New Business Secretary Peter Mandelson has undergone hospital tests after experiencing kidney pain, it was learned today.
A spokesman for the Minister said he will still attend today's first meeting of the National Economic Council although he will have a kidney stone removed later.

A spokesman for the Business Department said: "Over the past few days, Peter Mandelson has been experiencing some kidney pain.

"Hospital tests yesterday confirmed that there is a small stone. This will be dealt with by the normal procedures later today.

"He will be attending the National Economic Council meeting this morning as expected."

Mr Mandelson showed no obvious signs of pain as he arrived for the NEC meeting, strolling up Downing Street with Treasury Chief Secretary Yvette Cooper shortly before 11am.
