A father appeared in court today charged with the murder of his baby daughter in a house fire.
William Middleton appeared in private following the death of eight-month-old Annalise Middleton two weeks ago.

Middleton, 32, from Lerwick on the Shetland Islands, also faced two charges of attempted murder.

He made no plea or declaration during the appearance at Lerwick Sheriff Court and was committed for further examination.

He was remanded in custody.

Annalise died following the fire at the family home in the village of Brae on September 20.

A six-year-old girl and four-year-old boy escaped serious injury.

An investigation was launched following the fire by Northern Constabulary and Highlands and Islands Fire and Rescue.
