'Scotsman'... congratulations on being the seventh most visited news website in the UK.

Questions, for anybody who knows the answers, (including Scotsman staff, anonymous or otherwise).

... Where do you stand relative to Scotland? I.E.Your rank in terms of the most visited news website in Scotland?

...How is a 'visit' defined. If I 'visit' (and don't post) 50 times is that fifty or one visit. If I post 50 times is that fifty visits or one visit?

If we all know the answers to these questions then your political forum could be the most authentic 'by the minute' political poll in Scotland. You may not like the tenor of the results but in terms of being a measure of success you will attract the greatest participant readership that you ever imagined. Whether that translates into advertising pounds only you will know.

Good for you. I am a mere sassenach, but I served with Scots in the Royal Navy, and we spent many holidays up there. I read your headlines every morning and I always have a Scotsman calendar above my desk. I have also sent an Australian contemporary (ex R.A.Navy) the calendar and pointed him to your website.
Keep up the good work.
My best wishes

Unique users would be the more "eccentric" bloggers amongst us!

That would be, well, all 3.8million of us then!

Well done Scotsman, you got something right at least and you provide us with a fairly relaxed platform to "do battle amongst ourselves" without the anally retentive moderation that other websites do. You know who you are coz we pay our license fees to ye!

6

Ken S.,

England 06/04/2007 08:27:41

I agree with the congratulations. 'The Scotsman' might not always agree with what we write but still lets us write it - and in real time rather than with moderation delays.

7

Alex.,

06/04/2007 08:28:32

You can than Hearts and Hibs supporters for it! What football supporter reads the FT?

8

Boy Wonder,

06/04/2007 08:57:13

Now if only it will tell us it's moderating policy, since it seems to be all over the place at present.

What does it take to be Scaramouched?? How can we avoid it??

9

Yane,

#10 Did ya wanna be Scaramouched or not wanna be Scaramouched? You could see it as a badge of honour. Where is he by the way -- not banned again?

Sadly since Phil A posted him as a plagiarist getting all his material from amiright.com he has become reclusive.

11

Yane,

#13 I don't mind Jacqueline. Sport is something you do for fun & the sake of yer health -- I would never read about it.

#12 Is that true Jim Lad? He wasn't making up those songs? Geez -- ya feel like a babe in the woods sometimes aroond here.

Phil A made the accusation not i,but i enjoyed his little songs pity he felt the need to take the credit

Big Brother,

(the Orwellian original) 06/04/2007 10:04:19

yeah, right!
A good number of these 'unique users' were actually Paul Voltaire and his multitude of alter egos.

14

I'm no really here,

06/04/2007 10:09:44

It's one of the few forum's that allow immediate postings. Well done, just a pity that your journalists could sometimes use grammar lessons, like me.

A unique poster, I think, is some "One name, one e-mail address". I haven't tried, but can you use a different name and same email address, or visa versa, like Paul Voltaire?

15

The Man who shot Liberty Voltaire,

06/04/2007 10:19:15

16.
well he's gone now and good riddance.

Who was it made poor little Paul Voltaire run?
"Twas I", crowed The Hexagon,
Spitefully cackling,
"Wasn't it fun?"

16

Royster,

06/04/2007 10:44:40

I think this more or less proves what many unionists have been thinking all along - that the SNP has told its activists to target the chat rooms of Scottish newspapers for propaganda purposes. I'm sure the number of visits will drop sharply shortly after the election. Could the Scotsman keep us updated on this please?

#21 Sure thing Uncle Jo -- you tell us what tae think an' then we'll thunk it.

20

Mikey,

06/04/2007 11:21:35

Jeez Royster. Your paranoia knows no bounds! Why not just accept you're in the minority, lumped together with Rangers supporters, Orangemen and BNP morons?

21

Boy Wonder,

06/04/2007 11:27:57

#10. His wife told us yesterday he has been in hospital since Tuesday morning, but didn't want to say anything since a certain person accused her of 'looking for sympathy on the forum'.

#11. If you look at that website as I did, everyone's plagiarising. After all they have not paid for the rights to the music or words. Therefore, how can you plagiarise a plagiarist?? Besides, having checked over the last month of Scotman/EN issues, Scaramouche did not claim to have written all his submissions, but did alter parts so they fitted with the article. Several of the 'works' do not appear on the Amiright website, so I assume Scaramouche did write these.
Personally, it doesn't bother me, but I have enjoyed the man's wit and humour. I hope he hurries back and shares with us again.
What's your problem, Jim Lad? Jealous much??

22

Yane,

Melbourne 06/04/2007 11:42:19

#23 Sorry Alex -- couldn't think o' anything wurse than a noisy car race... I've been to the dog races... boy! That was an edumucation. Have you ever gone out gambling with someone who gets s***** when they don't win?

23

jim lad,

the capital 06/04/2007 11:49:48

#25 Boy Wonder-----Your very quick to tell people to look at certain posts, well look at mine i answered a question from Yane and said it was an accusation from Phil A whoever he/she is and i went on to say i enjoyed his little songs. Am i jealous, you bet i am because even if a small part of the songs are his hand i don't have the talent to do it and on previous posts i have told him so, so i'll remain jealous but honest and i'm sorry you have a problem with that.

#24. Mikey et al. I know my comments might look paranoid to the casual observer but I'd be really interested in seeing the numbers a week or two after the election. It's just that statistically the number of absolutely rabid SNP supporters who regularly post in this chatroom seems suspiciously high. Of course I could be wrong but I think there's a reasonable chance that I'm correct. If not then I apologize.

29

Royster,

#32 Yeah maybe-- but they only bring it up when the issue is Scottish politics. I don't notice SNP stuff coming up in the International section or the Odd & Quirky section -- & sorry, but you're the first tae bring it up here...but whadda I know? I'm in Aust...

Does anyone else have technical problems with the "Find the UK's cheapest loans" -ad? In my browser it duplicates half of itself from the right side smack in the middle of the page. I've tried both Firefox and Explorer. Can't remove it, can't read the headlines or news under it. Very, very annoying. I haven't got any response from the scotsman.com when I complained about this. :(

32

Ken M,

Stenhousemuir 06/04/2007 17:44:39

Scaramouched indeed. I'll get to that.

The forums are good and liberal which is what people want although I reckon alongside many others that the paper version is heading downhill into redtop/magazine style big time.

Bring back Scaramouche.
If he has been outed as a plagiarist, so what? All he has to do is apologise and then provide us with his databank of song parodies along with the appropriate credits.

33

Ken M,

Stenhousemuir 06/04/2007 18:47:14

Afterthought on the Scaramouche thing. I do not suppose that even Phil A would object if one of his song parodies was introduced by the resident DJ, Scaramouche.

Given the figures published in this mighty tome for its online readership, his work may just be reaching a wide audience, courtesy of Scaramouche.

Come back, Scaramouche as the DJ, and play them again as you know where to find them and when to play them.

8# Hi Ken nice to hear from you. Ken years ago when I just started work The Scotsman was the No 1 paper in Scotland for fair and constructive reporting. My local newsagent tells me he now sells more copies of the SUN than the SCOTSMAN. I stopped my morning delivery about 10 years ago and if I am in the local library I may glance through the pages.

Mario Antoinette aka lots of things,

I would put most it down to these guys ...

Turqouise Hexagon Sun
Everything you do is a Balloon
Astro Turf

Maybe 3.8 millions hits Scotsman , but 3.8 million unique users ? Dont flatter yourself , I generate a different IP everytime and so do a lot of others.

Otherwise , you could be simplz lying ...

36

Mario Antoinette aka lots of things,

06/04/2007 20:50:20

cataibh , The sun has been outselling every other UK newspaper for YEARS.

The most popular broadsheet is The Telegraph.

The Scotsman is the worst selling broadsheet .

Royster

Although I disagree with almost everything you post, I recognise that you, along with many of the posters on this forum, have contributed for a long time. And for that I give you credence.

Please afford other REGULAR contributers the same right.

What worries me is the recent vocifeorous 'new' members - AM, Upbeat and a few others, who have suddenly 'appeared' and can spend up to 15 hours daily dishing out their rubbish.

Come back at me with some nationalist 'new' posters if you will, but most of us are here genuinely, have been for a long time, and still will be after the election. Do you think AM and his many aliases will still be here?

Congratulations, "Scotsman"...if only you weren't so addictive!!!
Perhaps you should put warnings on your member registration form.

I was delighted to find an article by Dr. Robert L. Dabney, a Virginian Presbyterian minister who was touring Scotland in 1880 and writing to the editors of "The Central Presbyterian" periodical. He wrote as follows:

"I have sent you by this mail the copy of the "Scotsman," containing the end of the famous Robertson Smith case [a Free Kirk Professor at Aberdeen being tried in the General Assembly Court]. When you read it, I know precisely what scrap of school-boy lore will rise to your tongue....'Parturiunt montes; nascitur riduculus mus.' "

"But don't you say it, you naughty fellow! Remember your manners. "The Scotsman," whose editor in chief they say, is not a Scotchman at all, is in Edinburgh very much what the "Herald" is in New York, able, unscrupulous, employing the spryest reporters, veiling a secret enmity to the gospel under an affectation of high liberalism. Doubtless the picture he gives of the debate is as faithful as graphic. Such manners in an ecclesiastical assembly, would look very queer to us Southerners, who were habituated to the 'Barbarism of slavery.' But we shall learn in due time, and reconcile ourselves to this higher model (Impressions of Scotland, appeared in "The Central Presbyterian," June 16, 1880; vol. 15: 46, pg. 1.)."

Dr. Dabney would have been one of your best online contributors if he had been here today!

Thought you might like to know how famous you are in Virginia. Many thanks for your wonderful online debating society.

#44 Addition-

Forgot to give the source of the R. L. Dabney quote in #44. It is from "Discussions by Robert L. Dabney, D.D., LL.D., edited by J. H. Varner, Vol. V, Miscellaneous Writings, Sprinkle Publications, Harrisonburg, Virginia, 1999, pp. 10-11).

#36 Petja: Yes I have the same problem. The intrusion of advertising superimposed on the news copy is extremely irritating. The format of the "Add Your Comment" space also seems to be distorted. Hopefully it is caused by a mistake in the page design which can be fixed. I'll give it a few days, but if it continues beyond that Scotsman.com will lose a regular reader of some years standing. Pity.

#43 Wee Shooie: I have received two copies so far. Hopefully Scotsman.com is having some sort of a (fixable) technical glitch.
