HOUSING associations today warned of hefty rent rises following a cut in the Scottish Government’s overall funding for affordable homes.
Edinburgh will receive £36.1m this financial year – the same as last year – to build an estimated 600 affordable houses. But the allocation has been branded a real-terms cut.
Ministers have told housing associations the current subsidy level of £77,000 per house is “unsustainable”.
Edinburgh North & Leith Labour MSP Malcolm Chisholm, left, said: “It is deeply disappointing there has been a real-terms cut in the money for this year.
“The subsidy per house is significantly down, which means big rent rises in the pipeline.”
