ONE of the most dangerous streets in Edinburgh could be set for double yellow lines.
Hawthornvale in Newhaven has had a catalogue of problems in the last few years, including emergency service vehicles being blocked and some drivers playing a form of "chicken" by driving towards each other.

One of the reasons cited for the perilous state of the road is lines of parked cars on either side narrowing the road. Coupled with sharp bends and being the main link between the waterfront and the centre of Newhaven, community leaders, local politicians, and police, have long wanted a permanent solution.

Although the council doesn't have any definite plans to install the double yellow lines, it is understood to be in the pipeline.

Leith councillor Marjorie Thomas said: "Cars parked on either side of the road is causing a problem there and it has been considered that putting double yellow lines either on the corner or the whole way up the street may be a solution."

Police recently ordered residents not to park on the kerb as it was causing difficulties for wheelchair users.

Funny there is a similar situation out at South Gyle because they koonsul didnt think far enough ahead when applying 2 lines of yellow paint to stop inconsiderate parkers

There are MANY other streets in Edinburgh that are highly dangerous due to on street parking. Much of the congestion in the city is caused by on street parking, both illegal and revenue generating.

It's about time the council built new off-street car parks. They still generate revenue, but keep the streets safe and clear which helps reduce congestion.

It won't make any difference. There are double yellows at the corner of Hawthornvale and Newhaven Road. The vans use them as loading areas. It's impossible to see past them at 8.00AM.
Why not get rid of the pavement on the south and introduce herringbone parking? Then if Hawthornvale was made one way the traffic could move smoothly.
That is, of course, if our council has any interest in smooth flowing traffic. With all the bumps and road narrowing they have done, I doubt it.

I live in Hawthornvale and always try not to park on the pavement, occasionally I have to. If I'm coming home late at night I sure as hell ain't parking miles away and walking home alone. There is a pavement opposite the side where people park and wheelchairs can EASILY get down that side instead of walking down the middle of the road as some people do. Drivers DO NOT pay chicken when trying to pass each other, well not in my or my husbands experience and if the council do put yellow lines down where are we all going to park? They will need to provide somewhere.

And since when was it "the the main link between the waterfront and the centre of Newhaven"? I think that is more likely to be Whale Brae, which although wider is even more dangerous as you can't see cars coming down the hill due to it being a blind spot and the road narrows at the top with cars on either side.

Rant over!
