WESTMINSTER'S sleaze watchdog today confirmed he has launched an inquiry into Livingston MP Jim Devine over his expenses.
A spokeswoman for parliamentary standards commissioner John Lyon said an official complaint had been received and accepted for investigation.

Hospital campaigners in West Lothian said they planned to take the case a step further by making a complaint to the Metropolitan Police.

The MP – who has been banned by Labour bosses from standing for the party again – is under pressure over claims totalling £4,483 for rewiring his London flat and shelving work carried out by the landlord of his local pub.

The rewiring claim was supported by a receipt bearing a bogus VAT number and the name of a company which did not exist.

There have also been repeated questions about where the 66 metres of shelves really are.

The spokeswoman for Mr Lyon said: "The commissioner is currently looking into a complaint about Mr Devine."

Meanwhile, the Action to Save St John's group will make an official complaint about Mr Devine to the Met on Monday.

The MP said ten days ago he was going to call in the police himself in a bid to clear his name.

Gordon Buerskens, one of three Action to Save St John's councillors on West Lothian Council, said: "He seemed enthusiastic about having the police brought in, so in case it slipped his mind we thought we would help it along. Our concern is that, in terms of the shelving in particular, there has not been any continuity in the answers he has given.

"The £2,326 claim for shelving was made from Mr Devine's constituency office budget, but no shelving was in evidence at the premises.

He told the Evening News that Tony Moran, the landlord of his local pub had travelled to London to put the shelves up in his flat there. But he is said to have told his constituency party the shelves were installed in the cellar of a former Blackburn pub run by Mr Moran.

Councillor Buerskens added: "We believe there is sufficient evidence to suggest the possibility of fraud and that should be investigated."

Today it was reported Scotland Yard is launching a full inquiry into claims made by several MPs and peers for non-existent mortgages. The news comes as further revelations were made that MPs have also claimed for unpaid council tax on their expenses.

What do you think of the way MPs have handled the expenses affair?

David McNeil, 59, health service worker, St Leonard's: "It's an absolute disgrace, the whole lot of it."

Gill Williamson, 40, marketing manager, Newington: "I don't think they really wanted to handle it. I think if they hadn't been exposed we'd be none the wiser about it."

Jim Taylor, 56, taxi driver, Gilmerton: "I think it's reprehensible what they've done. Rather than just hold their hands up, they've done everything possible to be devious."

If, for some reason, this criminal is NOT charged with making fraudulant claims, then we should all do the same. Lets face it, If its good enough for them...............

The important matter at hand is to remember that Devine and labour cannot hide from the electorate by allowing these deselected politicians to continue to be paid from the public purse they abused in the first instance, the situation that has made their position untenable with their own parties!

If they don't have the support of their OWN parties, then how can the electorate be expected to hang around before pronouncing OUR judgement upon them in a by lection or any election?

I am less interested in what criminal charges are brought against these people, (goodbye and good riddance will suffice) rather than them being replaced with politicians who represent the Scottish interest.

This is clearly a case of fraud, and hopefully the police, either Lothian and Borders or the Met, depending on where the claim was made should investigate. I just wanted to mention Gordon Brown's article in the Guardian where he says that the last few weeks have been the worst in his political career. I would have thought that sending brave young men to war, whether justified or not would hav ebeen worth. This just sums up the man's character, putting himself first.
PS If he becomes a teacher, lets hope it's not maths or economics.

Strangely, Anne Moffat's expenses appear only in "round " amounts every month - e.g
Mortgage £600, Food £400, Utilities £100, Rates £100, Cleaning £100, Service/Maintenance £100 - unlike mere mortals who find their "real world" bills vary and even include odd pounds and pennies! She also claimed "Petty Cash" of £250 each and every month. The
questions over her claim of £2000 per quarter for rent on a shared (with Ian Gray) constituency office in Tranent are as far as I'm aware still to be adequately answered.
Not to worry though - she must be confident of coming out of all of this "whiter than white" as she managed to purchase two washing machines - one in May 2007 and another in February 2008.

Devine claimed £4000 on expenses for furniture and fittings left in the flat he bought from Michael Connarty MP.
He paid this sum to his friend Connarty.
What has happened to the £4000??
I am sure Michael would give this back to the taxpayer since we furnished it originally!!!!!
Yes and MP pigs can fly.
Ps why was furniture for Connarty's new flat in London purchased and delivered to addresses in Scotland?????
I suspect friends are about to fall out.

Scotland Yard is launching full criminal investigations into the expenses claims of some MPs and peers, as yet more revelations emerge over dubious payments.
yes even the fib dems are at it,receiving £2.4 million from a donor later convicted of fraud,The donation - the largest in the party's history - was given by businessman Michael Brown through his company 5th Avenue Partners before the 2005 General Election campaign.

Brown skipped bail while awaiting a fraud trial last year and was sentenced to seven years in jail after being tried in his absence.

they will bleat we dint know, but its all gone, spent on daft groups like tree huggers are us,and other hairy jumper projects
well that puts them up behind labour

#2 hes a bald faced crook,as UNISON told labour in their 1998 report that PFI was bent

Since the referendum, UNISON has constantly had to defend local services. Attempts to hive off services to the private sector, create arms length trusts, and discredit local service delivery, together with massive budget cuts, have meant we have had to fight for our very existence.

PFI: And one of the biggest cons is the Private Finance Initiative. The idea of new schools or hospitals is tempting until you realise the cost is far higher than public investment, the private companies end up owning the assets, other services are cut to pay for the private profits and our children end up paying through the nose for tens of years.

The branch has tried to expose the PFI illusion through newspaper articles, talks to Labour Party branches and seminars.

I remember back in the late 1980's when I was the COHSE secretary at a hospital in Edinburgh, I could never get a hold of JD who was our regional rep because even back then he had dellusions of grandeur and was too busy sucking up the late great Robin Cook's butt to be bothered about the ordinary union members who paid his wage.

He's a loser and was alway at the fraud lark when it came to party funds.

Looks like Devine retribution! At last, yes it has to be the Bar L for Devine.
Will the DPP please put this “poor soul” out of his misery so that we can have at least a bye-election in this constituency.

Forget Westminster's mess for a sec and take a closer look at Oslo's new Opera House, as advertised on this page. Worth Googling it.

This is Norway's biggest cultural project in 700 years. Now where do you suppose tiny Norway got the money to build something that would grace the shores of Dubai, New York, London or Tokyo?

Think of all the modern buildings built in Scotland since Oil, including Holyrood. None of them compare, but then we don't have Oil and Gas revenues.....London does.

And Scotland's British Nationalists are determined that it stays that way while the Scottish Nationalists are determined that the money should stay in Scotland.

Which group do you support?
