UNEMPLOYMENT in Scotland went up by more than 41,000 in recent months, figures revealed today.
The increase takes the jobless total to 176,000.

The number of people claiming the jobseeker's allowance has risen by more than 3,500 in the space of a month to 125,000, the figures showed.

The jobless total for the whole of the UK increased by 232,000 in the three months to April to reach 2.26 million, a 12-year high.

Scottish Secretary Jim Murphy admitted: "These latest figures are a real blow and reflect the job consequences of the global economic problems."

He went on: "Scotland has shown a greater resilience to rises in unemployment than elsewhere in the UK, but today's figures again show the seriousness of the situation.

"The UK Government will do everything possible to support jobs in the economy and to help people who have lost their jobs get back into work."

And the total has risen by nearly 54,000 since last May.

On the wider measure, unemployment rose by 41,000 to 176,000 – 61,000 higher than a year ago.

On this measure, unemployment is now running at 6.6%, up 1.5% on the previous quarter.

Enterprise Minister Jim Mather said Scotland still had lower unemployment than the UK average, and a lower level of economic inactivity.

"Today's figures underline the importance of Scottish Government action to keep people in work or help workers regain employment," he said.

"The recession clearly continues to bite hard, and we remain steadfast in our efforts to position Scotland's economy for a strong recovery, and attract investors to create new jobs.

"But the UK Government must recognise that its proposed £500 million cuts in Scottish spending next year threatens 9,000 Scottish jobs – exactly the wrong course of action in these challenging times."

You see Jim Mather can't stand the thought of public sector jobs being cut despite the fact the nations in debt.

THIS IS OLD LABOUR WITH A KILT ON.

If some of these jobs were kiddy on jobs invented by Gordon Brown just to make up for the 900,000 jobs lost in the UKs manufacturing industry since Labour have been in power then why shouldn't they be cut?

If they are kiddy on jobs then they are non-essential.

No doubt we'll get a lecture on "front line services", blah, blah, blah.

The usual smokescreen.

What about trimming salaries in the publilc sector say by 5-10% until we're out of this recession, then eh?

Its happening in the Private Sector while our Jim, THE MILLIONAIRE, must already be planning his summer hols.

NICE WORK IF YOU CAN GET IT.

Jim Murphy is a real toad. Toes the party line everytime and is a sickening sychophant.

Gordon Brown not responsible for 1 job loss of course...nor the highest unemployment figures in 12 years...nor the de-regulation of the banks that have led to the unemployment.

It's all 'global' isn't it Jim!

How does the numpty Murphy work out Scotland has shown greater resilience? We have 8% of the UK workforce and today's rise of 41,000 in Scotland represents 17.7% of the total UK rise of 232,000. Seems to me we're getting shafted again as usual.

What do you suggest the SNP cut in order to fund these projects?

There is no spare cash and with Westminster imposing a 500 million cut next year...what would you do? How about removing 500 million from the health budget?

Sound ok?

The 'Union dividend'.

London spends money on war and nuke subs. Westminster is a layer of government we can't afford.

Westminster Administration should hand the control of the Job Centre's in Scotland to the Scottish Government.

May be then the Job Centre would actually listen and give proper support to the people who are looking for work.

None of this daft got to be unemployed for 6months or more before you get any support.
