BARACK OBAMA and Hillary Clinton have traded accusations after a photograph of Mr Obama dressed as a Somali elder was put on the internet.
His camp said the picture was circulated by Mrs Clinton's team as a smear. The Clinton campaign said it had not sanctioned the photo's release, but that with 700 staffers it could not be known whether someone had sent it out unofficially.
The picture, sent to the Drudge Report website, shows Mr Obama wearing traditional African dress during a visit to Kenya in 2006.
The Democratic front-runner has fought a whispering campaign from fringe elements that say erroneously he is a Muslim.
The two rivals are campaigning for two crucial primaries next week in Texas and Ohio.
After losing 11 straight contests to Mr Obama, Mrs Clinton needs big wins in both states to salvage her bid to be the Democratic nominee.
"I think Americans are saddened when they see these kind of politics," Mr Obama said.
