ONE of the best-loved comedians in the United States is fighting to save his career after an astonishing on-stage outburst in which he launched a tirade of racial abuse at two black hecklers.
Michael Richards, who played Kramer in the long-running sitcom Seinfeld, repeatedly screamed the word "nigger" at the two men during a stand-up routine at the Laugh Factory comedy club in Hollywood.

The outburst was caught on home video, posted o
n the internet and watched by millions, prompting a hand-wringing apology from the subdued Emmy-winning actor in an appearance on David Letterman's nationally televised late-night chat show.

"I got heckled, I took it badly, I went into a rage and said some pretty nasty things to some African-Americans, some trash talk," said Richards, 57. "I'm really busted up over this and I'm very, very sorry to those people in the audience, the blacks, the Hispanics, everyone who took the brunt of that anger and hate and rage and how it came through. I'm not a racist, that's what's so insane about this."

The incident has parallels in film star Mel Gibson's anti- Jewish rant against police officers in July, when he was being arrested for drink driving. As Gibson found with his subsequent alienation, the American public does not easily forgive Hollywood performers who deliver racial insults.

"I think it's a career ruiner for him," said Michael Levine, a veteran publicist who has worked with a number of leading American comedians. "It's going to be a long road back for him, if at all."

Richards appeared distracted and confused as he made his apology on the Letterman show. His appearance came at the request of comedian Jerry Seinfeld, who was on the show to promote this week's launch on DVD of the seventh season of Seinfeld, which ran from 1989 to 1998.

"For me to be in a comedy club and flip out and say this crap, I'm deeply, deeply sorry," Richards said. "I'm hearing your audience laugh and I'm not even sure if this is where I should be addressing the situation," he added as some in the Letterman studio, clearly unprepared for the sobriety of the apology, began to chuckle.

Seinfeld, who said he was "sick" over his former colleague's outburst, snapped at the audience to be quiet.

During his comedy club act, Richards was interrupted by the hecklers and immediately turned on them. "Fifty years ago we'd have you upside down with a f****** fork up your a**," he shouted in an apparent reference to segregation-era lynchings of blacks in the US.

One person yelled, "That was uncalled for" and another accused him of being a wash-up, with no career once Seinfeld finished.

"Freedom of speech has its limitations and I think Michael Richards found those limitations," said Paul Rodriguez, a comedian who performed at the club on the same night.

Ray Hanania, a Palestinian-born stand-up comedian and newspaper columnist agreed. "Richards was wrong to use the 'N' word, but I don't believe he did it because he is a racist. I think he did it because it is in the character of his Seinfeld act to be 'crazy' not just in actions but in deeds," he said.

I don't buy the apology of Michael Richards or Mel Gibson. If a person doesn't hold racist or anti-semitic beliefs, it simply won't come out when inhibitions are no longer held in check during a rage, while drunk, or during a drunken rage. Just because one does not espouse racist or anti-semitic attitudes in public, does not mean they don't hold such beliefs. These two recent examples of high profile celebrities getting caught exposing their true nature, is a perfect example of just how pervasive racism and anti-semitism is in society, regardless of which side of "the pond" you're on.

All Michael has to do is say that the hecklers were having at go at him for being white or jewish or both. Racism is a 2 way street and all the whites have to do is whinge like the other groups.

Other than Seinfeld, what has Michael Richards done successfully in show business. He was in a bad series before Seinfeld (Fridays), a bad series after Seinfeld, (i forget the name of it, but i think it only lasted a few episodes). I've seen him in a couple movies which were pretty bad. I've never seen him do standup comedy on tv or appear on a talk show being funny. I think he was out of his depth. Outside of his scripted character on Seinfeld, he's probably not a natural comedian, and the audience at that comedy club thought he was unfunny, they heckled him, and he flipped out. He should have just retired with the millions he made off Seinfeld instead of thinking he could have a career as a standup comic which obviously he sucks at.

Any form of racism is wrong and the word n***** should only be used by black people against themselves, like only gays can get away with calling each other "pooves" ... Anyone other than that using these words has suspect motives!

Dave,

That doesn't advocate equality Rubbersnap. Amongst themselves it's ok to use derogatroy remarks but not from other groups of people. So one set of people can say one thing but another can't say the same thing. Shaww, nonsense buddy. It's time the balcks, pooves and all and sundry started realising what equality is all about.

Trust the reactionary whitesettler Dave from na h-Eileanan Siar to defend racism. Were you there? If the hecklers were being racist then condemn them as well but there's no info that they were.

Why do some people feel the need to resort to this kind of humour/abuse to make themselves feel good? If you've got problems then go to a shrink.

I never heard what he said,so I cant comment...But I cant help feel that people are unecessarily victimised and accused of being racist far to easily..

Mind the Ron Atkinson debarcle, that was a shame what happened to him, an absolute disgrace and an appaling reaction from the TV stations and the corporate world in general

I've heard ten times worse strolling down Lothian road after a rip in Scrubway Westend. Seinfeld was rubbish anyway, lets just leave those 'crazy' Americans to themselves I say!
Also...Rubbersnap...what in the hay is a 'Poove'. Quality.

Is anyone in real life really "sick" when they hear common racial or ethnic slurs uttered?

Race is the big public hypocrisy of our time. When we're not pretending it doesn't exist, we're supposed to be wallowing in white guilt.

Chuckster,

I've heard ten times worse than Richard's tirade on def comedy jam and out of Chris Rock's mouth. Funny how it's not racist if it's coming out of a black person's mouth. I don't condone it on either side, but only criticizing this guy is pretty hypocritical.

It is hardly ever racism, it is usually cultural indifference.

Of the two races the blacks are the less accomplished in terms of modern technology, science and human advancement. Almost every innovation known to man was created by European faculty of mind and as a result the blacks are left with no contribution whatsoever.

That in itself must be a difficult pill to swallow. You know that you are part of a race which has contributed nothing to the modern world and part of a continent which had not even domesticated the horse as a mode of transport by the year 1820.

It is therefore understandable that blacks are more sensitive than whites when it comes to racial tension.

But regardless that the white race is more affluent not to mention advanced, it does not entitle us to act in a condescending manner. Our systems were enforced on Africa, they did not invite us to share them, we used our power to control them and as a result Africa now struggles to cope with the inherited European systems of governance we left her.

Had we decided to learn the African way,as opposed to enforcing our belief systems and concepts of governance on them, the world may be a better place today.

Who cares, a seriously unfunny second rate actor,
showing his true colours because he failed at acting the part of a real stand up comic. It's another non news filler and a diversion from the real issues of the day.

Nigger, Jew, wop, Raghead, to name a few are just words. These words were invented by Man to put a name on groups of people. They discribe stereotypes and are'nt always derogatory.
I am a Wop. I have Jew friends, Raghead friends, Fag friends, but my black friends I don't call niggers. Some words have a deeper historical meaning. In America, Africans were slaves not too long ago, and Nigger was the word used by the slave masters. All this is a bad choice of words.
Stupid Black Bastard is more P.C., unless you are a African American, in that case you can use any word you want. Part of the stereotype of being a nigger is using terrible language.
Poverty and lack of opportunity are forms of slavery, and calling a African American a nigger, might remind him of his real place in society. Maybe thats why most Blacks in this country are racist, and live up to the stereotype.

The term "poofter" (not "poove") is fairly common parlance and is used by gay and non-gay alike. It is intended to be offensive to the recipient. As the judge in the recent Ken Livingstone case noted, freedom of expression is not limited to polite observations.

And besides, the "hecklers" missed a great opportunity to heckle back - as a 33-rite Scottish Freemason, 500 hundreds year ago the Spanish Inquisition would have had him upside down with a fork in his bottom.

Regarding media 1's comment.... I truly do not like wasting my energy or intellect on what is clearly an intellectual midget. Ok, let us assume that you do have some form of formal education since you put a few sentences together regarding Michael Richard’s racist tirade. This elevates you from being merely ignorant to being STUPID, so congratulations! I refuse to believe that you are truly unaware of all the contributions made by Black people. How you made a segway from Michael Richards comment (which he should rightly be ashamed of) to your own personal tirade on all people of African decent and their contributions or lack thereof to society at large is truly incredible. I’m going to cut this short, because I would really need to send you some sort of bill. I grow tired of these “teachable moments”.

My free advice to you; read a book…another one. This is the year 2006, knowledge is readily available for those who rightly seek it. There is no excuse for this. Just because something wasn’t in YOUR history book, this doesn’t mean it did not exist, and likewise, just because something WAS in your history books, this mere coincidence does not make it a fact. Michael Richards has to deal with his own demons, but I do believe he will recover, you and people like you, I am more concerned about. This arrogance betrays your stupidity. I suppose you actually believe Columbus “discovered” America don’t you? And to put the icing on the cake, you are from Cape Town. I would hope this was a different Capetown, and not the one in South Africa no less, because that would truly be “rich”, and it would really take the sport out of my good fun.

Hiram: I see you have taken offence to my comments surrounding the continent of Africa. Perhaps then you could enlighten me as to why I should see it differently.

You were quick to accuse me of a tirade, but shifty enough to forget that I lay some blame on the white man for the current state of Africa.

I am not from Africa, but I have resided in 12 of her countries. Funnily enough, the only which can compete with most first world nations in terms of infrastructure is the one which I currently reside within. And we all know why that is.

I did not intend for this to be a debate which focussed on the achievments of the two races, but since you seem to have access to information which the rest of the world has been starved of, I would be obliged if you would share it with us.

Perhaps you could reveal to us the inventors of the rudder, the oar, the boat, the bicycle, the aeroplane, the helicopter, electricity, the telephone, the radio, the battery, the telescope, the microscope, quantum physics(the science of possibility) who was it that discovered atoms, molecules, quarks and landed a man on the moon, who invented the guitar, the piano, the violin, who circumnavigated the Earth first and had a good understanding of magnetism. Where was Socrates from?Plato,Archimedes,Descartes,Marx,Kreigeard,Nietsche,Da vinci,Michaelangelo etc

Perhaps you could enlighten us and permit us the wonderful opportunity to explore your magnificent mind..

Clearly you know things that the rest of the planet dont.

22

Angry American,

U.S.A. 22/11/2006 18:45:32

Hiram, you're spot on about Columbus not discovering America. Those of us in know over here credit the bison with that designation. In fact, the bison were somewhat closer to developing a written language and complex systems of abstract thought than were the aboriginals who decimated them.

23

J.O.,

You know, the use of n****r (I can't even bring myself to type it) I could forgive as the hecklers were shouting out "cracker" and "white boy". I notice that many news reports including this one neglect to mention that. That's just dishing it back out, and has been mentioned in previous comments plenty of black comedians use that word over and over in their routines.

The part I have a harder time getting over is the lynching reference. That was uncalled for, and appears to be genuinely racist.

24

Bien E. Bien,

22/11/2006 22:15:22

I had not heard the term "cracker" in the pejorative form before; that is a new one to me.

As for the "n-word" - let's just use the word "nigger" in this context since we are discussing an event which is already in the public domain.

25

Doreen,

The Cyber Shebeen 22/11/2006 22:22:19

Some black people call each other 'n*****r as do some gays p**f but this is a gesture of defiance rather than an insult to each other. You do not hear white or straight people insulting each other why?......because whites and heteros are in the majority and historically have not been on the receiving end of prejudice as a minority. If you are white you most certainly do not have the right, nor if you are straight to use these terms as it would undoubtedly be used as an insult. Not all black people find this situation acceptable....calling each other n*****r.

As far as the achievements of black people are concerned.....perhaps if they had not been forced to be the white man's slave, but been given an education and accepted into white society things would have been very different. However if you go onto google you will find there are plenty black inventors, just as there are other black people of note throughout history....actors, singers, artists, athletes, civil rights activists and campaigners....the list goes on.

26

chomski reader,

Many writers & talk show hosts have been mentioning the Mel Gibson tirade in connection with Michael Richards' racial rage against the blacks who were heckling him. It seems like a tactic to divert attention from one of their own and focus attention on "anti-semetic beliefs" and "anti-semitism" (a meaningless term since no "semitism" exitst that one can be against). Why is it that when blacks are the victims of racial slurs by a prominent Jew, we need to be reminded about how there are others who are still "against the Jews"?

White the opposite is black, negro the opposite is caucasian, N****r is a slang word of Negro and what is the "slangword of caucasian"?, can we say caucar? What about if he is from "Nigeria"? Is anybody can solve this problem? or just remove or delete that word from the Dictionary?. Do you think it will erase from our brain?
