EQUALITY groups, including gay and lesbian organisations, are to receive £6.1m in extra Government funding.
Communities Minister Stewart Maxwell has announced the cash boost for equality and gender issues groups.

The money will be spent on schemes working with women's groups, people with disabilities and the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT)
community.

Maxwell said the funding was a symbol of the Government's commitment to a "fair and inclusive" Scotland. It will be spent over the next three years, and will see £3m go to nine projects tackling sex equality and sex discrimination. A further nine projects in the LGBT sector will share £1.7m.

Projects to assist disability organisations and disabled people will receive £1.4m.

Funding for gender equality will go to projects working in areas such as the gender pay gap as well as schemes helping women into employment though flexible working. Cash will also be spent on a helpline run by Amina, the Muslim Women's Resource Centre.

There will also be funding for a scheme to combat domestic abuse in households where gay, lesbian, and transsexual people live.

Maxwell said: "The Scottish Government believes a successful Scotland is civilised, fair and inclusive and provides equal opportunity and choice for all its people.

"The kind of Scotland I want to live in, is a Scotland in which all people can benefit from all the country has to offer."

Are the SNP simply and pro-Independence Socialist dafty party. The equality that needs to be highlighted or rather inequality is the poor way in which men are treated.

The SNP success will be short lived before another party emerges.

What is the context of this 2 million pounds a year funding? Is it new money, or just recycling of past equalities money which has now ended?

The reporter has just swallowed Mr Maxwell's press release and not asked any questions.

I don't trust the SNP on equalities, given its links with Mr Souter and all the other homophobic Holy Willies, and this story deserves a much more critical and analytical approach.

....schemes helping women into employment though flexible working...."

Why not have schemes to help MEN into employment through flexible working? - or would that be equality?

What a total waste of taxpayers money. They'd be better suited to putting the money towards helping old people insulate their homes. Or are the rights of homosexuals considered more important than the lives of the elderly?

Salmond is in favour of Muslim schools where muslim kids will not be subjected to the pro-gay propaganda that his party promotes.

Well Mr Salmond, if your pro-gay rights propaganda isn't acceptable to the muslim community why should the rest of the Scots be subject to this.

Anyone who had doubted the SNP are a loony left party just needs to read this article.

No wonder Tom Farmer has told Salmond to "prove" himself.

How about equality in British public life? Labour are considering reducing the amount of Scots in the cabinet due to racial reasons.

In summary:-

Labour - a party of racist quotas denying talented people of advancement due to their race. (Parochial racists)

SNP - actively increasing equality and participation in Scottish life for all who live in Scotland. (inclusive internationalists)

I thought the SNP would be our saviour, unfortunately they look more and more like our doom.
why is it that a party will speak a lot of sense to try to win an election, then having done so,they start slavering away like tribe of demented monkeys

The SNP still need a bit more time to prove themselves but really they can't afford any more daft expenditure like this. Where has this cash come from? for me it would be better spent on making the lives of the old, the handicapped and the young terminally ill better. Mind you politicians don't represent the will of the electorate and how they'd want money spent if they did we'd be out of the EC and a Life sentence in jail would mean just that.

# Maxwell said the funding was a symbol of the Government's commitment to a "fair and inclusive" Scotland.

What about the many elderly citizens of Scotland who
have been abandoned in many cases to be imprisoned in care homes, due the £60 or £40 million pound underspend on care of the elderly depending on whose figures you believe, what about their equality.

This underfunding has not come out of the blue, as I was part of a group who submitted a petition to the Scottish Parliament Petitions Committee in February 2003, although it was discussed,it was then binned with no action taken whatsoever.

It is clear it does not matter which political party in in power, as the elderly do not contribute to economic growth and are a burden on government resources, they have been abandoned to spend their remaining days (in many cases) in abject misery and distress.

Scottish people should be standing up, and telling the politicians we do not accept our elderly members of society who have to enter residential care being treated in this inhumane way.

Duh! You only just realised that? The SNP's greatest success is to con people into thinking they are some sort of Tartan Tories. The SNP are a Tartan Old Labour. Big State, patronising and controlling. With a big dose of right-on hand-wringing. Think Islington Council in the 1980s and you've got it about right.

# 14 Draco etc

I had a hunch, it's just happening with increasing frequency that makes it absolutely clear. It's useful, to see exactly what we've got with the SNP in government. I expect implosion in their council vote and a reduced number of MSPs next time around.

Islington Council and Lambeth and Haringay and Hackney and Brent etc etc - aye, it's all becoming clear. Independence to remain Dependent - OH THE IRONY!

Another wonderful wheeze thought up by a fat government official sitting in a lovely office with nothing better to do.

Wish there was a way I could stop this waste of your money.

3 Because in most households it is women who look after the weans and also it is mainly women who act as carers for elderly relatives. It is mainly women therefore who apply for flexible working.

That's not to say this is the case in all households - of course it isn't - but it is the case in most households.

We have the word of Alex et al that their prime objective is to produce this "Celtic Lion" economy matching or beating Ireland with its 7% growth rate. I would be interested to learn how this piece of pork barreling will help that.

Oh dear. I am an SNP supporter of many years but I start to question things when I see money wasted on rubbish like this. It reminds me of Ken Lingstone's wasteage in London. If religious Muslim phone-in charities get a million or two in Scottish Government (ie. tax payer's) support then why not a charity for ethnic minorities like, for example, us Finns (we are, after all, tiny in number compared to the Muslims)? But oh no, we don't count do we? It's one law and one big budget for some and nothing for so many others.

The very notion of "equality groups" makes me feel queasy. As #21 mentioned, Livingstone's London was and is awash in wasted taxpayers' money given over to the likes of gay and lesbian outfits.

I would understand the migration of this madness to Scotland if the government was Labour-coloured. Well, maybe things are beginning to unfold. This is a criminally irresponsible waste of money. I pay taxes in the Scotland and the UK and I am rightly aggrieved at this development.

The SNP is skating on thin ice, and this stupidity will surely alienate current supporters and put off future voters. Think hard on this, Alex Salmond. This is your watch. For now.

Foreign trucks had 9700 accidents last year with a cost of £52.4m. Side swiping was the main cause. As the driver sits at the left of the truck, there is a blind spot on the right when any other vehicle overtakes them. Whilst legislation exists to deter British truck drivers from driving illegally, no legislation exists to deter foreign truck drivers.

If the Scottish Parliament introduced legislation to ensure equality with all truck drivers, not only would it save money but more importantly, people's lives.

Money wont last long. It'll soon be eaten up by councils who are happy to fork out £700 - £1000 per day to bring in diversity trainers to berate their staff.

The SNP is turning out to be another Scottish Socialist party.

For a real opposition, vote UKIP.

What excellent news! it is great to see the SNP putting their money where their mouth is. The continuing discrimination against women and minority groups needs decisive action and that means funding the organisations that reach out to these groups and work towards creating a more equal society. It is disheartening to see the blatant racism and sexism in most of the other comments in this thread but proves how endemic discrimination and lack of understanding about equality issues actually is and why we really need this money.
