Published Date: 02 July 2009
NOT so long ago, he was the awkward teenager whose bushy hair and sullen demeanour seemed to create a barrier between him and many of the nation's tennis lovers.
Now, as his talent on the tennis court has blossomed, so has Andy Murray's following of female admirers.

As he coasted through to the Wimbledon semi-finals yesterday, the 22-year-old might have found time to glance up at the grandstands, where a phalanx of beauty queens and movie stars followed his every move. Indeed, sitting side by side were not one, but two Miss Scotlands – the current holder, Katharine Brown, an old schoolmate of the tennis ace, and a former holder of the title, Nieve Jennings.

Ms Brown is a qualified tennis coach, who has helped Murray's mother, Judy, to host sessions at Dunblane Primary School.

Also taking in the match were actress Kate Winslet and her film director husband, Sam Mendes, golfing star Sergio Garcia and Mervyn King, governor of the Bank of England.

Despite the temperature touching 29C, Murray shrugged off fears of fatigue from his dramatic late-night victory on Monday to clinch a straight-sets win over Spain's Juan Carlos Ferrero.

He was so much in control that his mother left Centre Court early to watch his older brother, Jamie, compete in the mixed doubles

Afterwards, Murray – who was also watched by girlfriend Kim Sears – appeared more flummoxed by questions about Miss Scotland than by anything his Spanish opponent had thrown at him.

Before the match got under way, Ms Brown had said: "We're going to try and buy some Scotland flags inside. Either way, you'll be able to hear us shouting for him in the crowds."

Shown TV footage of the two beauty queens cheering him on, Murray said: "She was at school with me. She was…annoying. She's a nice girl now, though. My mum has coached her."

At the post-match press conference, he was asked if he was pleased she had made the effort to go and see him play?

He said: "Well, she came to watch at Queen's. Yeah, I mean any time any of my friends or people… One of my best friends from school came to watch me the other night against (Viktor] Troicki. It's nice.

"So, regardless of whether it's a Miss Scotland – which I know is the angle you'll be going for – I'm happy that one of my school friends came to watch."

Murray, who has received messages of support from the Queen and Sir Sean Connery, revealed he had been given a handwritten message from Sir Cliff Richard.

But the man who upset some people south of the Border with a quip about the England football team clammed up when asked if he would be cheering on England in the Ashes cricket series. He slumped on to the desk, head in hands, before recovering his composure to say: "Yeah, let's go to the next one."

Murray is bidding to become the first British male to claim a Wimbledon singles title since Fred Perry in 1936.

Hundreds of Murray supporters had camped out for two nights outside Wimbledon to secure tickets to see their hero. And he did not let them down as he appeared to be in a hurry to swat away the Spaniard.

After his victory, one fan draped in a Saltire, Rebekah Caldwell, 21, from Kilmarnock, said: "He's got a good head on his shoulders and he's got what it takes to win … plus he's Scottish, so that helps. Everyone just wants him to do well."

Bookmakers narrow odds on a Scottish winner

BOOKMAKERS have now narrowed the odds on Murray winning Wimbledon to just 2/1, although Roger Federer remains a 2/5 favourite with Ladbrokes.

Spokesman Nick Weinberg said: "The Murray bandwagon is in full flow. He just gets better and better. Our liability increases with every round. We're bracing ourselves for a huge payout to patriotic punters."

Murray's passage to the semi-finals means one tennis fan has moved a step closer to winning a £16,000 bet. Merfyn Griffiths, a police worker from Wales, placed a bet five years ago that Murray would win Wimbledon in or before 2010.

Mr Griffiths, from Clywd, placed £60 at odds of 200/1 with William Hill in August 2004 on Murray winning Wimbledon, and a further £40 at 100/1 for him to win any Grand Slam.

Graham Sharpe of William Hill said: "Mr Griffiths is on holiday in Spain with his wife, but has been keeping in contact with us as Murray moves through the tournament. But he says he prefers to stay on holiday rather than returning to see the final should Andy reach it."

"Anyone but England" is a standard position up here, and it's not usually meant as a joke. So how do you know he wasn't being serious.

Do agree though. Brown's commment on his favourite goal was completely idiotic. I mean even if you thought it was the best goal you'd seen you shouldn't say that. It makes you wonder about the guy's judgement.

Excellent reporting Scotsman. We have a potential winner here with a few days before his most important match in the UK ever.

Best print some innuendo that will upset his girlfriend and cause unnecessary tension in his life.

Why are we just not backing his sporting talent. Not making up stuff about girls in his life. You could see watching the interviews he was visibly affected by the questions.

Hear hear. The grovelling politicians' quotes made my skin crawl too. The Blair one for me was marginally worse than that of Mr Stupid, late of Kirkcaldy, allegedly. Politicians should steer clear of blurting out phoney national favouritism in sport. They invariably show themselves up as vote-touting fools and end up with egg on their slimy faces.

All that flesh-creeping aside, Andy Murray has made huge strides (literally) in the last year as a tennis player. Greatly improved athleticism. And as a communicator. OK, he still kind of drones in a monotone, but we need to make allowances for one so young.

At least when interviewed he comes over as confident and, joy of joys, articulate. Compare your average football player with his predictable semi-educated clichés and see that Murray is in a league of his own. A credit to Scotland, that lad.

!Ya basta!,

Yeah, like they were really there to cheer him on. Right. Publicity seeking was the real reason for their attednance of course.

I love Murrays reaction to the question about the Ashes. Perfect response to a childish, provocative and irrelevant question. Don't Journos have ANY standards?

Good luck in the next round son.

"So who do you support in the Ashes Andy?"

What a bunch of complete morons are the English Press.

After the last controversy he told them what they didn't want to here.

"Yeah, next question."

Is this some sort of British Loyalty Test?

Next time just tell them you don't follow cricket. Just say "I'd rather watch paint dry"

Yup, you caught the mood. Paint? I'm, sure Andy would rather watch grass grow, in keeping with his sport. Cheap provocative "journalism" does nobody any favours. Least of all those they set up, ready to knock down again at the slightest slip.

Whatever the outcome of this year's Wimbledon men's singles, Andy Murray at the age of 22 has already acquitted himself. Sensation-seeking journalists need to learn the meaning of "back-off".

Agreed entirely. And another lot which gives journalists a bad name are those who shout out controverial questions to high up and famous people as they walk past knowing fine well there's not going to be a response.

Maybe someone needs to remind them why they entered the profession in the first place.

I have been watching Wimbledon since 1958 and never in a million years did I think that a Wimbledon final would feature a Scotsman. The whole thing just seemed so quintessentially English to me - like the Ashes.

So I am keeping my fingers crossed for Andy against Roddick and then Federer. What a joy it would be for the first BRITISH winner of Wimbledon since the 30's to be a Scot of all things.

Now what are the chances of Scotland ever beating England for the Ashes of English cricket?

Come on Andy.

How can a so called Scottish newspaper state Murray is bidding to become the first British male to claim a Wimbledon singles title since Fred Perry in 1936.

Murray is bidding to be the first Scot to win a Wimbledon Singles title.

#12 I suppose he could get lessons from The Glasgow Rangers on how to improve his personality by singing nice songs with his friends, and adopt a Gorbals "drawl"! Luckily Union Jacks are OK at Wimbers. What with Andy being a Brit and all that.

There's an increasing presence of Saltires, which is great, and a decrease in the wee red & white things, which is equally great!

What a load of cack.

Where do they get off interviewing Murray about who has come to watch?

Who cares about some little orange tart anyway? Not Murray clearly, but this hack has given her a bit of publicity. Does he know her perhaps?

Where are the Scotsman recruiting from?

Still, Murray nailed him with...

"So, regardless of whether it's a Miss Scotland – which I know is the angle you'll be going for – I'm happy that one of my school friends came to watch."

Ashes and the oddly named UKofGB&NI. Now theres a relationship.

We are at the fag end of an undemocratic, unwanted, pointless and immature relationship between nations.

Murray will become a Scottish icon and will help show the way, what is possible for Scots, acting independently.

Viva Scotland, and a great future for a great nation.

Some of the English say it so often it's now become the Gospel.

Just more lies by the London controlled media against Scotland, for which we are all accustomed too.

--
"I never said that but it is in the papers and people believe what's in the papers all the time."

Murray stressed: "I never once had a Paraguay shirt and I never once said anything about that."

I'm getting a bit fit up with these tennis commentators talking about the "dour Scot", his "Henman moment", his "lap dog look", the "first British player" since blah blah blah.

BBC/EBC, can't we please have a Scottish commentator? Even just for Scottish viewers? Duggie Donnelly used to "do" tennis, and he's an arch unionist to boot. He wid fit the bill. Or even Sally McNair. Why is tennis the preserve of a few select commentators who have nothing to do with the nation from which cometh the greatest player the UKofGB&NI has seen for more than half a century?

as I understand it the 'notorious' England comment came during a question as to how he thought Scotland would do in a tournament (cant remember if it was a World Cup or the Euro's), the person asking knowing full well that Scotland hadnt qualified whereas England were in it. Queue for 17 year old to then shoot back with how he wont be supporting England. Oh the horror! racist! jeezy peeps!

Having said that, I have had enough of Radio Scotlands endless interviews with fans at Wimbledon asking if they will be supporting Andy 'even though your English?!'. Its like Chick Young on a bad day. Stop it please.

NOT so long ago, he was the awkward teenager whose bushy hair and sullen demeanour seemed to create a barrier between him and many of the nation's tennis lovers.

There has never been a barrier in Scotland. When he made it crystal clear he considers himself to be a Scot first and foremost (as do the majority of Scots)he created a barrier down south because he denied his preferred nationality was anything other than where he was born SCOTLAND !

It had the opposite effect here in Scotland and whilst Judy probably thought better of the wisdom of saying so,publicly that is,I suspect even she was probably chuckling to herself privately.

Most Scots would agree with Andy Murray and if anything this endears him to the Scots in the crowd.
People in England do not see being British as a loss of identity because British is in fact to all intents and purposes an equal partnership which was NEVER equal nor will it ever be. When two countries are together and one is much larger than the other ,it never does and only the disingenuous would ever claim that it ever could, never mind has , (or stupid people of course).

The problem with the United Kingdom is it was never designed to benefit anybody other than the South, and if the lying Quislings who allegedly represent us
in London had even a scrap of dignity left they WOULD represent us in a manner which gave us reason to stay within the United Kingdom.
Demand equality might just save their precious UK,but I doubt this can happen now.
Many Unionists would argue Scotland does not have the right to secede .

Nationalists argue that YOU DONT HAVE THE RIGHT TO DICTATE GOVERNMENT TO US AGAINST OUR WISHES.We have the right to self determionation as does any former country.

We have been in this Union for 300 years because you claim we supported membership.
That has actually never been asked of the Scots in the 300 years either prior to the 1707 Act or the referenda which have taken place since.
If we accept that a

Its simply an arrogance or an ignorance to fly that flag when Andy Murray or Helena Baltacha are on court.

No one denies the right of the individual to claim to be English or Welsh or Northern Irish or British for that matter, but I also do not deny Andy Murray's right to be Scottish.Only ONE person decides ones nationality.

If Andy Murray wins Wimbledon he will not have done so on behalf of either Scotland or Britain. He will have won it for himself.

Murray is not playing at Wimbledon for his country(as football, or rugby players do for example - or as tennis players do in the Davis Cup) - he is playing for himself, so why people are saying 'go on Andy do it for Scotland' or whatever, is beyond me.
