Published Date: 11 May 2009
LOTHIAN Buses is on a collision course with city leaders over plans for a permanent ban on traffic in Princes Street.
Council chiefs have launched a feasibility study into pedestrianising the busy shopping street following the success of traffic diversions brought in for the tram works.

The council-owned Lothian Buses today made it clear that it saw Princes Street's long-term future as a major public transport route through the city centre.

It is understood the cash-strapped bus company is worried about its revenue being hit long-term if buses cannot access the city's busiest street.

In a response to a council consultation over the redevelopment of Princes Street, the firm said

: "Princes Street should remain a major public transport spine, and when making the city centre as pedestrian friendly as possible, public transport's ability to provide a full service is not impaired."

The pedestrianisation proposal has won favour from a number of city centre traders.

It is likely that any pedestrianisation plans would copy the format currently used for the tram works, with buses and taxis diverted along George Street.

However, a compromise solution which would see buses spread between Princes Street, George Street and Queen Street will also be considered.

Traders and motoring groups today said the plans needed further consideration.

Rob Winter, of the Princes Street Traders' Association, said: "There are a number of positives to taking traffic off Princes Street, improving the shopping experience by removing the four lanes of traffic might be one.

"The diversions seem to be working well, but it is hard to really tell if sales for shops on Princes Street are down because the buses are not there, the economic downturn or because they have a building site on their doorstep.

"The one thing we know is that we now have a great opportunity to debate the future of Princes Street."

Councillor Phil Wheeler, the city's transport leader, said: "I have asked the head of transport to prepare a feasibility study into access to Princes Street by other forms of transport once the tram comes into service and the views of Lothian Buses will of course we taken into account."

Last week the Evening News revealed that Princes Street would remain closed to traffic during this year's festival season as part of a bid to catch up on delayed tram works and have the street open in time for Christmas.

It is anticipated that buses will return to Princes Street when work is finished, although the pedestrianisation plans may stop this.

Neil Greig, spokesman for the Institute of Advanced Motorists, said: "I think there have been concerns about Princes Street in the past that is was being turned into a glorified bus station.

"However, you obviously need public transport that takes people where they want to go."

Shuttle shuffles off as airport service closes
BUS bosses have wound down an airport shuttle service after failing to find a buyer for the venture.

Edinburgh Shuttle, which had been operated by Lothian Buses since December 2006, was put up for sale in February, but has now ceased trading.

Lothian Buses said it wanted to focus on its "core business."

Iain Coupar, the firm's marketing manager, said: "There were a few notes of interest, but nothing came to fruition so the service stopped operating.

"One or two parties are still interested, but that's over to them.

"The current climate has got something to do with it and we were aware that the performance at the airport was in question."

All bookings transferred to an airport-based taxi firm.

So much for integrated transport. Surely the idea is to link the bus services and the tram and therefore they have to run along side one another.

Or do the muppets in the Council think that bus users do not matter any more? It has been suggested here before and it makes far more sense to pedestrianise George Street.

Joking aside, at this early stage and during the feasibilty study, may I suggest that the 'cycling lobby' make a strong case for a 'cycles only lane' on Princes Street?

That would keep them out of the way of pedestrians and trams and would be a major contribtion to the health and safety of all all concerned.

Surely the compromise of pedestrianising George Street and channeling all vehicular traffic along Princes Street and Queen Street is the answer? At the moment, far too many bus routes use Princes Street. If they could be divided up in a sensible fashion (I know, it's Edinburgh we're talking about here....) then both Princes Street and Queen Street should be able to handle it.

Each item that is not carried, such as a buggy, needs to be paid for.
Old people not allowed out their house after 10.00am that way we young people do not have to stand behing old folk while they dither and keep asking "How much?".
Sundays they could be allowed out until 7pm.

Pedestrians are given very little priority in Edinburgh city centre at present:

- not enough priority at traffic lights and signallised crossings, and crossing points are too infrequent

- Princes St is littered with choke points where pedestrians are forced onto narrow pavements by the bunkerlike reinforced bus stops, which take up too much room

- Pavements are too narrow

Most people coming to Edinburgh come here to walk at some point, even if they drive or get the bus. Increasing pedestrian facilities will attract more shoppers and provide a better environment.

Lothian Buses should be told where to get off!
25

Bill MacD,

The sheer depth of ignorance of idiots (e.g. 3) who complain about public transport subsidies is almost beautiful in the purity of such stupidity. The level of subsidy that all of us give to car drivers by their use of public space, pollution, health costs, and resource depletion is such that by any sensible accounting standard they should be paying fuel costs measured in the thousands of pounds per gallon. Basic economics. These halfwits who can't see beyond their own narrow horizons are too dim for words. They're going to be in for a bit of a shock once peak oil really starts to bite, as we are passing its inexorable historic tipping point about... oh... nowish. But as they suffer the results, they'll STILL blame everyone else!! :-)

For once I agree with you James. Also old people shouldn't be allowed to do their weekly shop at lunchtimes when workers are trying to buy a sandwich in a hurry and they have £32.00 worth of stuff out the bargain baskets and twenty money off vouchers. Once all the stuff has been put through the till and is piling up on the other side - THEN they decide to look for their purse and count out the money in ones and twos. By that time your lunch hour is over and you haven't got time to eat the bloody sandwich.

Logically they can hardly define/claim Princes Street as 'pedestrianised' if in fact traffic such as trams and cyclists are also using it.

The other class of vehicle which would of course need access would be taxis as they deliver wealthy 'tourists' to the hotels at both ends and along the length of said Princes Street?

By any sensible accounting standard the road user makes a very sizeable positive contribution to the overall tax take.

Removing buses from Princes Street is a terrible idea. Not only will it hurt the bus network, it will hurt the trams, before the first line has ever opened. Princes Street is the logical place to change from buses to trams, and anything that makes that change more difficult is only going to deter passengers.

"In my days, the woman knew her place - in the home - washing, cleaning, baking, and providing food for her husband."

Regarding the washing, cleaning, baking, caring for kids, etc etc, most women still carry out all these traditional tasks in addition often to working in order to keep 'Dipstick Darling', COSLA and other ne'er-do-wells in a job.

GT, what about another Dickensian stride, why don't we get orphans to clean chimnies? Better still, we could lash hundreds of them together to front of trams which they could then tow through 'pedestrianised' areas.

So do they want to increase the use of public transport or not? What they're proposing by taking buses off Princes Street is a two-class public transport system, with bus passengers being relegated to 2nd class.

We all know that too many buses are routed along Princes Street, but presumably the reason for it is the buses get a lot of passengers that way. It's still the main city centre shopping street, and you have to go to Princes Street to get to Waverley Station. If they make it difficult for shoppers or train travellers, that will lead to fewer shoppers and increased car journeys to catch the train.

Since Princes Street has been closed to buses I (and I'm sure a lot of other people) have walked rather than go up to George Street to get a bus - that may be good for my health but it certainly isn't good for increasing public transport usage.

Like you, I have stopped using buses to get to work following the closure of Princes Street. I now use the train, takes all of 6 minutes from Waverley to Edinburrgh Park, trams will not everf be able to match that.

Regarding Pronces Street, I quite like the idea of it being private car free, but honestly, bus services should still be run along this street in conjunction with the trams provided that is that the trams are ever completed.

How far is it to walk from Princes Street to George Street? That is the problem, people are to lazy to walk the length of themselves, bus stops every hundred yards! Keep Princes Street bus free and let everyone enjoys the views without busses thundering past.

The drivers don't give you a chance to sit down before they take off and they seem to forget it takes a distance to stop it at times the speed some of them go.
71

Sarah B,

Here is yet another example of wonderfully "joined up thinking" from the Council.

I can understand the appeal of pedestrianising Princes Street and/or George Street, but really, should this have been decided before assessing Edinburgh's public transport requirements and opting for a tram line?

The further you move bus stops from tram stops, the less public transport can be considered to be integrated and the more difficult it becomes to encourage usage and to operate services effectively or profitably.

There are those who argue that profitability should not be an issue but, unfortunately, until legislation is changed, it is and the pedestrianisation of either street in the current circumstances, would add yet more problems to the heap already facing Lothian Buses.

If any Council officials are reading this - please get your act together in future. Make sure your original plan is coherent and robust and then stick to it.

The views will not bew inhibited by passing bus traffic if tourists walk along the Gardens side of Princes Street, in fact that is the best vantage point for the Castle, Gradens, etc.

Also bear in mind that Scotland does not enjoy the best climate on the planet so that viewing from buses (especially from the top deck) is another reason why bus services should be continued in Princes Street.

#90 Sarah B

Spot on as usual, this trammline was never thought out properly in the first place, I assume it would have been cancelled at a much earlier stage if it had been.

We now have a situation where pretty nearly anything is being bolted on to a rapidly failing concept. The managers and designers of this pathetic 'project' are obviously beginning to panic.

Two depressing things witnessed by me today as a result of poorly planned and executed tramworks fiasco / traffic diversions:

Sad thing #1) Sight-impaired lady with white stick patiently standing at Pedestrian Crossing at Queensferry Street opposite Ryan's Bar. (The same crossing that, even when the Green Man is on, has no traffic light to stop buses/taxis/bikes turning from Princes St / Charlotte Square into Queensferry Street from driving straight through the crossing when Green Man is lit.) Anyway, not only where buses/bikes/taxis driving through crossing while Green Man was on, but also the "Beeps" to tell the blind lady that it was ###supposed### to be safe to cross weren't actually working. So her chances of crossing the road safely, unaided, were zero.

Sad thing #2) Elderly lady in wheelchair with carer, attempting to gain access to Princes St Gardens to enjoy the nice weather. No hope of getting to ramps due to tramworks, so stuck at top of stairs at West End of Princes Street. Lady in wheelchair, quite understandably, didn't want help of strangers to be lifted down massive flight of stairs to allow her to access the gardens, so was faced with either not gaining access to gardens, or else long-distance detour in the hope of gaining access somewhere along King Stables Road.

The Very Angry Nutterpillar

By the light of the Moon, a old fool lay sleeping in his tenement flat. On Sunday morning, the warm Sun came up and pop! Out of bed leapt an opinionated and very angry nutterpillar. He started to look for on-line news items to comment on.

On Monday he gave everyone the benefit of his views on working women's sandwiches, but he was still angry.

On Tuesday he ranted on about pensioners' winter fuel payments, but he was still angry.

On Wednesday he fumed about loose paving stones, but he was still angry.

On Thursday he said that anyone who disagreed with him about public transport was an idiot, but he was still angry.

On Friday he continually hijacked the published topics with his opinions concerning the keeping of dogs in tenements, but he was still angry.

On Saturday he haranged everyone tirelessly about homophobia, flogging, selfish car drivers, double-decker trams, juvenile delinquency, under-age drinking and what fools they were to vote SNP. That night he had a headache!

The next day was Sunday again. The nutterpillar re-read his well-thumbed copy of Justine and felt much better. That night he slept very soundly. In the morning he got up, put on his best Napoleon Bonaparte outfit and stepped out onto Gorgie Road as a Grade One Listed barking-mad nutterfly.

Alice in Embraland (if that is indeed your real name), I salute you!

111 is not Mario.

111 is the person that comes here to make sexually abusive comments to people. He's best ignored (or kicked *hint hint* administrator)

I am led to believe that Jordan is to 'front' Edinburgh's rapidly failing trams 'project', so it's not all bad news.

Thank you for your appreciation. It remains to be seen whether the person who inspired that little homage shares your enthusiasm...

Oh well, another taxing day in the office done. Good bye everyone.

#119 You would like to see him hit by a tram. Apparently he's sitting in his pants at his computer etc, etc

#26 - I don't reply to you - you have had numerous comments removed because they were abusive towards me.

He is an old man after all, but you would appear to get great pleasure from insulting him.

Ok Foo. Shake hands. At least you admit it. Credit where credit is due.

However, any kind of crude remarks on these sites can paint a complete different picture of the poster as we are all anonymous. So some things like the beef comments can get completely taken out of hand.

Anyway, I leave you in peace. nSyratzcGIaw no more.

I saw a guy hit by a tram in Amsterdam once. He'd just wandered out of a coffee shop, with a very, very white face. He fell hard onto the ground, bounced, got up, vaguely waved apologetically in the direction of the tram and went on his way.

Was that you Mario?

#102, Sarah- yep, I'd heard that too. Presumably because they were found out for the talentless, time serving charlatans they really were, and eventually got fed up being shoved sideways to act as glorified office boys. Ah, Keith & Barry - how did it ever come to pass!

#42 Well here is another example of pot calling the kettle. Gorgie Tony says in part to #39 “and you seem to find time to access the internet during the day - a very, very poor excuse indeed - it is more like laziness.

Now Tony regarding your complaint (2 years ago I believe and counting?) about youths picking on you and you contacting the police and waiting on them still to arrive. When did you go to the police station to report it?
What, you never? Two years ago and you cannot find time to go to the police station yet you find time to write drivel? Are you just making that story up so people will feel sorry for you?

But you have time to access the internet during the day - a very, very poor excuse indeed - it is more like laziness.

As a pensioner how come you can afford a computer and internet access? Is this yet another lie that pensioners cannot afford.... XYZ, please give generously as I fought for you!

#53 GT you can get a civil partnership now! Only you are too old and well to be honest the speed you will probably walk at would still be called kerb crawling even if you were just going for a paper!

Turn Princes street into airport - build new houses in that princes street gardens - turn the derilicts and yon auld castle thing on princes street into hi-tech offices and free up the waterfront for fishing boats and countryside and edinburgh west for agricultutral and food production - and to quote Oliver Hardy ‘Now we’re getting someplace’

As a person with mobility problems, I've found the diversions along George Street extremely useful, much needed since they took the buses away from there years ago. I think buses will be a boon along there during the Festival too providing better access to The Assembly Rooms.

Once the trams run along Princes Street, I'd really welcome the permanent return of buses to George Street.

Lothian Bus Group is understandably worried about its income. How many of our very efficient buses will require to be taken off the streets of Edinburgh to accomodate the unwanted and unnecessary trams - all in the interests of improved passanger movement around the city? Expensive 'white elephant scheme' promoted by the subsequently defunct Labour Group. But answer - how many?

Ignoring the completely off topic comments re trams, the main problem I see with total pedestrianisation is connections to Waverley station - connections are already quite poor, so either you make it so that more trains go to Haymarket or existing connections are maintained. It looks like there may be some pragmatism in the council if they are looking to move some but not all buses.

Too much emphasis is placed on getting people into Edinburgh for shopping or as tourists - what about commuters? It'll be great when the tram works are all finished, maybe then we can get back to a reliable bus service. Trams are really only for tourists or for people who live along the tram route itself, no-one else will be interested in them.

Fantastic idea, pedestrianise princes street with two big tram lines running along, trams are known as silent killers, I can see it now, people shopping, thinking no traffic, oops killed by a tram.
