SCIENTISTS from Edinburgh University have made a significant breakthrough in cancer research in relation to ethnicity.
It has been found that people with the same cancer susceptibility genes respond differently depending on their race.

The researchers have shown that a genetic marker is associated with an increased the risk of colon cancer in Europeans, but not in the Japanese population. This genetic variant was associated with a similar risk of rectal cancer in both populations.

While dietary differences are already known to be important, the find shows for the first time that genetic factors might explain some of the differences in bowel cancer risk between populations.

This is one in a series of Cancer Research UK funded studies searching for bowel cancer susceptibility genes.

Lead author, Cancer Research UK's Professor Malcolm Dunlop of the University of Edinburgh's Institute of Genetics and Molecular Medicine, said: "This is the first time a race-specific effect has been found for a genetic marker.

"It's an important step forward in our knowledge of the causes of bowel cancer, bringing us closer to a genetic test for those at high risk of the disease."

It is sheer racism to say that people are different on the inside just because they have a different colour on the outside. Next so-called "Scientists" will be crawling from under rocks agreeing with Dr Watson of DNA discovery fame that different races have different intelligences and that women from each race are less intelligent by 5 percentage points on average from men in those same races errr just because every study ever carried out has shown this to be the case. Not only is such research the thin edge of the racist wedge it is the thin end of the mysoginist wedge, ........ or maybe it is just a fact of life and everyone should learn to live with it. Diversity I think we call it, we are supposed to celebrate it not pretend it doesn't exist. I hear some "Scientist" has just discovered that men and women look different under their clothes. What sort of rabid mysoginist sexism is this? Are taxpayers funds being used to perpetrate such lies? I hope not. Whatever next? They'll be saying the vast majority of women are happier being controlled and staying at home with the kids next. Long live non-diversity where we celebrate all being exactly the same except when it comes to getting ahead of the queue because you are from an ethnic minority or a woman. Seriously though how can we ignore Scientific studies that say we are different because the PC brigade demand it yet embrace these differences in the aid of cancer cures because the PC brigade can't find a convenient label to denegrate the basis of them? How will we ever find the route cause of intelligence if we are all the same? Only the differences will allow us to find out who we each are and where we each fit in. I want to be part of a diverse culture and diversity can consist of most mothers staying at home with young kids because the children, the fathers and the mothers think it is a damn good idea. Maybe such incontrovertable studies will rid us of "HArman Sexist Politics" (HASP) where reality is ignored to th

What is the point of having a comment section that cuts the last few words off? The end should have said.

mothers think it is a damn good idea. Maybe such incontrovertable studies will rid us or "Harman sexist Politics" where reality is ignored to the detrement of everyone of every gender and every age just to create a convenient soundbite for the thicker parts of our society that Harman panders to at society's peril. Do we really want her HASP on all our straitjackets or do we truly want to celebrate diversity and no buts?

I feel compelled to highlight the scary but all too common misunderstanding explored by "proximaking". The difference in the genes of an individual is very much a case of inhertitance, in other words the mix of genes inhertited from our parents. This means the ethnic background of an individual is a mix of the racial background of their parents (and their parents etc) and SO IS THEIR GENETIC MAKEUP. This discovery is not a case of identifying a somewhow inferior aspect to a specific "race" but a important scientific leap in potentially helping those people who are susecptible to certain medical conditions.
The comparison between this work and the comments of Dr Watson is a ridiculous alarmist rant with no logic or reason attributed to it. I feel it is reactions like this, that are based in no real knowledge of a subject, that are directly harmful to the development of medical advances and the reactions of the public to such endevours.
I hope that the above article will have prompted Proximarking and others to read further into this subject after eliciting such a strong reaction.

I always knew that people from Dundee were different.
