibly" since the war.

"We expect unemployment in the United Kingdom to reach 3.2 million out of work," Mr Mcmillan said.

"That translates into Scotland, sadly, as over a quarter of a million people being out of work."

The UK will continue in recession for the whole of 2009, while the economy will remain "flat" in 2010, although growth will resume in the summer of that year.

But 2011 remains "a little far out" for the CBI to predict growth.
Manufacturing production will decline by 12%, household expenditure will fall by 3.4%, but Government spending will rise by 2.5%, according to the business chief.

"These economic numbers do not make happy reading," he said.
Output orders, optimism and employment are also falling, according to the confederation's industrial trends surveys.

He said public finances were in a "dreadful state" with the Bank of England and the Treasury needing to raise £200 billion in bonds to finance the deficit.

"That will double over the next four years," Mr McMillan told delegates.

"The measures in the budget to tackle the public finances and their deterioration, in our view, were not sufficient and the next Government will need to deal with that."

#4. Hey you - Numpty albion!

Stop coming out with cr-@p. There are approximately 2,500,000 people working in Scotland. Are you saying more two thirds of them are evading tax?

Tw@t. People like you should get the right to post taken away from you until you learn sense.

And by the way numpty heid, the real tax evaders are living down south and voting for your beloved Tory and Nu Lieingbastard parties.

I got made redundant, and can't find anything here in Edinburgh since 2 months! (got Honours degree and a master, it's not like i'm not qualified).

The agencies are reporting more than 100 applicants for any vacancies. Ok 100 is an average, the last agent I talked too today said over 70 for the particular job!

And in the meantime the "politicians" talk projects, future, whatever and nothing is really happening.

And in the meantime the "government" spend £400 millions pounds for a tramway that won't change anything. £400 millions that could have been used to create local jobs.

No, this society is sick, nothing will be done, politicians are useless, and no real current actions can happen.

I am also worried for genuine serious families who have been affected by that society crisis...

But hey that's life and it will never change (seriously, can a big current change happens? no it will be "planned, projected, discussed, applied, complained, etc..." all at the tax payers expenses!).

High unemployment is the price of having a labour government.

It just shows that we desparately need the economic tools devolved to the scottish parliament.

It would be interesting to know the true level of unemployment in scotland. In uk terms labour added 1.5 million more to incapacity in the last 10yrs hiding the true levels of unemployment. And we know the levels they inherited were bloated by the tories who also used incapacity to hide some unemployment. Just not on the scale of labour who make the tories look like amateurs.

If you attached your brain for a moment.

Brown and labour will not devolve the main tools of economic mgt. For instance control over fiscal policy etc. As such if Brown has control such basic tools of economic policy he must take responsibility for the mess he has made.

I feel genuinely sorry for you. An Honours degree and a master. What a waste. I accept that £400 on a tram service may not be a wise way to spend money but even more evil than this is the government spending BILLIONS propping up the banks, who then refuse to lend the money out to keep the economy (and job creation) going, meanwhile putting a sizable chunk of this money into their own pension funds. Bloody disgrace. That's the real crime. That is why people like you, who have obviously spent a lot of time and effort getting qualified, should be absolutely outraged.

Best of luck. I hope you find something soon. I don't know what you Honoured in, but Australia is crying out for professionals, especially Accountants, but other professions too. There is an "open day" in the Carlton hotel (I think) on Sunday so if you fancy it get along. You've nothing to lose.

Oops. That should be £400 million on a tram service! If only....

#11 Thank you!
I am considering Australia, but with the Girlfriend is not that easy!

Yes 400 Millions! for a tramway, and billions for the banks.
And nothing is going to happen with the responsible...

You are definitely right, what a loss of time to study! You don't got out more clever, you don't have better jobs, and you have lost 5 years of good work experience. I got everything in IT, the only environment where you have worked harder than law, finance, business students but you have a social/professional reputation of geeks. You also don't have reward for your skills as everyone knows about IT and the internet (at least everyone see themselves as mini experts)

--> loss of time!

Thanks Anyway !
I go and read more news about Government who declared as expenses nearly all of his home! They are clever actually, shame they get caught!

#8 agree.

But to clarify on the "government"; SNP were against the trams project.

Liebore however thought it was a great idea.

#13. Jseb. Try and persuade your girlfriend buddy. IT skills are one of the professions they are crying out for. Don't know if your girlfriend doesn't want to lose touch with family and all that but you are only 24 hours away in Australia, and you can keep in touch via email and all that.

I have relatives in Adelaide and they are saying Australia is cryig out for skills like you have. Give it serious thought.
