PRIVATE landlords will have an important role to play if Scotland wants to end homelessness, a city-based charity has warned.
Shelter Scotland's head of policy told a conference yesterday that it would offer a chance for private landlords to rebuild their reputation, and help the country meet its internationally acclaimed target of ending homelessness by 2012.

The charity's Gavin Corbett told the summit: "Private landlords have not always enjoyed the best reputation over the decades.

"But today, as never before, there are landlords who actively want to work with local councils to provide a service to a whole range of tenants, including those facing homelessness.

"With councils and housing associations staring down the barrel of tight budgets and mortgage lenders still frozen in the headlights of the housing downturn, there is no doubt that private landlords have an increased role to play in housing homeless people."

absolute nonsense the homelessness is down to the council who need to build more houses as soon as possible.going on about a tight budget doesnt help instead of spending millions of trams when we have a perfectly good bus service they should have spent it on council houses. my husband and i and our 5 children spent 22months in the homeless and we have also lived in houses owned by private landlords therefore we speak from experience. private landlords are only a temporary solution there is not security in living in someone elses home people need their own homes, and in the long run it costs the council millions to keep people in private accommodation so even though to start with it would cost the council more to build new houses in the long run it would work out cheaper than paying millions in rent cheques

the council should make land they own available to people to build their own homes. it would cost the council nothing, and get better off people out of council houses , making room for those in need.
and the short assured tenancy should be outlawed.
