SMOKING costs the NHS more than £5 billion a year – up to five times the previously accepted figure, Oxford University researchers said.
Illness and disability linked to smoking puts a "huge burden" on the health service. The largest proportion of the money spent on illnesses caused by smoking was on cardiovascular diseases, which cost £250.8 million.

Rubbish!

So much for them saying that the brain-dead smoking ban would save (quote) Thousands of lives a year (unquote).

Either this "research" is total rubbish or they were lying to us about the brain-dead smoking ban.

Either way, they should scrap it.

I'll tell you.

£10 billion in the years 2006 - 2007. It'll be around £11 billion now. In other words the good smokers of this country are subsidising the NHS to the tune of £6 billion per annum.

So stick that in your pipe and smoke it.

When they start recognising the different types of smoking and acknowledge the different risks of each---for instance, cigar and pipe smoking is orders of magnitude safer than cigarette smoking---and bin all this passive smoking rubbish, I might just start listening to them.

Who's to say 1/2 of that cardiovascular disease wasn't caused by obesity?

I would wager smokers are being blamed for a lot of diseases that had nothing to do with smoking. Have they determined yet if toenail fungus is smoke related?
