DRINKS giant Diageo last night said it was "convinced" its plan to close the Johnnie Walker bottling plant was best for the long-term future of the brand.
However, Andrew Morgan, president of Diageo Europe allayed fears that the firm wants to move bottling operations out of Scotland.

Last week the firm said it may shut the Kilmarnock factory and the Port Dundas grain distillery in Glasgow, which cou
ld see a total of 900 workers lose their jobs. The Kilmarnock plant closure alone may see 700 jobs lost.

Andrew Morgan, president of Diageo Europe, said the decision had not been taken lightly but was thought to be the best option for the company.

He said: "We have found this a very difficult decision to make. It's taken us a while to land on what is a big decision.

"However for the long-term health of the business I'm convinced it's absolutely the right thing for us to be doing and alongside that we now need to work with the people of Kilmarnock to have this come about in the best possible way for them."

He added: "This is in no way an attempt to take bottling out of Scotland. We firmly believe that consumers love the idea that Scotch whisky is completely produced end to end within the Scottish Borders."

The House of Commons will next Wednesday debate the closure plans. It comes after the matter was raised at Prime Minister's Questions earlier this week and boosts hopes of a cross-party campaign to persuade Diageo to maintain the brand's links with Kilmarnock.

Des Browne, the MP for Kilmarnock and Loudoun who secured the debate, said: "Diageo's proposals will have a devastating effect on my constituency. Already, East Ayrshire has one of the highest rates of unemployment and poverty in the country.

"It is right we are given the opportunity to debate the likely affects of this decision, the way it has been announced without consultation, and the wider implications of the severance of two centuries of links between Scotch whisky and Kilmarnock."

Meanwhile, SNP MSP for Kilmarnock and Louden, Willie Coffey, described as "outrageous" Diageo's plans to move 64 jobs from Hurlford, on the outskirts of Kilmarnock, to an outside company in Linwood, Renfrewshire, in September.

I told you so!

Their decision was made, and finalised in the first instance, I think 'talk' and meeting to 'talk', 'talk' is all it will be!

I hope that I am proved wrong this time, but I just get the feeling, we have all been through similar scenario's before, to-which the outcome, only favoured, big Companies such as Diageo.

The issue surely is not whether this plant will close but whether scotland can retain the bottling production facilities. From another article it stated that the production was being moved to fife. As such if this company are simply rationalising production from 3 plants to 2, to make them self more competitive then there is little that can be done and should be done.

The biggest problem is timing happening during a very bad recession where the uk economy is in such a mess and will be for a long time with huge levels of debt and a scottish economy whose growth rate is a disgrace over the past 30yrs.

Alan,

It was about 2years ago, that I made reference to the demise of our Scottish Whisky Industry, it was in this Paper to-which I made comment on this subject.
Call it instinct, or a 6th sense, you just get that nasty-feeling, Scotland once again will loose out.

According to the Northbritish person and the Britcybernats Murphy, Broone and their Tame Union had saved the day, whilst the wicked Salmond, Robertson and the SNP had closed the plant?

# 3 The Scottish Whisky Industry has just lost a nine year legal battle with Canada. Glennora distilleries are now calling their whisky Glen Breton. Read about it in the Cape Breton post.

What has happened to yesterday's disgracefully spun 'Salmond Snub' fairy tale?

Perhaps the powers that be at 'The Anti-Scotsman' realised that their blatant lies and distortion were completely out of step with the truth of this story as reported by the rest of the media which still retain some pretence of actually being newspapers as opposed to being propaganda rags for the unionist quislings.

I thought that Jim Murphy, the horse-faced hero, had saved the day?!?

Shurely shome mishtake, etc.

What! Even though Spud told them not to?

'the unionist quislings.'

The gnats continued use of the word Quisling for anyone who disagrees with them simply shows their ignorance of how their political antecedents behaved during WW2.

Any Scottish Quisling would have been a gnat. Don't forget that.

I don't think the west coast should worry about this, it looks like the two pandas Spud Murphy got for Embra zoo are heading to Glasgow.

That will, of course, solve all your problems and win many a plaudit for Spud.

Usual hand wringing wretchedness from the unionista cabal. Nothing constructive to add to the debate, just use the situation to criticise the SNP and to hell with trying to work together to save this plant.

Dreadful as per usual.

15,16,19, Diageo must have read all the statements issued by the Quislings yesterday and thought, "They don't care about our workers, only about themselves" and followed suit.

Stan has made this claim many times before.

It seems he is uncomfortable with the reality of his support of a foreign power ruling Scotland makes him what it makes him in the eyes of normal men who would rather fight for their countries right to self determination.

The problem is they are getting desperate. The British Empire is over. Dis United Kingdom is finished and freedom will return to these lands without any more blood shed.
