DRAPED in dowdy clothes, with hair askew and eyebrows like plump caterpillars, it was the contrast between Susan Boyle's unconventional look and her sublime voice that wowed the world.
But now, as stardom beckons, the middle-aged spinster has spun a new style.

In a makeover, the Britain's Got Talent contestant – who has attracted more than 100 million hits on YouTube – has exchanged the matronly flats for striking heels, cast off the cardigan for a trendy black leather jacket and dyed her grey hair chestnut brown.

The eyebrows have been trimmed and tamed with the whole ensemble set off with the addition of a Burberry-style checked scarf.

The 47-year-old's greying hair and plain attire have been the subject of intense debate across the country since her spine-tingling performance of I Dreamed A Dream earlier this month. But yesterday she was spotted outside her home in Blackburn, West Lothian, sporting the striking new look. In an interview earlier this week, Boyle said she was happy with the way she looked, but still felt scarred by taunts she suffered as a youngster because of her unruly hair.

She said: "The ones who were mean to me then are now nice to me. I still see the kids I went to school with because we all live in the same area. They accept me now. And look at me – I've had the last laugh."

When asked if she would change her looks on CNN's Larry King Live, Boyle replied: "Why should I change?"

While online video clips of the unemployed church volunteer's performance on the ITV show wowed fans around the world, there was concern that her new look could jeopardise her following.

Yesterday it was reported that the makeover has caused consternation behind the scenes, with sources on the show said to be "frantic", because they wanted to preserve her unique looks for the live finals.

The contrast between Boyle's unkempt appearance and angelic singing voice is said by many to be the key to her meteoric rise to international fame.

A neighbour said: "The TV folk might not like what she's done. She looks really nice – nothing like the image that's had the whole world talking about her."

But a spokeswoman for Britain's Got Talent said: "Susan is a grown woman and can do what she likes with her hair."

The transformation is thought to have been carried out by local hairdresser Caroline Boyle, 45, no relation, at a cost of £35. There would have been no shortage of alternative offers – yesterday Demi Moore's hairstylist expressed an interest in tackling Boyle's hair.

'IN A YEAR, YOU WON'T RECOGNISE THE OLD SUSAN'

I SUSPECT Simon Cowell and the Britain's Got Talent team have shied away from changing Susan Boyle's image, and she has taken upon herself to do something about it.

The shade of her hair could have been a bit warmer and the cut hasn't changed. Also, she has had far too much of her eyebrows plucked.

If her clothes were that little bit softer, a bit more tailored, it would make a big difference.

Having said that, it is obvious she has become much more aware of her image, and is trying to do something with it.

But I think in a year's time, you won't recognise her as the old Susan Boyle.

J.K.Rowling suffered from some form of depression
(so I hear) but worked with it and went on to write the Harry Potter novels. Not exactly 'high level' literature. I hear you jest...but still a fabulous communicator.
Susan Boyle has had her own life difficulties and has turned out to also be a magnificent communicator.
I wish her every happiness

My believe is that Susan Boyle, will be in the Final, and be not be altered by fame, her voice will remain, as will her roots.

As far as I can see it, Susan Boyle, has no contenders yet, she is the one to Win!

We only have one that up-to-now, might compete with her,and it is certainly not the Boy!, more the likes of the Saxophone Player, I have forgotten his name.

I do like her new hair style, but I hope she realizes people pay good money to have curly hair! I wish mine was natural, it would save me many hours in the morning. My favorite picture of her thus far is the one of her with the red sweater...the girl nextdoor.(and a little Shirley Temple by the piano..so adorable!)

Susan, there is nothing wrong with being ordinary. 99.9999999999999% of us are.

Nothing wrong with a new outfit and a bit of sprucing up!

Winning the talent contest is not important.

If Susan makes a recording she's happy with, then it's sure to be a success story.

ive got a plausible theory she used the ploy of looking pretty lousy it was an eye catcher in its self to be noticed as a non event visually, & then to sing sucked them in needless to say she's got a great voice & if it was a form of P.R.to get noticed it was a definite winner!!
12

RufusT-Firefly,

Waus thats not true.

Everything is relative.

In Scotland, Susan Boyle is an absolute Babe (and that is before the makeover).

If she entered Miss Scotland she would probably win it.

Well that is outfit number one. Pretty good. You may like to select a suede skirt and a well tailored jacket from an Austrian supplier. They used to be superb in the old days. Give it a try, their cashmere jackets were well cut and good value for money.

A fairly good voice was given more praise than it deserved because of her looks - now we'll find out how good it really is - She'll walk away with with Miss blackburn 2009 though1

hey 17# you put it well if she can go on from the P.R. stunt that worked for her so spectacularly well,The idea of winning the local beauty contest on the strengh of her singing ability could be the ultimate challenge in the U.K entertainment world!?

RufusT-Firefly,

i think Susan Boyle has a bright future on Television.

Extreme Makeovers UK could devote a whole series to her.

She could then move on to Ten Years Younger and do a season there.

America has Christina Aguilera.

Wales has Kathryn Jenkins.

Why don't you all stop your whinnin Susan has dedicated her life to looking after her mother and helping in the church when ever she is needed.

Now it is her time to shine she can now consentrate on what she wants to do with her life without complication she sings like and angel that is all she wants to do and now that she has the chance to fulfill her dream let her enjoy it with out being bad mouthed by the jealous few. AS MY MOTHER USED TO SAY IF YOU DONT HAVE SOMETHING NICE TO SAY, DONT SAY ANYTHING AT ALL.

She should be able to change her look as she wants, but I hope she doesn't ever look like a all the Hollywood stars who are loaded up with botox and skin stretched as tight as a three sized too small pair of underwear.

Oh in the name o' the wee man!!!

She's just gone and got her hair done, coloured, had a manicure, pedicure, eyebrows plucked, got a few new clothes ans maybe started a diet.

What woman DOESN'T do that every two weeks!!!

My late mother did into her 60s!

#5. Charles Linskaill does it weekly. (His name was Julian Smith, Chuckles!)

Hardly a major makeover ... and the audience and public be damned ... it's her VOICE that matters in the contest.

Besides, as the love of my life constantly tells me, a woman can change her mind as often as she damn well likes ... and she will ... often!!!

Susan Boyle is just catching up with her gender now!

Can we please have one day without a Susan Boyle article ? Yes, she is brilliant, possibly the greatest singer ever to come out of Scotland. But she is only mortal, and is in danger of being over exposed, before a record is released. Give her a break please !

No matter what Susan does she should know that staying true to herself is the best way to stay sane in all the fury. If SHE wants to change her image she should be able to but then she must also be prepared to accept the consequences for what she does. The only thing I would suggest to Susan is to find a GOOD voice teacher and have her help you get your vibrato under control. If you can learn how to create what's called the 'money note' you'll go Very Very far. Don't rest on your laurels... take what you have and make it better.

Susan you are doing what all women do, after years of being a carer where you were the one behind the scenes you have woken not to what the world can do for you but what you will do for the world showing that beauty is skin deep and the beauty comes from within. thank you for allowing us to share your beauty, just don't let the Simon's and Max cliffords of the ugly side of life sink their claws too deeply into you , Good luck for the Final...

Well said Number 21. Leave her alone; she's damned if she does and damned if she doesn't. She well deserves the glory regarding her gorgeous voice. I don't see why Simon's stupid remarks should make any difference to the talent this lady has.
God Bless, Susan.

38 Ella Fitzgerald wasn't exactly a babe neither was Billie Holliday. Most opera singers would not make page 3 models. Your sexist comment betrays your stupidity on this issue. The lady isn't auditioning to be a dumb-ass celebrity. She wants to be a singer - she qualifies.

One of the best British singers I think we ever had was Alison Moyet. Her voice could sing blues, jazz. soul, anything. It could make the hairs on the back of your neck stand up. She has been superceded by a bunch of dummies that wouldn't know good singing if it kicked them in the teeth, with a few honourable exceptions. Women can sing and they don't need to be glamorous to do it. Let's get back to that way of thinking. All this glamorous dolls stuff is manufactured they canny sing.

Looks like you've found your perfect level, taking the pizz out of the neverwis/unlikely to become/flash in the pan/no as ugly as at first thought/after a couple of cans/5 minutes of fame sensation that is Ms S. Boyle.

Coconut shy would surely've been more of a challenge.

Susan Boyle's curly hair is beautiful. I did not think it unruly. I did not see anything wrong with what you she wore at her audition. I see all these singers and movie stars wear worse and they are half the age. And talk about the singer's and movie star's hair, good grief, these so-called lovely young stars look horrible. But quite frankly who really cares what they wear -- except for some teenagers or someone in the fashion industry trying to sell their wares. Some of the worse dressed women (models) strut their stuff down some runway at some hyped-up fashion show. Susan Boyle's dress was lovely. She had soft curls. There are a lot of us with our stringy straight hair that would love to have those curls. The depression era had their Star -- and she had curly hair -- Shirley Temple. Now, we have our Star -- the Depression of 2009 and on -- Susan Boyle and she has curly hair. Susan Boyle is our new lovely star.

isn't it sad that the whole premise of her success is founded on the sensationalism of the perceived discrepancy between her voice and her looks- lets just botox and spray tan everyone before they even get on the telly and give them porcelain tooth implants and eventually everyone on tv will look fake and plastic and we will find it much harder to judge their 'talent' when they all look equally unreal.
