THE search for a replacement for the director general of the CBI has begun, with a number of head-hunting firms expected to be appointed soon.
The irrepressible Sir Digby Jones, who has been at the helm of the business organisation since January 2000, will leave his post at the end of 2006, after staying on for two more years than is usual. John Sunderland, president of the employers' organisation and chairman of Cadbury, is overseeing the search for a new director general, who will lead the CBI until 2011.
Several agencies have been contacted about how they would approach the task of finding a replacement for Sir Digby, who in recent years has become more critical of Government policies and more outspoken on issues such as education.
The successful candidate is likely to be named in the spring to give them time to prepare for the role, to be taken up on January 1, 2007.
