EMBASSY maker Imperial Tobacco said cigarette sales had slipped as smokers curbed their habit following the UK-wide smoking ban.
The group, which makes the UK's two top-selling cigarette brands - Lambert & Butler and Richmond - improved its UK market share during the past year, but saw volumes decline following the introduction of the ban in Wales, Northern Ireland and England
.

Imperial, which is in the process of acquiring Spanish rival Altadis, said it expected this impact to decline over time, reflecting similar trends in Ireland, where the ban has been in place for three years, and Scotland.

The company said its overall performance was in line with its expectations for the year to 30 September, with volumes and margins both higher, following strong performances from JPS, international brand West and premium brand Davidoff.

Market share continued to grow in Germany, despite a declining tobacco market, while profitability across western Europe improved after it hiked cigarette prices.

The company, which also produces Golden Virginia rolling tobacco, said it continued to look for opportunities to expand its geographic reach. During the last year it launched the Davidoff brand in several new markets.

In July, the group announced its proposed £11 billion acquisition of Gauloises and Fortuna cigarette group Altadis. It said it expected to receive approval from the Spanish regulator in the next few weeks, after which the offer will be open for approval from Altadis shareholders.

I agree.
I buy their products in Spain where there are increased sales due to this Country's taxes and a Government that ignored the wishes of 14 million voters in favour of ill-founded 'science' from so-called health experts.
Even today the healthist lobby should be hanging its head in shame at the report showing the damage their peanut policy for pregnant women has caused.
From the Telegraph -Dr Tara Dean and Dr Carina Venter are calling for a review of the Department of Health advice to provide "clear, consistent factual advice and information" about the "real risks".
Government accepts healthist advice, enacts extreme policies and close their eyes to the many adverse downsides of their decisions.

Probably because if smokers can they go abroad to buy the products instead of the heavily taxed and lower quality UK ones.

Where's David from New Mills? Off to Spain to have a pint and a fag, perhaps.

As others have commented these figures fail to take account of smuggling and more importantly Web purchases which will actually reflect in the market share of the country of origin. Any cigarettes purchased from mainland Europe will now be massive given the high level of UK tax. This is just a Tobacco company playing HMG at their own propaganda game whilst developing markets elsewhere.

As a smoker I have no objections to less people smoking and a reduction in tobacco consumption. However if this is only more propaganda being spun by ASH and the government, lacking any factual basis, I think we need to know. I really quite object to way ASH and HMG have blatantly mislead the public on passive smoking, which is virtually harmless and has come out and said the smoking ban is "good for business" line. Pubs not serving food in England have a 20% reduction in takings on average. I am afraid the emperor is stark b0ll0ck naked.

Anti-fascist, the real scandal is that the Scottish Parliament pension fund has shares in Big T. Nothing illegal in that but just a tad hypocritical.
