THREE American troops have been killed in fighting west of Baghdad, the military said yesterday, making April the deadliest month for US forces in Iraq since September.
At least 18 US soldiers died in Iraq last month, up from March's total of nine, which was the lowest since the war began in March 2003.

The two US marines and a sailor were killed on Thursday while conducting combat operations in Anbar province,
a former insurgent stronghold that has been relatively calm since Sunni tribal leaders in the area turned against al-Qaeda in Iraq.

The deaths come as a series of suicide bombings in recent weeks has raised concerns that insurgents were stepping up their efforts to reignite sectarian bloodshed and derail security gains that have brought overall violence to its lowest levels in recent years.

Most of the violence has targeted Iraqis since the Americans have begun preparing for a withdrawal from urban areas by the end of June. But attacks have continued against US forces.

Meanwhile, US soldiers will not appear in Iraqi courts to answer any charges relating to a raid this week that killed two people and triggered condemnation from the prime minister, Nouri al-Maliki.

Brigadier-General Peter Bayer, the chief of staff for the US military's day-to-day operations in Iraq, said the raid in the southern city of Kut was "lawful and legal" and had been co-ordinated with the knowledge of the Iraqi government.

Under the US-Iraqi security pact that came into force this year, American troops cannot conduct military operations without Iraqi approval.

You would think that now would be the time for the Iraqis to halt all violence,so we could say,"See? It's all good.",and then we'd say so long and leave. Then they could fight it out among themselves,(As we all know they will),and bring in their new strongman leader. It's almost as if they were stepping up the violence to keep us there,so as to prevent any more violence. Not to mention our money. In the meantime two more young Marines are gone, not to mention one Navy Corpsman (I assume,no one's said.)Who's only crime was to wish to provide medical help to all and sundry.

However that is not going to happen. The fortification and garrisoning of Iraq is virtually complete; it is an important part of the USA's presence in the area to control the world (aka 'looking after America's interests), particularly events in the Caspian Basin, Central Asia and the Middle East.

Don't give me all that discredited neocon stuff about helping Iraq; nobody believes the Bush/Blair/Olmert lies any more. Obama/Brown/Netanyahu have taken over; a whole new chapter of deception opens.

@3 "Obama/Brown/Netanyahu have taken over; a whole new chapter of deception opens"

That's an interesting observation because I see it quite to the opposite: Obama is detached from Israel and expresses no consistent policy; and he's also disingenuous from solving the Iranian nuclear issue, which leaves only one door open, and that is for Israel to remove the Iranian site itself without American back-up. I have no doubt that it's going to happen. -And when it does most countries in the region will say little except for a huge collective sigh of relief.
It will stop the nuclear proliferation and the arms build up in the region, or at least push it back five years. And that is a good thing.

I realize you color every thought with hatred for Bush/Blair/Brown etc but the fact is countries around Iran do not want to be controlled or attacked by Iran. Dubai has been buying up mega amounts of anti-missiles to protect itself against Iran, etc.

This country is in such dire trouble it's long past time to quit this hang-em high rhetoric. It's time to grow up and act like adults and be responsible.

Anyone who isn't a partisan hack should agree, that if Bush and Cheney are criminals, then Pelosi is equally, as is Diane Feinstein. I believe Feinstein was the member who asked if there was more (torture) that could be done to extract information. In hindsight, we could assume she had grave concern over the attack on Los Angeles. If Bush is to be indicted, let's make an honest list that includes every member of congress who voted for the war, the United Nations who before he even took office, was urging the US to deal with Hussein. Let's include Kennedy who got us into Viet Nam.
Let's include Roosevelt who dragged us into WWII. Let's include Wilson. Let's include Obama who is spilling more American blood into Afghanistan.

Absolutely. The UN should have been involved from the beginning, and should be there now.

It was obvious when Colin Powell stood up in the UN and lied through his teeth for Bushco that tragedy was inevitable, and we'll be paying the price for ever.

But as I say, there is no way that the USA empire will leave Iraq.

Obama is not detached, he's in the pocket of Israel with his IDF chief of staff to make sure he toes the line.

And Israel can't do a thing without USA help; they wouldn't even exist without USA help.

Obamaco has taken over from Bushco; criminals all.

Wally,

By The Rivers Of Babylon (USA) 03/05/2009 16:55:52
from our point of view every day somebody takes another piece of us.

http://icasualties.org/Iraq/index.aspx

Yesterday an Iraqi soldier decided to kill some Americans. He succeeded at killing 2 before he himself was killed. and these Americans only joined up in the military so they could have a secure job. It is well documented that the majority of our people simply don't go along with this foreign policy. Doesn't matter, every day they take another piece of our nation.

"these Americans only joined up in the military so they could have a secure job."

Maybe that's true where you live, -especially if, as you say it is the place of the apocalypse and the end of civilization, of course everyone wants to get out, -but it isn't true for where I live.

The military in this region has a lot of support, and are given an honor above others.
You need to get out in the world and meet these people. They do not enlist because they're unemployed, they enlist because they believe they will shape the future and define their generation.
Many of my daughters friends have joined, they are very proud to serve and most reenlist.
Most have college degrees or specific tech training, none of them are uneducated or unemployed.

"they went after nixon"?

let me guess you get your "news" from the "little ronnie howard section" of netflix dont you?

THEY never went after nixon...

Ford pardoned him and it was done...

FROST did an interview... which at the time even the nixon haters viewed as a hatchet job...

however NOW that we have such bitter partisan divides, there is a LOT of history that is being rewritten... by those too ignorant of what REALLY was going on, and those whose only interest was to remake history...

That's what happens when you invade a country for no good reason and then try to occupy it.
