MORE than 100,000 jobs in Scotland will be lost during the recession, according to a report to be published this week.
The research, commissioned by Scottish Enterprise, warns that one in every 25 workers in Scotland will be out of a job by the end of the worst recession for a generation.

The document also warns it will take nine years before employment in Scotlan
d returns to its 2008 high of 2.7 million jobs.

The research was conducted before more than 1,000 job losses were announced last weeks at Lloyds Banking Group and Diageo.

The report, drawn up by the country's main economic development agency, says: "The (Scottish] economy is heading into perhaps its sharpest setback period since the war… a return to jobs growth is expected from 2012 onwards, but employment levels are not expected to return to their 2008 peak until at least 2017."

It concludes: "There are forecast to be 106,000 fewer jobs in Scotland in 2011 than in 2008 as a direct result of the recession."

The biggest sector hit will be financial and business services, which will lose 36,600 jobs.

Retail and catering (28,500 jobs lost) and manufacturing (20,600 jobs) will be other big casualties.

The authors say Scotland will fail to match UK growth over the coming decade, meaning the recovery of the jobs market will be slower.

They say: "As the economy gathers pace, we expect economic growth in Scotland to fall once again behind the UK."

This story is picked straight out of the Times.Surely the Scotsman can put it`s own slant on this ? What she has chosen to miss out is that there will be 230,000 unemployed by 2011. As the Times headlines, "The worst of the recession is yet to come, Brown fears " Nice one.

Scotland was heavily dependent on financial services for jobs and the two big Scottish banks went bust. Insurance companies didn't do so well because of the stock market crash and the runaway house building programmes in the Edinburgh area and beyond stopped at this point. It is hardly suroprising thatScotland is goind to suffer a hard bout of unemployment. Thatcher wanted everyone to work for service industries but there is a danger in being less diversified. To cap it all the bailed out banks wouldn't lend to bail out struggling businesses, and tyhey used to accuse the unions of the "I'm alright Jack attitude".

If this is the worst recession for a generation( since 1991 or Thatcher 1980? Which Tory economic "realignment" are we talking about) then it is quite right for "wee eck" and co to try and concentrate on finding new types of employment for those thrown out of work and not just hoping that the bonus crazed elite will put everything "back on track" to where it was before. Market forces are a myth, even Greenspan recognises that. A Chicago boys myth, even when using Pinochet style tactics. They didn't work under him either.

These figures are based on the current economic set up. The SNP will ensure that Scotland gets more economic powers, borrowing powers in particular which will help to create jobs.

But so too will existing SNP policy create jobs. It's already happening in the Alternative Energy Sector which the poor deluded Brit Nat fool (#1) was attacking earlier.

Forget past recessions where Scotland took the brunt while the feeble 50 yawned as they counted their bawbees.

Westminster won't dare treat Scotland badly with the SNP in charge. They'll see what can be done with a Government which cares.
