A REVIEW is set to be carried out into the number of events staged on the Meadows to save the beauty spot from further damage.
Councillors have ordered the review after giving the go-ahead for two major Festival shows to be staged there this August.

The bid by the Lady Boys of Bangkok cabaret show and a circus big tent – hosting the Chinese State Circus – attracted dozens
of objections from campaigners, who claimed the grass had barely recovered from last year's events.

Despite the protests, councillors agreed to the licence applications at a meeting yesterday, but said there was a need to look at the wider use of the park.

Committee member Councillor Ian Perry said: "We have to come to a decision about what we do with the Meadows.

"Do we use it more extensively, less extensively or ban all activities? I don't think it's fair to penalise one activity, but we need to get it sorted out very quickly."

The Friends of the Meadows, Southside Community Council and Merchiston Community Council were among the objectors to Urban Circus Ltd's plans.

Bridget Stevens, chairwoman of Merchiston Community Council, said the shows left part of the Meadows "unusable" for several months. She said: "To permit a month-long takeover of this public park is unfair to both visitors to our city and local residents."

Neighbours had complained about a large number of vehicles and caravans at the site, noise caused by audiences late at night and excessive flyposting.

A combination of bad weather last year and new events such as the Moonwalk and the Taste of Edinburgh Festival had left the middle section of the Meadows in its worst state of repair for years.

Geraldine Brown, of the Friends of the Meadows, said: "The people living around the Meadows recognise that it's public space. There are many local community events. But we are against large-scale events that take over the same part until the end of August, starting with the Moonwalk.

"It's a very intensive use of a particular part, which we feel is inappropriate and damaging."

But the shows' organisers insist they are "good neighbours" and repair any damage each year.

Peter Lawson, licensing agent for Urban Circus, said it paid £2000 on top of rent to cover repairs to the Meadows. It also paid a bond for any additional damage, which had been returned by the council last year.

Get rid of the crap Cabaret and drunken bums and give the Meadows back to the people who deserve them.

Put the Ladyboys down at Holyrood - they can take advantage of all those tourists flocking to see that wonderous architecture.

Yet another "review", once again a "panel discussion", the ever-popular "commission of enquiry".

These are just palliatives issued by ineffective and atrociously bumbling councils to delay change and perpetuate instituionalised "do-nothingness".

They always seem to use that one space just to the east of Middle Meadow Walk. It has a whole compound of tents on it right now and the grass still hasn't recovered from last year.

They need to move these events around the rest of The Meadows and indeed to Holyrood and other parks.

If the Ladyboys have their show there, at least stop them from parking their trailers and living there too. It's not a suitable space from camping.

If the city were so concerned about saving the Meadows, why did they allow Quartermile to ruin the place, with a supermarket, Starbucks and God knows what else in the pipeline.

It's a public park, not a retail park!

You will probably find there are secret plans to develop the park into a huge retail and residentail area, with several hotels and cinema complex. That should solve the grass problem.

The Ladyboys and Circus are good events that are only on the meadows for one month.
The problem last year was that it rained for the whole of June and extra events like the Moonwalk and channel.4 food show had already made a mess of the grass.
As for drunken bums, well they are sitting in the Meadows every day of the year now!

Save it from the dog sh.. as well or is that OK with the The Friends of the Meadows - probably cause they have wee doggies. My 3 years old grandaughter was happily running around there the other day and got covered in the stuff. Can't blame the ladyboys because it is nearly a year since they have been there :-)

Goat Boy (No. 6): Well given the huge amount of office, retail, leisure and residential developments in Quatermile, the sheer numbers of office workers, shoppers and flat dwellers traversing the Meadows daily will soon trample the grass to a mudbath.

Notice how the Sainsbury's and Starbuck do not feature in these design visualisations of the Quartermile new build which faces onto Middle Meadow Walk:

What next? KFC? Burger King?

#2 "All those tourists" are what makes a good deal of "all that money" , please. Why run down the tourists? I plan to be one next year, but I won't make a mess in your lovely country. I love it,too. Trust at least some of us? Please.

I'm pretty annoyed that they have been given the go ahead but hopefully the council will stop them camping on there.

Well said Rabbitsfoot. The blankety festivals aren't for the residents who pay to clean up all the mess left. Too many tourists who are daft enough to encourage the tartan tat shops and mess up our city while being "back home in the old country".
