MIGRANT workers from Eastern Europe boosted the population of the Highlands and Islands by nearly 2,000 between 2007 and 2008, according to new figures, but there are signs the numbers have peaked.
The annual estimates from the General Register Office for Scotland show population numbers rose by 1,960 to 465,740. The increase was entirely attributable to immigration, with 2,271 people moving into the area. At the same time, there were 311 more deaths than births.
Numbers in Highland region rose overall by 1,960. Moray was up by 900, and Orkney and Shetland by 30. But the population in Argyll and Bute fell by 850 and in the Western Isles by 100.
