A DUMPED dog suffering from the advanced stages of cancer was the worst case of animal neglect a vet had ever seen, police said today.
The nine-year-old rottweiler was dumped in an Edinburgh street by its owner, who had failed to get any medical treatment for it, officers said.

The emaciated male dog was suffering from cancerous growths to its paws, which had burst and were bleed
ing, as well as a collapsed lung where the disease had spread.

Only hours after it was found and taken to a vet on Friday, a decision was made to put the dog down to end its "horrific" suffering which is thought to have lasted several weeks.

Police are now hunting the owner who left the rottweiler chained up outside a house in Trinity Road, where it was found by a distressed resident.

The dog showed no sign of having had medical attention and officers think it was dumped after the owner chose not to seek help.

If traced, the owner could face charges under the Animal Health and Welfare Act 2006 for "causing unnecessary suffering to an animal" or "through inaction allowing an animal to suffer". Courts can hand out a maximum of 12 months in jail, a £20,000 fine and a life ban on owning an animal.

Sergeant Jill Geany, from Drylaw police station, said: "The dog was chained up on the pavement outside a house. Officers were called by a resident at 11am and they found the dog was very emaciated and could barely stand up. It was tired and in great pain.

"The officers had to carry the animal into the van before taking it to a vet.

"The vet examined the dog and found it was in the advanced stages of cancer. He said it was the worst case of animal neglect they had ever seen."

The rottweiler was wearing a black collar with gold studs and a green lead with 'Harrods' on it.

Officers made door-to-door inquiries, but drew a blank.

The vet who treated the dog at the Braid Vets Hospital, Mayfield Road, said: "The dog was very thin and weak. It had a large, painful growth on its left forepaw and the cancer had spread to its lungs. It had been in the advanced stages of the disease for several weeks.

"The dog had been denied veterinary care to ease its suffering. It's sometimes difficult to prove wilful neglect, rather than being wildly ignorant, but the fact that it was abandoned and the severity of its condition suggests neglect."

Even owners unable to pay bills can visit the PDSA, while vets' surgeries would never turn away a suffering animal due to costs.

Scottish SPCA Chief Superintendent Mike Flynn said: "We are very concerned at the dreadful condition this animal was in.

"We would expect whoever has done this to receive a life ban."

Anyone with information can call police on 0131 311 3131, or Crimestoppers in confidence and anonymity on 0800 555 111.

You are soooo funny - have you ever thought of going into comedy?

Scum don't have bits, especially the type of scum that do this to an animal. By saying someone has 'bits' would indicate that a person has a certain degree of balls, and that is one thing that people who neglect animals most definately do not have.

I hope whoever had this beautiful animal and left it to suffer in such agony suffers exactly the same fate.
That is the least they deserve.
Courts - sit up and take notice - when this does come in front of you make sure it is a LIFE TIME BAN!!

no1 i'm really worried about your response to this story do you have any feeling towards this animal or do you have a need to say something or to get something off your chest

there was NO need for this dog to suffer,if the owner was too skint/stupid to pay for treatment(which may have saved the poor creature if it were caught in time and treated!)they should be very heavily punished,as ive said before,,,,lock them in a room with some hardcore animal rights activists, they deserve a severe punishment, not a fine or ban from keeping animals but a permanant reminder!!!

#11 Braid vet is sadly my emergency vet at the weekends. My dog suffered a stroke a few years back on a saturday and they wouldn't even euthanise her unless i was able to pay the £200 to do it there and then. luckily i had the cash on me. She was bleeding internally and was in pain yet they wanted £100 to see me on a saturday, £50 for the jag and £50 for cremation.

PS #11. i use Dundas Vets now. they're really kind and have never turned me away when I've not had money for treatment. Only thing is they pass emergencies onto the Braid surgery.

#11 and 12 im sorry to hear about your bad experiences with braid vets,my cat had his innoculations there it is only dealing i have had with them

id say to anyone to get pet insurance, vet bills are a small fortune, but no one would see their pet suffering in any way, what this person did is just cruel and stupid

You guys need to change your vets , vote wth your wallet /purse. There are plenty compassionate vets out there. We had been going to our vets for so long they wiaved the euthanisation charge when my darling girl had to be put to sleep also due to cancer. I asked about it and my vet said he felt awful as in his heart he didnt want to put her to sleep , he thought she was a fab dog.
How humane is that?

I too hope that for that owner of the dog what goes around comes around and they are left ill , in pain and lonely. Lets see how they feel then.

#14 elayne insurance is often a rip off they wont cover you eventually for long term chronic probs such as heart , arthritis , skin, cancer etc etc.

8# "beautiful animal"?

Did you read the same story as me? I kind of got the impression it was more of a skinny thing with manky paws.
17

The real dracula,

24/06/2009 19:04:00
#16 generally animals will become skinny if they have cancer as the cancer ravages their system stripping them of nutrients. Its 'manky paws' had cancerous tumours on them.

Are YOU human cos you cetainely are not humane

Poor soul, I hope they catch the sod that left him.
I'm another one that wouldn't touch Braids,I've also had bad experiences with them as have quite a number of people I know. Dundas are the best practise in Leith.

#15 your vet sounds good, its always a hard decision to euthanize a beloved pet and your vet sounds like a caring person, our vet is expensive but thorough and very caring, nothing is too good for iggy(my lovely cat)or my pet pigeons(caramel, one eyed jack, milk and goblet)

I am completely outraged at yet another example of animal neglect from the scums in this city. God knows what would happen if this was done to a relative. But because it is an animal, most folk don't care.

Like the article said, if you cannot afford the vet bills, then one phone call to PDSA is all you need to do. Not just dump sick animals in the street and wash your hands on them.

It's a bit cruel to starve somebody ain't it?

So it is cruel to starve someone but OK to be cruel to animals? I don't think so.

Animals are just brutes really but you should show them some respect at least and not allow them to suffer.
