A BRITISH soldier was killed on patrol in southern Afghanistan yesterday.
The soldier died when an improvised explosive device was triggered in Sangin in Helmand province, the Ministry of Defence said. Next of kin have been informed.
Brigadier General Richard Blanchette, spokesman for the International Security Assistance Force, said: "I offer our condolences to the families and friends of our fallen soldier.
"This soldier died honourably, helping bring security to Afghanistan."
The soldier is the 117th British serviceman to be killed in Afghanistan since November 2001. He was from 1st Battalion The Royal Irish Regiment and was killed while on a routine foot patrol yesterday morning, the MoD said.
