Mountain biker gives world cup taster

TICKETS have gone on sale for one of the most eagerly awaited events in the Highlands' sporting calendar.

Fort William's Nevis Range will again play host to the spectacular Mountain Bike World Cup. More than 500 riders from 35 countries will descend on Lochaber for the three days of gruelling competition in June.

The event, first staged in Fort William in 2002, is estimated to have brought in at least £10 million in economic benefit to the area.

Last year's event saw about 40,000 spectators take in the world championships in Fort William, in what was widely seen as the biggest ever sporting event held in the Highlands.

One of last year's stars, Ruaridh Cunningham, 18, from the Scottish Borders, won the world junior downhill title.

He gave a dramatic display of his skills in West Princes Street Gardens in Edinburgh yesterday to help promote this year's event, which is being held from 6-8 June.

Mike Jardine, spokesman for event organisers Rare Management, said: "The mountain biking world is looking forward to the mix of adrenalin, fun and entertainment that is synonymous with the World Cup."
