THE internet is a force for freedom. The Chinese state employs 10,000 censors to monitor it and still they fail, so Labour's attempts to enact control over the web in a liberal democracy were always going to hit a few bumps.
But that wasn't going to stop them trying. So the party's general secretary, Ray Collins, and the Prime Minister's head of strategy, Damian McBride, brought in Derek Draper to be a tame blogger. Mr Draper then set up Labourlist.org and was promised a
ccess to ministers.

It was launched at Labour HQ and Mr McBride's old colleague Charlie Whelan provided Mr Draper's funding from Unite's political fund, the trade union he now works for.

They then pursued the unsustainable charade that the project was independent of the Labour Party.

If it had been an overtly Labour HQ project, then Mr Draper would have been accountable for his excesses and without doubt, Mr McBride would have baulked at using an official Labour channel for his smear tactics.

Sneering at Tories with lies about sexually transmitted diseases, mental health problems or homosexuality counteracts the very noblest aims of the Labour movement.

We believe in equality for all regardless of their sexuality and we believe in reducing the stigma associated with sexually transmitted diseases and mental health problems, not least so that people will seek early treatment.

Politics is the means by which a country is run and good politics means a country is run well.

But politics is also the name of a silly game played by silly boys in the Westminster bubble.

It's a fun game, I fully admit, and sometimes it just has to be played. But when playing a game is your ambition and your daily motivation, it's time to grow up.

Mr McBride and Mr Draper suffered from being in the Westminster bubble where all they saw was the game; where a lie here or a smear there are just bishops and rooks on a chessboard.

Somehow they had lost sight of that other politics – that which is concerned only with delivering a secure, fulfilling and sustainable society for its citizens.

Anonymous rumours have always been part of politics, although in the past they would be disseminated over boozy lunches on journalists' expense accounts.

This was the foundation of the cosy relationship between lobby journalists and their political sources. Yet with the emergence of blogs and anonymised e-mail accounts, politicians now have access to new vehicles for their gossip-mongering.

Blogger "Guido Fawkes" has benefited from a range of such tips, including those that have led to official investigations of think-tank The Smith Institute and of former chairwoman of the Conservative Party, Caroline Spelman.

I know many Labour figures who shun these silly games. There are many more who, like me, enjoy playing a game from time to time but who don't let it get in the way of more noble, long-term objectives. But this week, until this embarrassment dies down, every single one of us will look like a duplicitous, power-mad fool.

No opening or closing quotation marks in this (rushed?) report by The Scotsman's finest. It all goes to pieces from the 7th para (or maybe the one before, such is the ambiguity) onwards. This is reportage at its most woeful.

The internet is a force for freedom. And so Labourlist.org was set up to smear opposition politicians to the satisfaction of grassroot Labour members. It was wrong. But that wasn't going to stop them trying. Launched at Labour HQ and funded by Unite it was intended to be nothing more than politics. Politics is a game. Anyone can play! Sometimes I play. If you're reading this, maybe you want to play.

Anonymous rumours have always been part of politics. Nigel Griffiths is known in Parliamentary circles as "shagger". Geoff Hoon is known as "the landlord". Jacqui Smith...well...that's X-rated. Still, boys will be boys, but don't think for a moment we won't stab you in the back if you so much as look at us kok-eyed. New Labour. New something.

From Wikipedia:-

"At next United Kingdom general election, Alex Hilton will be the Labour candidate for Chelsea and Fulham in London."

"In November 2007 Hilton published content from the Facebook page from a daughter of Conservative MP"

Hilton is a real piece of work. The article is typical of the twisted garbage that has come to symbolize trough swilling Westminster careerists.

Excellent article that exposes the cynical contempt with which Gordon Brown and the Labour Party now regard the British electorate.

At a time of economic crisis with businesses, savings, pensions and job disappearing, they are using their time to create rumours, lies, smear and spin about thir opponents rather than concentrating on running the country, they job for which they were voted into office.

Gordon Brown talked of his "values" when he succeeded Tony Blair, "...this is who I am". Well at least these values have been revealed in public!

After a decade as Chancellor and two years as Prime Minister, any claim of competence has been removed as an economic crisis ravages the UK.
Despite writing a book on "Courage", his refusal to call an election immediately after taking over from Tony Blair made his own lack of courage obvious.
After the latest revelations, his credibility is in tatters.

Lacking competence, courage or credibility, his only redeeming quality could be compassion, put us all out our misery Gordon and call an election now!

What semi-sanctimonious rubbish.... Anyone that has spent a long time round Labour politicians knows they are corrupt and rotten to the core. Now that yet another Labour administration is being shown in its true mendacious colours out come the same apologists.

Many years ago I sat opposite a Labour councillor in Edinburgh and as I was speaking the socialist scumbag (who is now a new Labour MP) accused me of being a fan of child pornography.

It was completely made up on the spot but - as he murmured to me under his breath - the damage is done just by the accusation.

So please - after almost a decade of this cr&p from Labour, New Labour, Blair, Brown, Labourllst, LabourMovement.org, etc., etc., we are supposed to believe the HONEST good folks at Labour Home as a totally different type of socialist.

As they say over here in the good old US of A.... Phuleeze....!

Labour has one aim,to cling on to power by any means possible, nevermind the fact that they have run this country into the ground with their incompetence, and made a mockery of the political system with their corruption,at a barbecue yesterday almost every single person said they would not vote at the next election simple spoil their ballots in disgust at the parasites our MPs have become.

The problem with blogging is you need to have something to offer, Labour especially in Scotland do not have any policies just an empty mantra.
They are then stuck with scare stories, Inuendo and lies. This worked to a degree at Glenrothes but will not work at a GE. Reluctant as they are Labour are going to have to offer the Scots something big,

Alex Hilton's statement is wrong.

He said: "We believe in equality for all regardless of their sexuality and we believe in reducing the stigma associated with sexually transmitted diseases and mental health problems, not least so that people will seek early treatment."

That's not true. Alex may well believe in those things. It is now quite clear, that many of the leaders of the Labour Party do not.

There have been a lot of good Labour Politicians and Councillors over the last few years. Also a lot of bad ones. Funny enough, Australia has the same problems. A bit like Trade Unions, they appear to be comfortable with what they have, why should they join the 21st Century. The human race in general is a right scruffy bunch of individuals, you would think that by now they would be able to sort out the right from wrong. Unless of course they expect an equally scruffy bunch of aliens to do it for them.

From Wikipedia,(regarding the author of the article)

"Hilton is defending a defamation suit from Johanne Kaschke regarding an article on Labourhome"

"He was threatened with litigation by "Conservative Future" Chairman Mark Clarke after making attacks upon Clarke on the blog"

"Hilton published content from the Facebook page from a daughter of Conservative MP Nadine Dorries,"

Alex Hilton is a seriously flawed individual and "The Scotsman" is aligning itself with this type of labour scum by publishing Hilton's poisonous drivel.

WallaceJohn,

Jo'Burg Jock and others are quite right. There is no way at all Alex Hilton can write an "Analysis" of this situation. He's too close to one side.

The word analysis in the headline is surely a late Scotsman April fool's joke and with their shares currently sitting at 8p when they were about 461p two years ago - they should be catering for their readers with proper, factual analysis not pandering to a London based Labour spokesman who knows nothing at all about Scotland.

Mr. Hilton wants to do a Barack Obama hence his alignment with Jag Singh. What he doesn't realise is that the Obama campaign built on an earlier campaign by Howard Dean four years earlier. Obama supporters/followers had eight years in the political wilderness and wanted change. Obama's campaign didn't start a year before the elections.

The other glaring omission from Hilton is that both Dean and Obama had the best in the technology arena working on a strategy for success. Unfortunately John Prescott, Alistair Campbell and Dolly Draper who are self-confessed technophobics, but found that they can send a video from their mobile phones, does not a strategy make.

Unite's 100k for Labour Lost.org was unfortunately a sure sign of their members hard-earned money being dribbled down the drain. Remember that Barack Obama's campaign got around $800 million in receipts. That amount would have bailed out the Dunfermline Building Society.

Unless Alex's buddies stop spending their book advances and public speaking fees and use them to hire the quality of strategists that Obama and Clinton had, then they, like us, have no hope. Like the people who voted for Obama - we want change.

There is something rotten at the core of the Labour party that is eating it away and it is called New Labour. Under Blair and Brown, the Labour Party has become solely about the pursuit and retention of power. In its desperation to retain power New Labour has routinely indulged in politics that are so dirty, smear filled, personalised, and negative, that they have reached a new low in UK politics. Its agent provocateurs are brutal, malevolent, mendacious and extremely unpleasant. Some infest these blog posts. One man is more responsible than most - Gordon Brown.

In the much-vaunted 'court of public opinion', the verdict is that Brown's is a government which has lost all direction or semblance of coherence. It is pitifully, woefully, even dangerously out of its depth. It is devoid of ideas, denuded of principle, absent even of endearing personalities. In Scotland, it has long since ceased to be a Labour party and is now simply the anti-SNP party, infected with the canker-ridden sourness of temper tantrums that flow from someone having ‘stolen’ their sweetie.

To know the corruptions runs deep in the Labour party we only need remind ourselves of a certain unctious Scottish ex-priest who spent all day spinning slime and sleaze stories about Scotland's government.

Now we have Jim Murphy, Secretary of State Against Scotland.

In the USA, political parties like the Republicans are delighted when off-the map right-wingers, such as Rush Limbaugh, give themselves an identity and inflated ego by spouting lies and clap-trap in talk radio shows. One day they have nothing, the next they actually own the show AND the radio station.

Where did they get the money?

It's been quite sad to read the comments and opinions on the Labourhome site. Unlike a lot of other posters here, I have genuine sympathy for those who's once great party has been stolen from them by the parvenu charlatans and carpet baggers that are New Labour. But when are they going to realise that the party is literally over ? It's like the famous Norwegian blue parrot. It's deid and it can't be revived. Wake up people.

Perhaps "The Scotsman" allows this type of article as an excuse to help him pay his legal costs.

reading councilor hinds blog, she says the following
My colleague Cllr Andrew Burns has written extensively about this (see here), but I think the main point about the Tram saga is the complete absence of dynamic political leadership. In the past Labour Council leaders would have had the main players in double-quick to try to resolve the situation, but we have had a deafening silence and a huge leadership void from the Lib Dems.

Not so with the SNP though. Spotting what they perceive as a passing bandwagon, they couldn't resist jumping on it, mangling the truth in the process. The SNP have to decide whether they want to be part of the administration or not and demonstrate a bit of political maturity. They like the kudos of being in charge, but when the going gets a bit rough all you hear is "it wisnae me!" They might have opposed the tram development initially, but councillors, including the SNP, have agreed unanimously to try to get the project finished. The city demands nothing less. Talk of abandoning the project now (£200 million spent for nothing?) is ludicrous.

The development of a modern, integrated transport system is key to Edinburgh's future, jobs and prosperity. How many people arrive at Edinburgh airport and wonder how to get into the city centre? Go to Amsterdam, or any other major European city, and you have a choice of transport options from within the airport terminal. Here we have to walk some distance out of the terminal to f

Go to Amsterdam, or any other major European city, and you have a choice of transport options from within the airport terminal. Here we have to walk some distance out of the terminal to find a bus or taxi. No train or tram. Doesn't the capital city of Scotland deserve the best transport system?
and on voting
Proportional or what?
The introduction of PR for local government elections was meant to result in a fairer system, with the electors' choices more fairly represented. It was always going to mean that in most authorities no one party would have a majority and that some form of coalition would result.

Ignore for the moment that no voter in Edinburgh was told in advance that the Lib Dems and SNP would form a joint administration, and therefore was not given a chance to vote for or against this proposition. (Perhaps parties should announce in advance of the election which party they would be prepared to enter into coalition with? Just a thought.)

Post-election what happened? The administration ignored the premise of proportionality and established a committee structure, which gives them an in-built majority on each committee. This, I understand, cannot happen in the Scottish Parliament, where the principle of proportionality is extended to the committees also.

This means that the views of opposition parties are stifled, despite the fact that we collectively have as many elected members as the administration. It seems like a throw-back to the old first past the post days.

This may sound a bit like sour grapes, but I think if we are going to have PR, it should be applied consistently.

Like your convoluted moniker your three-post rant is garbled. What do you mean by the phrase I lifted out of it. It appars as accuation without substance.

As for your comment, "How many arrive at the airport an onder how to get into the city cenbtre" - almost all new to edinburgh, so they tak ataxi or a bus.

Edinburgh has one of the best integrated bus services in the world - electric buses an easy substitute in time if wanted, and they can actually reach the kerb.

A tram destroys thoroughfares and clutters mid-views with overhead cables attached to poles or conservation buildings.

It is a complete waste of millions of taxpayers money, the outcome of proportional representation, a system whereby a government is forced to take on an obvious costly white elephant in order to get its own policies approved.

Friends and readers. As usual rumours are flying around the Community about this and that, and as usual Pilton Sucks has it’s finger on the pulse.

It appears we are told that our favourite Community newspaper NEN has gone trendy left in it’s thinking with Labour supporter Ken Smart on the board alongside Martin Hinds partner of our favourite catwalk queen Lesley, coupled with reporter and former Labour Councillor Dave Pickering,it’s almost like a Labour love in.

Of course we are sure that their politics will have no bearing in the content of the paper——that’s a laugh——but we have been told that our Lesley will appear in the centre pages this month modeling the lastest Valentino creations just to brighten up the paper.

We have also been informed that the Edinburgh Association of Community Councils will be holding their AGM on 20th June 2009 in the City Chambers. We are also told that current chair Norman Bonney will not stand for re-election.

Meanwhile the NET [North Edinburgh Trust] formely the Pilton Partnership has been going through a period of transition. Former manager Ian Cooke has left for pastures new and a new leader is still out there waiting to be found. Although it appears the Trust is already on to it’s second temporary manager according to the circulating rumours.

Strange they can find two stand in’s but can’t find a permanent one, could it be as one cynic put it–they can’t find one who votes the right way–

On the subject of voting, many people will not have missed the Edinburgh Evening news last week which published oue MP’s expences, and who came near the top of the trough?why our old friend and comrade Mark well heeled Lazarowicz, who told the readers after his massive claim was published that he needed all that dosh just to run his office.
