Hibs boss urges Ma-Kalambay to claim No. 1 jersey

Published Date: 04 July 2009
HIBS boss John Hughes will urge goalkeeper Yves Ma-Kalambay to grab the No.1 jersey and then make it his for keeps.
Since arriving at Easter Road two years ago, Ma-Kalambay has favoured the No.50 he wore at Chelsea, where he was understudy to Petr Cech, Carlo Cudicini, and Henrique Hilario.

Consequently the traditional goalkeeping number was left unused with Andy McNeil, Ma-Kalambay's rival for the gloves, sporting No.21 on his back. And, when former Polish goalkeeper Grzegorz Szamotulski arrived on a short-term deal for the second half of last season, he opted for the No.13.

But now Hughes, who is seeking to bring in a new goalkeeper with McNeil and Szamotulski having both left the club, wants ex-Belgian Under-21 star Ma-Kalambay to make a statement of intent to any newcomer by taking the No.1 for himself.

Although he may have some persuading to do, Hughes said: "I know Yves' superstitions but I want him to make that statement and then go and prove to me he is the No.1.

"If I was the only goalkeeper at a club, as Yves is at the moment, then I would say 'give me the No.1' and then it is up to me to keep it no matter who is brought to the club."

With only Thomas Flynn, newly promoted from Hibs' Under-19 side, as back-up to Ma-Kalambay, Hughes has made no secret of the fact he's seeking stiffer competition for that particular position.

And, although he has been strongly linked with Dani Mallo, now out-of-contract at his former club Falkirk, Hughes insisted he has options other than the Spanish star.

He said: "Dani did well for me at Falkirk, he came in at Christmas and kept ten clean sheets. He's an agile goalkeeper, he comes and punches the ball well and kicks it well.

"I can't just go with one goalkeeper, I need competition but I have many irons in many fires at the moment. We are sniffing about."

While he acknowledges Ma-Kalambay has been in the spotlight for losing a few bizarre goals, the most recent being Aberdeen's opener in the final game of last season when he crashed a clearance off the back of Dons striker Lee Miller and into the net, Hughes firmly believes the 6ft 5in stopper has plenty of potential.

He said: "Of course, you don't want to put up with that but I am looking forward to working with Maka. I think he has good potential.

"I'm told Maka is a right good shot stopper if a bit unorthodox. Every now and again he makes a mistake but most goalkeepers do that.

"You find that, as they gain more experience, those errors start to go out of their game because their decision making gets better and they get a better knowledge of the game."

Meanwhile, Hughes expects Merouane Zemmama and Abdessalam Benjelloun to report back for pre-season training after the Moroccan stars were given an extra week off following World Cup duty for their country.

And likewise, Sol Bamba should be back on Monday having struck that agreement with former boss Mixu Paatelainen before heading off to play World Cup qualifiers for the Ivory Coast.

Good to see Hughes carrying on the previous good work by Mowbray, Collins & Shrek.

There have been a number of decent SPL goalies up for grabs in recent years. Hibs failing to sign a reliable No.1 for going on 5 years now is a major, major mistake. I'm amazed their supporters don't kick up more of a fuss about it or that the press fail to make a big deal out of it - all good football teams are built from the back forward. Laslo's doing it the right way - make the team hard to beat first, then take it form there.

Good to see Hughes supporting the big man - back up is needed but he's as good as any in the league - check the stats watch the tapes Boruc makes as any howlers but you can't slag an OF keeper.

As for post #1 away DOWN in gorgie should be DOWAN AND OUT you're screwed ya despots

Which means hughes has been told no money for a descent keeper, make do with calamity james. He actualy improved last season though, as far as i saw and deserves a chance at the end of the day it will be the shoddy defence and murder midfield and only ratboy up front that will cost hibs their premier league status!.

Very odd that he hasnt signed Mallo yet, seems to me that he cant have much faith in him as surely he would have snapped him up by now rather than waiting all his time looking for another keeper.

Encouraged by Hughes' start : fletch gone for good money, A O'B gone for good and couple of squad players on cheap who are known to Manager. Cannot agree the Makalamby is good enough - bloke is ok shot stopper but , for his stature, no presence and too many basic errors. You know what you hobbos remind me of, a mental patient strapped in a straight jacket pumped full of drugs which makes the days come and go without any difference. Completely indifferent to the world and changing environment around but a dosile and content life. Exactly what the hobbos and the lack of ambition that's always been shown for many years and not one of you is prepared to even mention it never mind do anything.

I guess that's where the infactuation with the Hearts arises, the fact that we dare take on the establishment, have ambition and drive, really irkes you lot as you all think we should be like you lot. No thanks you can keep your insane ramblings and drug fuelled rants about the Hearts and how we will laugh when the lack of ambition costs you fuds a place in the top flight again.

You certainly have an unhealthy obsession with drugs and the effects of drugs.

I wonder what a psychiatrist would make of you. You accuse Hibs supporters of having an infactuation (sic) with Hearts while you're on a Hibs article making nasty and inapproriate comments.

Hibs supporters would want to see their team being successful but we have an awareness of the realities of football which is lacking in the poorly educated Hearts supporters like yourself.

I looked in vain for some condemnation of the Hearts supporter and his banana comment.

Did you not feel just a little bit ashamed? Or, like thousands of Hearts supporters 20 odd years ago, did you think it was OK to come out with things like that?

43 I'm interested in Hearts main rivals in the city that's all, but i noticed you don't disagree with my point. I know clubs have to cut cloth accordingly and live within means, but it's a sport and meant to be competative, hibs have always been anything but. It's quite interesting. Back when Mark Walters made his first appearance at Tynecastle. All the bananas came raining down. Walters, showing a lot more class than the thousands of gorillas that made up the crowd, ignored it and got on with the game.

Don't let any youngsters get the wrong idea here and think that what was acceptable then would not be acceptable now.

It was not acceptable then. Except for the Hearts supporters, Scottish society heaved together as their collective stomachs turned.

Celtic supporters had done the same the previous week but, disgusting as it was, nobody was very surprised. Given the typical OF fan it wasn't unexpected. For Hearts fans to copy them in a premeditated display of overt racism was somehow more shocking.

I was a steward at that game and I still can hardly believe what happened. Although there are many decent Hearts supporters there is still a sizable element, unfortunately still with us, who still think that nothing wrong happened that day.

We have to get a more dependable keeper as his handling of the ball is a absolute major concern.
