POPE Benedict XVI has urged G8 leaders meeting this week in central Italy to rewrite global financial rules and defend the world's poor from the effects of the economic downturn.
In a letter to Italian Premier Silvio Berlusconi, who will chair the summit, Pope Benedict appealed to leaders to "listen to the voice of Africa" and other developing areas.

He also called on them to "reform the international financial architecture" to ensure credit is made available for economic development and job creation.

The letter, published by the Vatican yesterday, was signed last Wednesday.

Leaders from the Group of Eight industrialised nations and other countries will meet for three days from Wednesday in L'Aquila.

Organisers expect 10,000 people to attend the demonstrations outside the meeting.

This charming message from the church that cares....as long as you keep donating. The Vatican gets richer, its followers get children....and poorer.

The last thing that Africa needs is money--- especially debt in the form of loans. Africa needs honesty, grass roots sufficiency, population control, organisation, devotion. Not the exploitation that money brings or the exploitation that religion has proven to give.
Mr Pope pray to your God for some inspiration.

5# Evidence suggests the opposite. The churches are emptying faster in the west than could ever be imagined. I wonder what popy thinks of this scripture when he's tucked up in his palace.

(James 2 verse 14) Of what benefit is it, my brothers, if a certain one says he has faith but he does not have works? That faith cannot save him, can it? If a brother or a sister is in a naked state and lacking the food sufficient for the day,  yet a certain one of you says to them: “Go in peace, keep warm and well fed,” but you do not give them the necessities for their body, of what benefit is it?  Thus, too, faith, if it does not have works, is dead in itself

Ah, I see anti-Catholic narrow minded, ignorant bigots read the Sunday papers. I wonder what the papers will have to say about B16's encyclical on the economy which is due to be published this Tuesday...they'll probably pick on one line, or one phrase and blow it out of proportion. As for you #6, it is clear that you know little of the tremendous amount of work done amongst the poor and disadvantaged by the Catholic Church.

I dont know why people insist that the wealthy should look after the poor. I always thought if the poor were left to fend for themselves they would one day also be wealthy. Maybe I am wrong!
The Pope is more than likely looking for more catholics in Africa.
Is it true that the vatican has enough money to wipe out global hunger?

#12 bobdan: is that the scriptures that were edited and rewritten after the first council of Nicea in 325A.D.? You know, the wee meeting where they made up a lot of stuff about Jesus to make him into a god that would be capable of entrapping half the world to a nutty cult led by a bunch of celibate old pharts who try to offer advice to families and men of the world about things they have never experienced. Don't try calling me a bigot either as that won't wash. I am merely extremely cynical of people who profit from running and ruining the lives of others. The good works that the church performs are far outweighed by the terrible harm they do. Why, if they are so good and great, do they continue to gather money from their flocks and only distribute a fraction to the needy?
You need to take off your blinkers and rose tinted glasses. Join the 21st century, an age of enlightenment awaits you.

I think the Pope should resign. What an outrageous farce.
