Published Date: 28 August 2008
EDINBURGH has been named as the most miserable place to live in the United Kingdom – despite its beautiful scenery, countless leisure and cultural attractions and recent economic success.
In a new study by university researchers, the Capital occupies bottom spot out of 273 locations across the country.

Each place was ranked by the level of happiness enjoyed by their residents.

Nearby West Lothian came third highest for happine
ss, while Edinburgh was also outdone by Glasgow, which came in at 111th place.

Academics from Sheffield and Manchester universities came up with the misery index as part of their attempts to find the underlying causes of happiness.

Factors such as age income, health and physical surroundings were taken into account as part of the study.

This latest research contradicts a survey by leading polling agency Mori in 2006 which found only three places – Northumberland, the Isle of Man and St Albans in Hertfordshire – with happier residents than Edinburgh.

Dimitris Ballas, of the University of Sheffield, was reported as saying: "We have tried to determine to what extent place matters.

"Happiness is particularly difficult for a scientist to measure. There's a lot of lively debate on what is the most appropriate measure."

He added: "This is the first time, in Britain at least, that there has been an attempt to take geography into account.

"The difference between areas is very small. A lot of the difference is down to the make-up of the people living there, not just the area."

Commenting on Edinburgh's position, he added: "It means people are less happy than we would expect them to be. Maybe miserable would be the right word."

Researchers based their findings on over 5000 responses from the annual British Household Panel Survey.

Factors including climate hours of sunshine, noise and air pollution were all taken into account in the study – which found that people in the county of Powys in Wales came at the top of the contentment chart.

Councillor Andrew Burns, the city's labour leader, thinks most people in the city would find the research results odd. He said: "This is very surprising. It is certainly not a description of Edinburgh I recognise.

"I am not originally from Edinburgh, I came to the city 15 years ago and I have always found it to be a lively and vibrant place to live and work in. I was at an event for the Mela last night, and what this research is saying does not square with what was going on there."

Back in 2006, the Mori poll findings showed that 96 per cent of people who lived in the centre of the Capital were satisfied that they had everything around them they needed to enjoy life.

The close proximity of a range of top restaurants, bars, shops and galleries, along with magnificent views, walks and parks, clearly outweighed the potential downsides of city centre life, such as possible noise problems, crowded streets and a lack of parking spaces.

Last year, Edinburgh was voted the second best city to visit in the UK by Conde Nast magazine.

Mmm.. Here are some reasons why,

Labour induced congestion
Labour induced Trams
Labour induced Crime
Labour induced Poverty
Labour induced overspend parliament
Labour induced spiralling council taxes
Labour induced unhappiness

Anyone see the common cause? No matter what other party is in power right now, it will take some time to undo all this mess.

"Last year, Edinburgh was voted the second best city to visit in the UK by Conde Nast magazine."

There is a difference between visiting and living somewhere!! Just not sure of the relevance of that statement at the end.

Edinburgh is certainly not a bad place to live but in many ways it is over rated. What we don't hear about is the real Edinburgh. The Edinburgh full of drugs and crime which does not get reported incase it damages the cities so called reputation!!

#2 - Agreed.

I think this just says that Edinburgers have high standards, when it comes to what we expect from life in this city.

Historically at any rate, the quality of life in Edinburgh has been amongst the best in the UK, but that quality has taken a dive over the last year or two (for at least some of the reasons cited in other comments).

We can only hope that things will "bottom out" and improve in a couple of years. Completing the tram line(s) will be the most obvious improvement of roadworks ending, and hopefully the various Water and Gas roadworks that seem to be all over the city will start to die down soon.

LIT, if it ever comes in, might also help, if people feel that their local taxation is fairer too.

I'll keep my rose-tinted spectacles on hope that, if they ask us again in 5 years, things should have got better.

Edinburgh had scenery, it wasn't too busy and there was a decent standard of living.

Now it is all being lost. The Council are destroying the city's scenery, the city is overcrowded and everything is expensive.

The Council didn't cause all of the problems but the its hate of democracy is a primary source of misery.

I agree with (4) - and perhaps that is why Andrew Burns thinks it is a happy place- it is the way he and his left-wing Stalinist control-freaks want it.

Well done, Andra - you have acheived the impossible - taken a thriving happy city "best place to live in Britain" a few years ago and turned it into a pit of despondency.

Still, you have got your trams and as a bonus managed to destroy Edinburgh's good road network, so you can't be accused of doing nothing in Labour's years of office.

I mean how can you be happy in a city that makes rules that you have to park somewhere else if the parking meter is broken??? It is such a negative rule.

But it does sum up the way the powers who control Edinburgh think - uncharitable, negative, poe faced nay sayers!!!

Getting rid of all the totalitarian communists in the council would be a good start for Edinburgh.

Astonishment? You only have to read these columns day after day to hear the dreadful anti-everything attitude of so many Edinburgh misery-guts. There's nothing they love more than to moan on against EVERYTHING.

If they came up with any positive ideas of their own it wouldn't be so bad. But all we hear is complaints complaints complaints. "It's disgusting". "It's shocking." Moan moan moan. It's the local way to sneer at everything whilst praising nothing.

And the Evening News is the biggest culprit of all. How often does this rag commend the Council for any initiative? It always takes the most negative stance it can. No balance. Perhaps this is just to sell newspapers to miserable locals. But it's shocking... disgusting...

Even if this survey was carried out after this week's CIS Cup results, it still doesn't make sense.

That is because part of the Hibs-Hearts rivalry involves that fact that whether you support Hibs or Hearts, you are usually looking for the other one of those two teams to get beat.

Therefore, any doom and gloom which has been enduced by your team going out of the CIS Cup this week will be compensated for by the joy of being able to say "well, at least our local rivals got beat as well".

That in turns means that you are not going to be as unhappy as a result, as you would otherwise have been if it had just been YOUR team getting beat.

We have already had a bunch of "Tories" in power at Westminster for the last 11 years. I couldn't wait to move to Edinburgh from Aberdeen in 1997. I thought Aberdeen was dull, grey and boring. First few months in Edinburgh were great. But the people weren't as friendly and things were way more expensive. I find Edinburgh very snobbish and 'up itself' but the scenery is beautiful. The beauty of the place is not enough to make me happy. I move out of Edinburgh next month to live in a villiage in East Lothian. Can't wait.

We spend so much time 'talking ourselves up' because the reality is that the 'real Edinburgh' as #9 puts it so perfectly, is far far from good.

It is fair to say that Edinburgh folk are not known for their happy and cheerful outlook. I worked there for about 15 years (though I lived in The Borders) and to be honest I would have to say that there is a high percentage of miserable and sanctimonious folk.

As some posters have said Calvinism has something to do with it. There is too much cynicism and a generally nippy attitude.

There is also a kind of myth about Edinburgh being so great and maybe trying to live up to that makes the folk disappointed with things.

I also think Edinburgh people have a strong parochial outlook which generates something like, but not exactly, a kind of siege mentality sometimes. It is not a very cosmoplitan city, especially for a capital city, and certainly less so than Glasgow and many big cities in England.

I also found the anti-Engish anger had a bitter edge too, compared to most other places in Scotland.

Edinburgh rests on its laurels way too much, trading on its architecture, scenery and of course the festival - which many Edinburgh folk feel is a nuisance and dont' embrace.

I know it's de rigeur in Edinburgh to bash the city council but it is true that over at least 20 years there has been a lot of infighting and a real lack of vision and leadership. I think this has really held the city back.

Maybe one of the biggest problems though, like in many other parts of the UK, is the loss of a sense of community. You don't get the feeling in Edinburgh that people look out for one another as much as in other places.

To Edinburgers I'm sorry for this negative post but for me, you are quite a negative bunch and you need to lighten up and cheer up a bit. Your city is fabulous to look at and to visit which should make the job a lot easier.

Having said that, perhaps it would be fairer to hold a poll filled out by visitors and tourists as to how they feel about Auld Reekie. It would stun you I am sure.Rip off Edinburgh.Parking Gestapo of whatever persuasion, council or contracted ones, leave many with an indelible memory of a city of mean spirited avaricious jobsworths. A real boon for the tourist trade in these financially difficult times. It matters not that you had a good time here and there. Those scum spoil everything for so many, relying on folk coughing up the 30quid rather than being blackmailed with the threat of 60quid!Ours was an illegal fine.Do you spend good money on fighting it? The City Of Edinburgh
Not just unfriendly people they are nasty a central population of transient tourist backpacking walkabout hobo’s. A massive tourist trap selling Scottish Historical myths. Multicultural centres, of isolated groups all separated by cultures intrinsic to their race. An indigenous population that are descended from Germans (the only Scottish city with a German name) as is also Sean Connery its famous racist. Because of their sickly Germanic roots Edinburgh people are naturally retarded big boned ugly heifers that traditionally hold on to the belief they are superior. The sight of the pasty faced junkies shuffling up and down Leith Walk is not to be missed. Massive levels of unemployment and every thing here is expensive……it looks nice though lets take a picture.
