CAMPAIGNERS fighting to limit the number of large events held in the Meadows are preparing for another battle to stop a funfair setting up in the park for almost three weeks.
The protesters are furious that another major event could be given the go-ahead by councillors, despite a ruling in May that no more new events will be scheduled until they agree a new management plan for the park, including an annual limit on future
events.

The funfair application will go before the council's licensing committee next week and campaigners are pleading with councillors to listen to their concerns.

This latest application comes just weeks after the green light was given to the Moscow State Circus to take place in the Meadows this summer.

The main arguments being put forward by campaign group Friends of the Meadows against the funfair are that prolonged events damage the grass and prevent local residents from using large areas of the park.

There are also fears that the funfair would set up beside the cricket pavilion, which could lead to games being cancelled.

Chris Wigglesworth, convener of Friends of the Meadows, said that when you take into account setting up and dismantling times, the funfair will be in the meadows for about three weeks.

He said: "This new application has just come in and as far as we can tell they want to put it beside the cricket pavilion.

"People are really annoyed about this, having campaigned to get long events removed. Having ruined one area they are now going to put this in another area and ruin that too.

"Long events damage the grass and we can prove that.

"The main annoyance is that there's going to be a real shortage of places for people to relax during the busiest time of the year.

"If the weather is anything like last year, it will turn into a mud bath. We feel we have won the argument it's just a case of whether the councillors listen to what people want."

The Friends of the Meadows group campaigned tirelessly to prevent the Moscow State Circus from being granted permission to operate from the Meadows from 13-31 August.

A vote on the application at last month's licensing sub-committee meeting resulted in a 4/4 split decision, with convener Colin Keir casting the deciding vote in favour of the event taking place in the Meadows.

Paul Godzik, Labour councillor for the Meadows and Morningside ward, said: "Promises have been made to the community and those promises don't seem to have been carried through.

"Hopefully the process will be in place for next summer and then the community can have their say about events on the Meadows."

A council spokeswoman said this event was already planned before the ruling was made on banning new events.

She added: "This application will be considered at the licensing sub-committee next week."

A few " worthies " with too much time on their hands wanting to stop the enjoyment of thousands because the grass gets flattened. Pathetic.

It's about time a section of the Meadows was transformed into a permanent area for such events.

There are several ways to reinforce the grass to keep the look when there's no event, yet make it substantial enough to support events.

There are also areas far enough from residents to keep disruption to a minimum.

The Meadows are a shared amenity for ALL the residents of Edinburgh, not just those fortunate enough to be able to afford houses bordering this space.

A few Marchmont nimbys trying to ruin it for the rest of us. Last time I went for a funfair, it was banged up beside the Ocean Terminal shopping centre - a rubbish location.
The funfair attracts many people to the Meadows, and it's a great location in our great city. It's where funfairs should be. Number two - great comment, I completely agree.

hhmm killed HERSELF? surely that's nothing to do with being at a funfair!?

let the funfair come, and the circus, and the music events, and fringe sunday...etc etc etc events of this scale bring in 50 times more visitors and business to the city than it would cost for a few new slabs of turf every couple of years? There's always been things on that spot as far back as I can remember....why change it now? well i suppose it will move on the arrogant "we own this big bit of public land and you can't sit here" cricketers...shame

I recently witnessed one lazy Funfair businessman drive his Mercedes across a soaking wet Meadows one evening just to park beside his 'Waltzer'....

The result : nine inch deep horrible muddy gouges in the ground all the way from Melville Drive ..

Did he care ? Not one bit !! Totally selfish and no respect for the property of others !!

#2 - I couldn't agree more.

Friends of the Meadows don't seem to realise that the Meadows are in fact a public space. Considering the size of the Meadows I think holding events in one part of the area is a good idea.

Surely this would stop all the grass from being in a constant state of decimation as Friends of the Meadows like to imply it is.

#2 A very well expressed comment. You wouldn't think that Chris Wigglesworth, convener of Friends of the Meadows was a former councillor and he raised no concerns or objections when his party was in office.

so the gypo shows are back, ripping everyone off,so it must be summer
nothing said about the food fare in thee meadows,or the lady boys(gorgie tonys fav)
when the food fare was in full swing,it was filled with locals and chinless wonders, all wanting to rub shoulders with the tv chefs
the reek of snobbery destroyed the delish aroma from the chefs wares
how many local men say they are off for a G+T but slipping into the venue to watch lady boys
the sale of newspapers and MACS must have hit the roof
the meadows im sorry to say belongs to everyone in edinburgh be ye rich or down and out,it is for your enjoyment
not the preserve of nimby snoots

Could we not just tarmac it? That way we can use it for parking cars during the week, Sunday car boot sales and places that gypsies can camp while trying to find new places to stay. It is central and has many pubs nearby AND the big bonus is the grass will not need to grow back as it would have to do if we leave it as it is.

dear or dear.....the same old faces at scotsman.com making their wee jokes and trying to get one over on each other. I wonder if any are capable of listening then communicating in a quiet and thoughtful way?

Anyway, as several have said the Meadows are for all.

However, so are parks at Granton and Wester Hailes.

I can't understand why funfairs don't set up in these places. There would be fewer complaints from local residents and the fairs would probably make more money, as customers wouldn't have to travel so far to get there?

Plus why should central parks have all the events when other parks and local businesses, such as at Granton and Wester Hailes, would jump at the opportunity to have these events nearby?

Another point: we are not comparing like-with-like here. Fringe Sunday affects the grass for a day or two. Taste of Edinburgh for maybe 4 days. LadyBoys and the funfair are around for approximately 3 weeks, therefore far more damaging to the grass and far longer-lasting noise and visual pollution.

#35 - I worked in Granton for 4 years and I can assure you that it would not be a safe place to have such an event due to the unbelievably high levels of youth crime in the area. Any money saved by using this alternative venue would have to be spent on policing it. They hire gurkhas as security guards down at the waterfront as they are the only ones that aren't afraid of the kids down there.

#35 - Funfairs used to be a yearly occurence down Gypsy Brae in Granton. Why they stopped i don't know.

As for the funfair at The Meadows - this has been located there for at least 30 yrs. I can remember going as a kid when i was 12 -13. So I don't see why this should be stopped because some local community group with members who probably haven't lived in that area anywhere near that length of time want to claim the Meadows as there own!

#37,

And your evidence that members of the group probably don't even live in the area is...?

The question I would really like answered is how much these events pay the council to stage their shows? In fact do they pay the council anything other than a bond to pay for damage to the grass?

Jayess,

The News is notorious for it's inaccuracies and lack of research, and yet so many of us lap it up as given.
All Friends of The Meadows and other protective lovers of parks are saying is; that if the city can't afford enough of the huge sums these events are supposedly bringing into our city's resources. - Enough at least to put the park back as it was before its use by 'whomever', then obviously it is going to die a little more each year, as the Friends are witnessing on our behalf.

It is obvious if any event leaves a park, having caused damage to soil, trees or turf, which cannot be restored before the end of that growing season, then that use is unsustainable in the long term. A bit more degredation each year, means that there is a bit less of that park available to citizens who don't have their own gardens. People who like to take a walk on grass, play games with their kids or their pals, have a game of golf on the world's only free public course, or just take a break from the typical noise and smells of the city.

(Note: I have lived here 45 years and been visiting family and playing here for at least 25 years more than that, when it had clothes drying greens, a boating/paddling pool, a band-stand for school orchestras and choirs, decent supervised pavilions for football and cricket, bowling greens and public toilets. I don't remember any funfairs there, if you liked your fun expensive, noisy, smelly and squalid, you went to Portobello.)
