SYRIAN authorities have blocked Facebook, the popular social networking website, over fears of Israeli "infiltration" of Syrian social networks on the net.
Lebanon's daily As-Safir reported that Facebook was blocked on 18 November.

Of course the Syrian government has blocked Facebook. It has nothing to do with Israeli infiltration. It has to do with the Syrian peasants daring to be critical of their government and that's a big, fat no-no in Syria.

I'm no really here,

The fall of the Iron Curtain in the early nineties can be traced to greater communication links between east and west. The communist countries could not prevent their people from seeing and then wanting what people in the west had.

Islamic a countries, and ones like North Korea and China are fighting hard against allowing their people the ability to see what the rest of the world is like. The reason is to protect and keep an elite of corrupt politicians and hangers-on in power (sound familiar doesn't it). They will fail eventually.

Tell me anyone. What is the difference, apart from extent, between what Syria is doing and what The Scotsman did last week by banning posts on Wendygate articles.

#2. I'm no really here
Interesting question, your last sentence, especially as I didn't see the Scotsman "banning" thing previously. Are we talking pots and kettles here or was The Scotsman slapped by a D-notice?

I live and work a lot of the year in China, and while everything on the surface works just like it does in the west, which will come as a surprise to some foolishly ignorant duck-eggs on this site who tediously advocate "boycott the Olympics" and suchlike, it's true that a corrupt political elite is struggling against the odds to protect what they have.

They will ultimately fail, like the late, unlamented, Soviet Union dinosaur, because the people know what they want, and the people will eventually decide. A matter of time. Interesting times.
