FRENCH fishermen yesterday staged a brief "go slow" protest in the Channel as part of their continuing anger over EU fishing quotas.
About 31 fishing vessels sailed north two miles off the coast between Boulogne and Calais, but outside the ferry lanes, before turning back at about 10am.

A Dover Coastguard spokesman said: "There was a protest in the north-east lane of the Channel. Around 31 French fishing vessels joined up, going up the lane very slowly.

"It meant ships in the area had to take avoiding action, but it did not affect ferry services."

We should be thankful for having the French as our neighbours. If they were Somalis they would be hijacking every ship travelling through the Channel and holding their crews for ransom.

The French fishermen's grievance should be directed against the EU Commission in Brussels, which imposes those fishing quotas, or against the EU Parliament in Strasbourg, where the MEPs rubberstamp everything.

However, the fishermen are taking their grievances out on innocent travellers, be they hauliers or holiday makers. Given how many hauliers run their businesses on a shoestring, they will be directly affected by this Direct Action of the selfish French fishermen.

Compensation, if it ever comes, will take years. The French do not pay fines levied on them by the EU Court. They have a word for it: "communitaire", i.e. pretending to be super-Europeans but, in fact, being totally French. Vive l'exception française! All EU rules apply to everyone else but ourselves.

#1: your comment is puerile.
