A SENIOR Scottish Liberal Democrat has stepped down as a Westminster candidate and threatened to quit the party because of his disgust over the MPs' expenses scandal.
Stuart Currie, the deputy leader of East Lothian Council, has been left disillusioned by the scandal which has overwhelmed Westminster politics.

Mr Currie did not name any single member in an interview with his local paper, but he is reportedly
most disappointed with the way that distinguished politicians from his party have been implicated.

Mr Currie has also resigned as convener of the East Lothian Liberal Democrats and is considering quitting the party.

"More and more details about the MPs' expenses are coming out every day," he said. "When you start to see the names of people from your own party emerging from the woodwork you start to think to yourself – can I really stand and share a platform with these people?"

The party is on its third candidate in two years for top Scottish target Aberdeen South and has only four listed on its website.

A Lib Dem spokesman said: "It's disappointing, but Mr Currie obviously has his own reasons. We don't think this has damaged our chances of success at the next general election."

Acting East Lothian party convener Judy Riley said: "We are saddened by Stuart Currie's decision. The Liberal Democrats in East Lothian will continue to work hard to reverse years of decline under Labour."

There are unconfirmed reports Mr Currie did not have the total support of local party members, with 14 reportedly voting against him at the selection meeting, even though he was the only choice.

Mr Currie was unavailable for comment on the issue.

• A bid to delay legislation aimed at cleaning up Westminster in the wake of the expenses scandal failed last night.

An amendment to the Parliamentary Standards Bill which would have forced the government to wait 14 days between today's second reading and the committee stage was rejected by 110 votes to 88, giving the government a majority of 22.

Who is left to stand for the Lb Dems...must be a WRI volunteer somewhere they can call on....or has Nicol packed that in as well?

Lib Dems are finished in Scotland..their heartland and they can't even get a candidate..no surprise...they stand for nothing.

Mr Currie having stepped down, demonstrated there is people of integrity in Scottish/UK politics.
The electorate will be watching with interest to see if there are any more people in politics who are prepared to vote with thier feet.
Labour never resign, the electorate have been spun, robbed and taken to war.
The only way to get rid of Labour is to vote them out.
Scotland is at a new Dawn of politics. For the first time, Labour are in as dire straights as the Tories were in 1997. The tories havent recovered since then and the Libdems are the major parties poodle. Nobody is going to be fooled by the spin machine before the general election.

Vote SNP and give scotland a fighting chance.

Who's the odd one out? A banker handing back his bonus; Santa Claus and an honest politician?

Santa of course! The other two are fictional.

Was it not the fact that Lib Dems did not repay the millions they received from fraudster Brown who had a criminal record when he donated the money and left a trail of unpaid creditors.

Considering the Liberal Democrats have led the way for change and most recently tabled a motion at Westminster for change in 2007 that was rejected by both the Tory and Labour parties at Westminster I suspect this is a bit of a smokescreen excuse.

Bearing in mind it was the LibDems like David Steel and canon Kenyon Wright were at the forefront of setting standards when the devolved Scottish was first set up. Now these Scottish style expenses rules are being recommended as the format for Westminster so I think we can in the main hold our LibDem heads high once again if truth be known.

Yes its true there will always be the "black sheep" in every family but hey thats reality - so let he who hath not sinned cast the first stone?

Hats of to Mr Currie, an honest politician is rarer than snow in the sahara, but it can happen.

Only today, the Daily Telegraph reports on Jonathan Djanolgy, the Tory Shadow Solicitor General, a millionaire in his own right, who claimed £13,000 of parliamentary expenses to employ an au pair?

However, this was only an excuse to employ a cleaner.
Mr. Djanogly's election agent has already deserted him.

He has already rushed to repay £25,000 to HMCR which is now looking into Mr Djanogly's other arrangements as he also failed to declare PAYE for his au pair, or is that cleaner?

"His party, however, is the least corrupt of those exposed by the Telegraph"

Considering that the Telegraph, with it's Westminster tinted glasses only looked at Labour, Tories and Liberals, that's not saying much.

My own belief, though it is not really koscher, is that most politicians go into politics to help their fellow man, and their country. The perks of the job make up for the snash they get from the opposition and the papers. Those perks were established maybe over a hundred years ago and have been whittled down ever since. Keep the ones you have to get the UK out of a real mess. Also I would vote Labour into power at the next election. They can be up and running when the crunch comes next year. I did not say in Scotland, I mean I am a Scottish Nationalist, it is just they are a better quality in opposition.

"Considering that the Telegraph, with it's Westminster tinted glasses only looked at Labour, Tories and Liberals, that's not saying much."

Er....no. The Telegraph also looked at the Northern Irish parties and the SNP too.

How else do you think we know about Salmond's claims for food when Parliament was in recess, and Robertson's claims for a £2,300 sofa bed amongst other extravagancies.

"Goodness gracious a politician with morals, this guy qualifies for membership of the SNP."

Yes the SNP MPs have such good morals don't they?

They wouldn't dream of claiming for food they didn't eat, or claiming for luxurious items such as a sofa bed for £2,300 would they?

And if they did claim for such things they would of course pay the money back immediately wouldn't they....

16 When your wife goes shopping do you eat all the food on the same day ? We put ours in freezers or it comes in metal boxes called tins ,and if it were an expense we would wait till the month after we had bought any so we would know how much to claim.

It could just as easily refer to food eaten in restaurants to maximise the time doing what he is paid to do ,ie be at Westminster or meals en route !
At least they have not claimed for shelves which must be the only DIY kit (you jave to saw down the trees yourself) that you can pay somebody else to erect !

If that is the level of LAbour NO WONDER YOU ARE OUT ON YOUR EARS (could be an amagram) and will shortly be so at WESTMIDDEN ALSO and the incoming Tory government which will govern Scotland will be your doing 100%.
Perhapsyou would focus better if you opened your eyes?

14 You will not be disappointed then! Some people are determined to secure a Labour opposition at Westminster. What good it will do Scotland in itself I have no idea. The only benefit I can see is those who did vote Labour can then be identified as total numpties for having done so when they have absolutely no chance of winning.

Unless one is particularly fond of betting on three legged horses then the Lame Duck Labour Party are a stupidity Scotland cannot afford any longer.

The Tories will seize power at Westminster, and its not even something that Labour dare to deny! What they have got between their ears poses another two questions
1) How did it get there?
2) Is there any known treatment.

Considering they already elected 18 years of Tory government including Thatcher by this very same "Labour will win" nonsense suggests we are in for the same again thanks to these total dipsticks.
I think we might all have to come to Tasmania soon!Scotland will be part of a bankrupt UK thanks to these clowns.

They claim to be socialist. I'm still trying to discover which particular version of Socialist thinking includes pressing the self destruct button? Where I grew up we called this "aff yer heid".

Fibdums in Scotland are heading in the same direction as the bust UK economy - down. And soon they will be out. Just like New Labour.

The future for Britain is:

Tories get UK rump (and its debt, trade deficit, nae resources, and its many societal challenges)

Scots people reclaim Scotland (and its oil, trade surplus, plentiful resources, and a society confident and at peace with itself)

Maybe Tavish can see the way the wind blaws.

Good to see the Golden Oldies getting a spin again. The desperate attempt by desperate Labour and its friends in the media to make a big story out of Alex Salmond's tiddly expenses claim has fallen flat. Her claimed £800 of a tax free perk when he could have claimed £4800 like most MPs did. This perk is not tied to periods when Parliament is sitting
In particular the whole pathetic campign died a death when it was revealed that the anti-Scottish Secretary claims his full whack every month (and twice on one month) even when he was in China. By his own testament (to justify getting a big dollop of money to "flip" his main resifence back to Scotland) he spends most of his time in Scotland now. But he still claims his Westminster food allowance all the time.
Can we have your comment, please, Yeah1
After we've dealt with that we can perhaps have a look at Lord Foulkes and the £40,000 he claimed for staying in a house he owned as his mother had left it to him.
I could go and on and on..........
