STEVEN Fletcher last night left Hibs to sign a four-year contract with Barclays Premier League newcomers Burnley in a deal that has netted the Easter Road club £3 million.
The Scotland striker, voted the football writers' young player of the year for the past two seasons, had attracted a bid from Celtic in the January transfer window which was rejected by Hibs, and with no further interest forthcoming from Celtic under new manager Tony Mowbray, the 22-year-old has opted to link up with Owen Coyle at Turf Moor. After completing his move to the Lancashire club last night, Fletcher, who has four Scotland caps and scored the winning goal in the recent 2-1 World Cup qualifying win over Iceland at Hampden, said he believed he would continue to grow as a player under former St Johnstone manager Coyle.

"I am absolutely delighted to sign for the club," said Fletcher, who scored 52 goals in 190 games for Hibs. "It is a great feeling to be here and I am just looking forward to getting the season started now. As soon as I heard that Burnley were after me, and knowing Owen Coyle as I do from my time in Scotland, I thought this was the right place to come and develop my career.

"The opportunity came along in January for me to join Celtic, but Hibs did not think it was the right time to move on.

"When the chance arrived to come to the Premier League and play for a club like Burnley, I was glad they accepted that and let me come down."

The loss of Fletcher comes as a blow to new Hibs manager John Hughes, who immediately spoke of his admiration for the forward when he took over from Mixu Paatelainen last month. Hughes, however, was in all probability resigned to losing Fletcher, and he will hope that a portion of the sizeable transfer fee will be made available to him to freshen up his squad.

Before the deal went through, Hughes confirmed Burnley's interest and revealed how he had spoken of the player's attributes in a telephone call to Owen Coyle. The Hibs manager added: "I am a great admirer of Fletch and I'd love to have the opportunity to work with him.

"I am a manager and a coach and I work with the players at my disposal. But I also understand football is a business and Hibs run a very good business."

The Hibs supporters, too, will be desperate to see some of the windfall reinvested in the team, having seen the club rake in more than £13m in recent seasons through the sale of Garry O'Connor, Steven Whittaker, Kevin Thomson, Scott Brown, David Murphy and now Fletcher.

Hughes, whose side returns to training today after the close-season break, now faces a battle to persuade captain Rob Jones to stay, with Nottingham Forest still believed to be keen on taking the central defender to the City Ground.

The £3m fee represents a club record for Burnley, who made Fletcher their second signing within a day having earlier snapped up full-back Tyrone Mears from Derby County.

Can't say that I'm too upset if £3M plus add on's is correct. Ever time we lose a high quality players another ones just seems to step up. It's just what happens at Hibs.

Unfortunately we will never be able to stop players who want to go on and earn big money. We can't compete with clubs in the EPL, or the OF, but at least we force them all to pay "top dollar" now.

JH still has an excellent squad and will surely add a few more faces for increased competition. It will be good to see how we perform this season with a manager who knows how a midfield works.

' ....he (Hughes) will hope that a portion of the sizeable transfer fee will be made available to him to freshen up his squad.'

No chance - the money will mostly go to balance the books after a lean season at the gates and complete the funding for the new stand.

At least The Scotsman is one news source that hasn't spun it as "Burnley beat Celtic to Stephen Fletcher" or "Celtic lose out on Fletcher".

Private Pike,

#6 So why are you even talking about it then?

As your interest is confined to Celtic and as Celtic are out of the picture as far as Fletcher is concerned. Why mention it?
8

Private Pike,

01/07/2009 02:18:30
I don't want the money invested in new players for the team. Maybe a wee increase in wages.

I'd rather see the ground completed with the rebuilding of the East Stand. I think that the East Stand supporters opted for a single tier stand. If they did, it's important that they're listened to.
9

Cammy,

Edinburgh 01/07/2009 02:29:58
#Shantaram, You're never happy are you. :-)

Personally I think that Celtic being so "Penny Pinching" is what lost you the league. All this "We didn't know how much Hibs wanted" rubbish. You know how much they wanted when your bid is accepted, just ask Owen Coyle.

If Celtic had been smart enough to pick up Fletch in January then you would probably still be celebrating the SPL title right now. It was the problem with strikers that cost you.

Obviously I'm delighted that Fletch went down south, as he will have a chance to grow into a quality player on the big stage. As a Hibs fan, watching the OF derby is just so frustrating, as there's half a Hibs team on the park.

Have a great day.

11

Ex-Pat Stanton,

01/07/2009 03:06:14
I'm with Private Pike on this one, we need to finish our stadium. Once the ground has been completed it will be the final drain on our resourses out with the team on the park. Any further tranfer activity once the stadia is complete can and will be spent on the team, without racking up ridiculous amounts of debt like we have before, and without the need for pie in the sky type investments, al la hotels etc. This is the only truely sustainable model for any football club in very uncertain times.

The future is green...

#8 & #11

The timing of the sale will allow the new stand to be commenced. Exactly the point I made in my post #4. I am sure that the board have just been waiting for this which is why they knocked back the Celtic penny pinchers when Fletcher was on a long-term contract. The Parkhead chancers stole Scott McDonald for £500k and now thay are quoting EPL clubs £6.0 million for him.

The kind of player that can be bought for £100,000 or so and Hibs level of wages is usually wasting money i.e. the Nishs or Rankins of this world. Tony Mowbray found a good on in Jones, but those type of finds are rare.

Jamtart,

THe idea that bricks and mortar are better than just plain old debt is not entirely stupid now is it?

THe very simple fact is, while the East terracing is brilliant in terms of atmosphere, the view and facilities are dire. We need a new stand end of. It's not only crumbling in places but has rotten views of the pitch in most places too. It really is time to do it now and not have to worry about it in the future. The team is finishing rebuilding slowly with a new set of exciting youngsters coming through and the possibilities of increasing their wage demands as they mature into our next golden generation on the cards if we have no further building work to undertake.

The future is Green...

Fair point you need decent facilities to pull them in as well just making the point that if you have a team banging them in and winning you will pull the crowds no matter the facilities -remember when it was basically all standing with a toilet at each end of the ground or are you to young for that.

I post on both Hibs and Hearts threads as I have an interest in Edinburgh football.I do not support Hibs but I do have a genuine desire to see both of the Edinburgh clubs making some sort of challenge to the old firm.

What spoils these threads is unpleasant, uneducated mongerels like you who are incapable of having a reasonable conversation with anyone.Your need to resort to personal insults only proves your total lack of grey matter and enforces the fact that you are indeed a fool and an embarrassment to all the decent Hibs fans and Scotland in general.

As we all know, Fletcher's been going for ages, so good luck to him. Good financial deal for Hibs again but how long can we keep pulling these players out of a hat? I don't think Hibs saw the best of him.

I'm sure that Cregg will prove to be a genius and if Hibs can secure a decent two-footed striker to feed off Riordan, we might be talking some success to come.

PS. I wish trumpets like Jamtart would stop clogging up Hibs threads every day, spouting gash with his 'wit' of an 8 year-old, "MON THE JT'S etc"- very tiresome! The odd comment maybe, but the constant stream of effluent bugs me. There's a nice Hearts thread about them talking up the sale of Driver. Surely of more interest? Apparently not. I've never met one, but Aussie Jambos seem even more 'superior', bombastic and annoying than the Embra ones! I didn't think that was possible! There, that feels better.

Praise the Lord, Celtic's days of taking average players from Embra seem a thing of the past.

I was sick and tired of Strachan taking duds from the capital, that includes the over-hyped Brown and Caldwell.

If i'd wanted to watch sub standard rubbish like Pressley, Riordan, Killen, Hartley and the rest i'd have bought tickets for the Embra derby but as a lover of good football would probably go golfing insead.

It hopefully reminds them that they can talk cr*p all they want, but there will only ever be one team in Edinburgh for the sane and educated.

You obviously quite like Pat McGinlay. I thought he was great, but the real legend for me was the other Pat. I remember grown men (and me) crying on the terraces when it was announced he was going to the smellies in hoops. I haven't felt that since about any player, and Fletcher's going is just routine. We'll just get on with it and hopefully do better than last year.

Said it yesterday that Burnley have a very good strike force already so I can see Fletcher struggling at first to get a game as Coyle will be loyal to the guys who got him promotion.

When the Burnley blip starts Fletcher will get his chance in the EPL.

Good to see a young player putting his playing career ahead of his bank balance and a place in the OF stand each Saturday. However, for every Fletcher there is an unhealthy amount of Gow's, Websters, Flood's and Killens's who went for the cash.

Bit of a shame little or none of the money for fletcher will go to hughes.

With little to no supporters coming to watch the team, riordans OTT salary, Mixu picking up a pretty penny in compensation as well as compensation for Hughes hibs were desperate to balance the books before pre-season training started.

What must really worry Hughes is that the last two hibs managers were legends who were abused on web message boards, during games by the half baked pink inbreds who swing on the east stands rafters.

Signing players who almost got falkirk relegated will see Hughes get a similar fate to both Collins and Mixu: no transfer money, abused by fans then shown the door.

Good luck Fletch, no doubt you will love playing at Anfield next season, the team that you support! The new 1 tiered East Stand will start contstruction soon, only got until next year to start before the planning consent runs out. Soon the infrastructure will be complete with a manageable debt which will allow future player sales to be re-invested into the playing pool.

Expect Mallo to be conformed today and then Galbraith either today or later this week. Stokes to be confirmed next week on a season long loan.

Good luck fletch, think he's got all the attributes to make it down there, maybe not at the top end of the league, but if he keeps progressing and improving, he'll be alright.

Some ill-informed points I have to take up here. Re. fletch not getting a game - they only really have robbie blake (winger) and martin paterson up front, fletch has been allocated the #9 shirt at turfmoor.

Think there should be a split between funding the stand and the manager. This cash should be used to tie-up jones and I.Murray on good deals. Get some of the stand on tic, we're just about debt-free, so a balance needs to be struck. Keep going and we're gonna have a crackin 21,000 stadium, with nobody wanting to go because the soul has been ripped out the team. There is an argument we could get more bums back on seats while building the stand, but Mr Hughes would be nothing short of a miracle worker if that was the case.

I'd like to see Hughes bring in a RB and offer a good deal to Stephen Hughes, with jones (hopefully) staying, moroccans hopefully back, U19's and a coupla other signings that seem to be in the pipeline, we wont be in too bad shape.

Oh, and weegies GTF, we really just dont care. And this Pat McGinlay is a joke, never a hibby.

A rare event but thanks Rolland. Post #74 confirms once and for all that this Pat McGinlay is no Hibbee. All fans of sides please ignore his brainless posts.

Hibs have needed a penalty box type striker or about 3 years. Young Kurtis Byrne knows the way to goal but the step up to SPL may be too much for him at this stage. If Campbell is still there he is not really the answer either and JJ should be paid off asap. Nish and Riordan can do a job if both played up front i.e. not played on the right and left wings as Mixu did o accommodate Fletcher.

#75 key issue is - Will work on the Hibs new stand start?
IMO - very unlikley given the current financial climate. Fletcher's transfer money is needed to balance the books (Mixus pay off and Yogi's compensation) and restore funds lost by Farmer and Petrie during stock market collapse. Also turnover from on-going business at ER must be well down given the slump in attandances.

Cant work this out - Embra fans are glad Fletch never went to Glasgow and was 'wasted' through sitting in the stand....yet, apparently none of the Glasgpw teams could afford to spend 3 million on a bench dweller.

I reckon they are correct. Gone are the days when either Glasgow side could spend millions on average players from Edinburgh as bench warmers. There may be a future for Scottish football yet!

Tell you what, I fear the Embra teams will be fighting it out at the wrong end of the league next season

What are you on sonny ? Only one Embra team will be in the relegation battle and they've just sold thir "star player" for 3 Mil. Whilst the BIG Embra team are storming over Europe in the Europa League. BTW how come hobos aren't in it ? After all half the league is or did you not finish in the top half ?

105 - "Whilst the BIG Embra team are storming over Europe in the Europa League."

Let me explain the two (2) fundemental errors in that statement:

1) There are no big teams in Embra. Embra is footballing mediocrity zone of the most mediocre order. Two rubbish teams, with rubbish stadiums and rubbish supports.

2) Hearts 'storming all over Europe' - of course!

108

edboy,

#108

1 - Both teams are big in their league and both stadiums are good aswell. As for the support, yes there are a small minority in both camps that are knuckle draggers but the majority are great supporters.

2 - Agree with this part however it is up to Csaba and hearts to prove the doubters wrong. Personally, even though I am a Hibs fan, I wish them well

3 - Overall, your comments are wide of the mark and smack of Old Firm arrogance

rangers' year end was yesterday methinks....the dreaded day has finally dawned when minty finds out just how bad things really are...it's a bit like someone who's been on a wild holiday for a fortnight with a credit card and is now about to open the envelope and find out the grim truth.

Minty hopes against hope that the debt won't have gone much above £30m....but we've all been there : 'I didn't spend THAT much did I ffs !!#!....cheezo...I fe ckin well did.'

The recession is deeper than everyone had thought, it started earlier than everyone thought, and it will last longer than everyone thought, and Lloyds (taxpayers') TSB have just announced a further 2,000 redundancies....taxpayers' TSB are now under the most severe pressure...to what extent can they cut the rangers any more slack ?

116

Andrew Sachs,

01/07/2009 14:26:25
116 - Hi Patrick, its terrible that once great posters such as you and I are reduced to slumming it on the 'embra' threads....still, as someone once said 'our day will come (again)...;-)

these threads ain't a patch on what they used to be and i'm only an occassional visitor these days. As I'm sure you're aware there was a fairly prolonged period when even the most trifling criticism of old minty moonbeams led to immediate dismissal....minty must have been paying someone to monitor 24/7 and ensure that any adverse posts were deleted.
It went on for quite a few months and I think a lot of people just got fed up. This time last year , a thread like this even loosely connected with Celtic would have drawn several hundred posts (if no others were open). C'est la vie.
121

Andrew Sachs,

01/07/2009 14:36:51
118 - Abe, we both know that irritance is a word. Now you can expose your inner plonker (even more so than before) by arguing that it isn't...but a quick skwatch at google will tell you otherwise. Just accept it, same as you accept your embra inferiority. Its written all over your bitter, hurting comments for all to see.

122

Andrew Sachs,

01/07/2009 14:40:04
Patrick, over here at Playbhoy Mansions, I have had to find other ways to amuse myself, but yes, it was around that time that I got a bit fed up with it myself.

Did note that a thread was closed quickly last week when doctor deaths war record came up. Not sure why, he was the home secratary when it kicked off. And the only action he seen was that square up to the big guy in East London. Looked a bit nervous though, it has to be said. Didn't fancy his chances.
123

Andrew Sachs,

01/07/2009 14:48:49
Like Pat McGinley in reverse!

I don't think we have good enough players to do any better than we have done lately in the CL. Sad but true. Might manage to keep hold of the ball a bit better, but then again, Brown, McDonald will still be there so, I can see our play still being characterised by typical posession breakdowns like last season. You'd think that keeping a hold of the ball would be the easy/easier bit of it with doing something with it 'the harder part'. We havent been able to do the easy bit in many games.
124

Andrew Sachs,

01/07/2009 15:06:01
127 - Pat, it takes a brave man to stand out from the crowd and speak his mind. You're probably as popular as Michael Jackson at swing park on this forum when you make comments like that.

erm, no. One look at google will confirm that irritance is not a word. Please post link to a established dictionary that lists "irritance" as a word.

No bitterness.

No inferiority.

Justified superiority.

Feejit.
126

Andrew Sachs,

01/07/2009 15:51:49
'Sad Sachs', surprised you resisted the temptation to use 'ball sachs', but nontheless, the chip on your shoulder is evident.

Irritance is a word. Its used extensively in English speaking countries throughout the world. That you can't find it in your 1977 Concise Oxford Dictionary is neither here nor there. Language development continues despite your outrage. Thats why they continuously update dictionaries every year - new words!

Now just because you chose to 'affect an air of superiority' in your last post, it doesn't mean that the rest of us will be fooled into missing your inferiority complex - not matter how much you want us to.

Ps - "erm", thats not in the dictionary and you probably should have wrote it with a capital 'E' seen as your such a tedious pedant!
127

RolIand,

01/07/2009 17:08:25
#130 Irritance? It's irritation surely, as in "Rolland can be a bit of an irritation". For more info:

A null return, so Sachs looks like you're OWNED! LOL
128

Andrew Sachs,

01/07/2009 17:20:26
132 - Roland...."OWNED"? In what way? In the same way that a 0-0 draw between Celtic and Hearts is a victory for Embra (see last season) or a Hibs defeat at Celtic can be seen as something to crow about because a reasonable amount of posession was held?

Not in the real world, mate!
