A SPORTSMEN'S dinner hosted by Mike Tyson, the former world heavyweight champion boxer and convicted rapist, has been cancelled due to the level of public outrage, organisers confirmed last night.
The £250-per-head "Audience with Mike Tyson" was planned for Saturday at the Hilton Hotel in Glasgow, but had attracted widespread condemnation from wom-en's groups and campaigners.

Barry Hughes, of Braveheart Promotions, said the event was being
cancelled "due to the level of negative feedback from public, media and political sources".

He added: "Although Mike Tyson is one of the greatest former world champion boxers of all time, the furore that has surrounded this troubled athlete's personal life continues to overshadow his professional accolades.

"Braveheart Promotions does not wish to cause distress to any individuals or groups in holding an event which is seen to glorify unfavourable behaviour."

Full refunds will be given for the 800 tickets organisers were expecting to sell.

Tyson, who began his six-city UK tour in Manchester last week, was jailed for six years in 1991 for raping beauty queen Desiree Washington and has a history of violence towards women.

Last night, a spokeswoman for Scottish Women's Aid said: "We are absolutely delighted the promoters have taken cognisance of the protests and reversed their decision to invite Tyson to speak at this event. They have recognised they were giving out the wrong message about violence against women."

In 2000, the Glasgow-based Rape Crisis Centre was taken to the brink of bankruptcy in a failed legal bid to stop Tyson getting a visa for his visit to Glasgow and his fight against Lou Savarese at Hampden Park.

I'd still like to know why the government allows convicted American criminals into this country in the first place. Anyone here with a criminal conviction is not allowed into America.

Is Maggie Broon such a fawning toady that he cannot stand up to the Americans, and give them equal treatment?

Guga and his lies again he just wont stop lying. But then he never goes out needs to stay near his P.C to post his drivel.

Plenty of people with convictions are allowed into the U.S.A every day..it just depends what the conviction was for.

#2. Incidentally, do you think the septics would allow in someone from this country that was a convicted rapist and thug? Do you think they should be allowed in to this country. Ask your mother, as I know the questions are beyond your mental capacity.

#2, You are terrifically wrong. Criminals with known convictions are NOT allowed to enter this country legally. They get in ILLegally sure enough. But it is a law. And I am sooooo happy to hear that Scotland did not want Mike Tyson around their women. Good job!

You cannot enter the USA if you have been convicted of a serious or drug related offence, this tends to be anything over 2 years in jail, but as Amy Winehouse discovered any drug offence normally results in the refusal of a visa. An assault conviction which only warranted a fine wouldn't be classed as serious. I do believe that waivers can be granted by the US immigration service.

At last, good sense prevails. Who on earth would want to go to a dinner hosted by and talked to by a convicted rapist anyway? The man was always a thug. Even in the ring!

No one is more UNsportsman-like than Mike Tyson. Why celebrate anyone who bites off ears and rapes women?

I cannot imagine what a speech from him would sound like. It is my impression that his vocabulary is quite limited to four letter words and grunts.

Mike Tyson has little to do with sportsmanship and is a convicted felon with a history of violence towards women. I would not open the back door to see this man or to hear him speak and I question the mentality of anyone who would pay two hundred and fifty pounds to go to the Hilton to do so.

Nevertheless, I also would not deny the man his right to speak, in public or in private, lest someone find a reason to deny me that right in future.

All concerned with this - the promoters for backing down and the women's groups for denying a person freedom of trade and of speech - ought to be ashamed of themselves.

Tyson has the right to free speech, just as we all have, however, I must add that Scotland also has the right to refuse to PAY to hear him speak, and they have. So....I commend you Scotland. Just because a rapist spends time in the slammer does not a Boy Scout make! He still is engrained with the "Power" thing. Rape isn't about sex, it is a power play. And his attitude towards women has been bad for the record.
