CITY Labour MP Mark Lazarowicz has come under fire from Liberal Democrats for supporting the UK Government's plans for post office closures.
The Edinburgh North and Leith MP helped defeat a Tory motion in the House of Commons earlier this week seeking to block the closure of 2500 branches across the UK. The Government majority was cut to just 20 when 19 Labour MPs rebelled.

Proposals for closures in Scotland will not be published until August.

Kevin Lang, the Lib Dems' candidate for Edinburgh North and Leith, said: "Local people will be astonished to know their MP voted loyally with the Government to press ahead with a massive post office closure programme."

Mr Lazarowicz said although the constituency had seen some post offices close, new ones had also opened.

He said: "The Lib Dems' apparent suggestion that all post offices should remain open for all time even when there are big losses is clearly unrealistic.

"What they should be doing is making sure the post office network is profitable and has a sound future."

So what if they're not profitable: They're an essential community facility.
Just think how much money has been wasted on the war in Iraq by this cesspit of a Labour government. Keeping the post offices open would have cost buttons compared to their foreign policy disaster.... Can't wait to see Callum Cashley give Lazarowicz a right royal drubbing at the next election... maybe he ought to start thinking about local issues instead of toadying up to this outgoing shower.

Callum who?

Good luck to Kevin Lang, the real challenger in Edinburgh North & Leith. Labour has taken the votes of the people of that constituency for granted for far too long, and the SNP has hardly endeared itself to capital voters with their anti Edinburgh stance on public transport, jobs relocation etc.

Not one ' Scottish ' Labour M.P. voted against the Post Office closures. Time for Scotland to vote for Labours closure.

Faustas, remind me what planet you're on.... The SNP have stopped the old Lib/Lab tactic of dispersing Edinburgh's public sector jobs - which was just a crude attempt at buying jobs across Scotland. And it cost us millions.

But yes, Labour have indeed taken their votes for granted for too long.

..oops typo... that should have been "a crude attempt at buying VOTES across Scotland"...

I think spending hundreds of millions every year on keeping loss making post offices open just because they are seen as some sort of 'social centre' is daft.

See Labour hypocrites at their very best. Dolling out the union dividend to the plebs while they sook up the gravy on their John Lewis list and fat pensions.
