It takes all sorts to make up a democracy, so one must do one's best to make allowances. That said, I find it hard to agree with Paul Henderson Scott's one-sided approach (Letters, 17 September).
Unless I am much mistaken, it was the English throne that was usurped by the Scottish royal family back in the 18th century. Notwithstanding the overwhelming democratic deficit between the two nations, it is Scotland that has a disproportionate number of MPs when compared with England – or even with England, Northern Ireland and Wales. If democracy is, indeed, a system in which the will of the majority is deemed to prevail, it does not appear to have made much progress in the UK. Perhaps it is time to give it a chance? I'll wager good money I could name at least one of the most vocal opponents of such a change were it to be mooted.
