MacAskill rejects call to pay MoD bill

KENNY MacAskill, the justice secretary, yesterday said Scotland should not be made to pick up a £370,000 bill from the Ministry of Defence for policing two major summits.
The MoD claims it is owed £320,000 by Tayside Police in relation to the G8 summit at Gleneagles in 2005, as well as £50,000 from Fife Police for the British-Irish summit in St Andrews in 2006.

Mr MacAskill has written to the Home Secretary, Jacqui Smith, and the Defence Secretary, Des Browne. He said: "This government fully supports the aims of both summits. The dispute, if there is one, is between governments – not with our police forces."

It all depends on who requested the MOD to assist with security.
If it was the government then they should pay, if it was the local constabulary then the police should pay.
I agree with #2 The SNP are quick to release certain items into the hands of the media.

Actually you have it the wrong way round
Event organizers pay the police for extra manning
Why on earthe should the POlice be paying the UK Government for an evernt organized bty the UK government for the benefit of the UK government (and Blairs ego)
The Tayside, Lothian and Borders constabularies had to pay out vast amounts in extra manning of the events. Now the vindictive pratts in the MOD (Des Browne) want the police to pay them!
They should tell Des Brown and Jacqui Smith to get stuffed!
It also begs the question as to why this was never discussed during the lifetime of the previous Labour Libdem Administration?
